The Walt Disney Company Donates $1M to American Red Cross
As part of National Preparedness Month this September, the American Red Cross today announced a $1 million grant from Disney (DIS:NYSE) to help kids and families prepare for disasters and other emergencies. Disney’s investment will support the Red Cross Pillowcase Preparedness Program as well as other youth services. Disney also developed an interstitial that will air throughout the month of September on Disney Channel, which highlights simple actions kids can take to prepare for emergencies.
“We are so thankful to Disney for their support of the American Red Cross,” said Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the Red Cross. “Their generosity and collaboration is showing the public, especially our youth, how easy it is to prepare for the unexpected. Disney is helping us to prepare communities across the U.S., and they’re by our side as we respond to disasters.”
Earlier this year, Disney donated more than 100,000 Mickey Mouse plush to the Red Cross to give to children affected by disaster, who have lost everything. “The Mickey Mouse plush bring comfort to those impacted by disaster, which brings a sense of normalcy back into children’s lives,” said McGovern.
The Red Cross Pillowcase Preparedness Program — an initiative that eases children’s fears about disasters, emergencies and evacuations — will first pilot in New Orleans and Los Angeles. Children learn to pack their favorite items from home into a pillow case for easy transport, and parents learn ways to dispel their children’s concerns about evacuations.
“It’s essential for families to be prepared so kids feel safe in an unpredictable situation,” said Jay Rasulo, senior executive vice president and chief financial officer or The Walt Disney Company. “With the compassion and expertise of the Red Cross, along with Disney’s unique position to reach millions of households, together we hope to educate and empower families across the country with the tools and resources they need to feel secure in any environment.”
In addition to the grant, Disney’s Friends for Change – a global initiative that inspires kids and families to take action and make a difference in their communities – developed an interstitial that will air on Disney Channel and the Friends for Change website (Disney.com/Friends) throughout September. The spot, which features Disney Channel star and Friends for Change Ambassador Debby Ryan (“Jessie”), shows kids three easy steps to prepare for the unexpected: Get a kit, make a plan, and be informed. The spot also encourages kids to involve their community and friends in the process.
Disney is also providing support to Red Cross youth services, including youth volunteer engagement programs, and disaster services in Los Angeles; New York City; Bristol, CT; New Orleans; Orlando; and Orange County, CA.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “The bond our viewers have with our talent is deep and powerful. As ambassadors of Friends for Change, our talent can serve as a megaphone for the importance of pro-active community involvement, motivating kids and their families to discover the many rewarding ways we can all make our world a better place to live.” He continued, “I often talk to my team about extending our value as a company beyond the TV screen, and this initiative does an exemplary job of that – and for this, I could not be prouder.”
As part of the program, Disney Channel will debut a series of interstitial messages, featuring the Disney Friends for Change Ambassadors beginning MONDAY, JUNE 18. Disney Channel, Radio Disney, and Disney.com will chronicle the Ambassadors throughout the summer as they volunteer and inspire kids of all ages to lead. Also part of the interstitial series and debuting FRIDAY, JUNE 29, Debby Ryan will share her personal experience volunteering in India through Disney Friends for Change with Free The Children, where she helped build a new school for a local village. Inspired by the stories and efforts of Disney Friends for Change kids, Debby helped to start the Ambassadors program.
To coincide with the on-air interstitials, Friends for Change will offer tools and resources at www.disney.com/friends where kids and families can discover additional ideas on how to make a difference. Site visitors are able to download action kits, learn more about the Ambassadors’ campaigns, and participate in the new Shout Out Module, an online forum that allows kids and families to motivate each other and exchange tips on actions to help their schools and neighborhoods. Families can also vote online to further support each Ambassador’s campaign and help thousands of more kids as a result.

Production Starts on ‘Jessie’ for Disney Channel, Starring Debby Ryan
Production has begun in Hollywood on “Jessie,” a new comedy series starring 18-year-old Debby Ryan (“The Suite Life on Deck,” “16 Wishes”) as an idealistic teen from rural Texas who moves to New York City and becomes a nanny for a high-profile couple with four kids. The series is scheduled to premiere in fall 2011 on Disney Channel.
Jessie is a small town girl with big dreams who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime when she decides to leave behind starry nights for big city lights. Thrilled to be on her own and determined not to be intimidated by New York City, she accepts a job as nanny and moves in with highflying couple Morgan and Pandora and their four children, Emma, Ravi, Luke and Zuri. With a whole new world of opportunities within her reach, Jessie begins to navigate young adulthood and life in the big city. She surprises herself with how much she comes to rely on the support and advice of the kids in her care. Also helping to keep her moral compass in check are Bertram, the family’s butler, and Tony, the building’s 20-year-old doorman.
Starring alongside Ryan are Tony Award-nominated Kevin Chamberlin (Broadway’s “The Addams Family”) as Bertram, the frosty butler; Peyton List (“27 Dresses,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules”) as Emma, a brilliant but cynical 13-year-old and the only biological child in the bunch; Karan Brar (“Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules”) as Ravi, a 10-year-old adoptee imbued with his Eastern culture, but thrilled with his new life in America; Cameron Boyce (“Grown Ups”) as Luke, a 12-year-old adopted son who is exploding with mischief and is a videogame addict; and Skai Jackson (“Royal Pains”) as Zuri, an adorable 7-year-old girl adopted from Africa who is highly imaginative and fanciful.
“Jessie” was created by Pamela Eells O’Connell (“Family Matters,” “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” “The Suite Life on Deck”), who serves as executive producer. The series is from It’s a Laugh Productions, Inc.

Disney Starlet Debby Ryan Confirmed as Christmas Parade Performer as First Speculated by Stitch Kingdom
Admittedly it was a very targeted shot in the dark, but the Orlando Sentinel now provides official confirmation from the Walt Disney World Resort that ‘Suite Life On Deck’ co-star Debby Ryan will be performing in the Magic Kingdom portion of the 2010 Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade as we first speculated late last month. Ryan was an easy pick for us as she performs in a music video for ‘Deck the Halls’ on the The Search For Santa Paws direct-to-video movie, following in the footsteps of Steve Rushton who had the same honor (give or take) last year.
In addition to Debby Ryan, also scheduled to perform today is Glee starlet Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones) as reported by area resident Banks Lee who has checked in from the taping.
The Walt Disney World Resort also confirms the scheduled appearance of Mariah Carey as we first reported in early November as well as the replacement of hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa by Ryan Seacrest. We also recently reported that ‘American Idol’ winner Lee DeWyze and ‘America’s Got Talent’ runner-up Jackie Devancho are also expected to perform.
The staged performances of the Magic Kingdom portion of the 2010 Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade begin taping today with additional performances tomorrow with the actual parade portion taped on Saturday. The Disneyland portion of the parade featuring performances by Selena Gomez, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and ‘Dancing With The Stars’ pros Tony Dovolani, Chelsie Hightower, Kym Johnson and Louis Van Amstel with host Nick Cannon was taped last month.
