Disney and ESPN Media Networks and Sony Network Entertainment International LLC (SNEI) today announced an agreement to bring the company’s media networks to PlayStation™Vue, the pioneering cloud-based live TV service. Disney will offer ESPN, ABC-owned local stations, Disney Channel, ABC Family, and more networks on PlayStation Vue with the service’s unique features, including the ability to play multiple streams from one account and a powerful, intuitive user interface. In addition, local ABC affiliate stations will also have the opportunity to opt-in to the PlayStation Vue service with their live linear programming.
The epic storytelling of Disney’s The Lion King continues with The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar, a primetime television movie event premiering on November 22 at 7 pm ET/PT on Disney Channel. The movie follows Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, as he assumes the role of leader of the Lion Guard, a team of animals tasked with preserving the Pride Lands. The movie is a precursor to ‘The Lion Guard’ television series, premiering in early 2016 on Disney Channels and Disney Junior channels around the globe.
A sequel script to Disney’s Descendants (working title: Descendants 2) has been commissioned from the first movie’s screenwriters, Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon, who will also serve as executive producers on the project. The announcement was made today by Gary Marsh, President and Chief Creative Officer, Disney Channels Worldwide. Descendants is cable television’s fifth highest-rated movie of all-time.
On Saturday, October 17, the stars of Disney’s Descendants, including Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart and Sofia Carson, and Kenny Ortega will celebrate with fans during an on-stage, music and dance-filled event at Downtown Disney District, Disneyland Resort, in Anaheim, California.
In the upcoming ‘Doc McStuffins’ episoded titled ‘Doc McStuffins Goes to Washington,’ Doc and the toys travel to Washington D.C. to meet the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. Airing on Disney Channel on Child Health Day (Monday, October 5, 2015) at 9:00 am, the First Lady invites Doc and other kids who are making a difference in their community to the White House to be honored in a special ceremony. While there, the First Lady appoints Doc the official ‘toy doctor’ for the White House.
Disney Channel has announced that it has optioned Upside-Down Magic, a new book series from Scholastic, for development of an original TV show. The first book of the series, by bestselling authors Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle and Emily Jenkins, will be released on September 29, 2015.
Upside-Down Magic follows the misadventures of Nory, the youngest in a family of elite magicians, who finds herself relegated to a class for misfits after one magical mishap too many. There Nory meets a group of kids with equally wonky powers. Surrounded by people who believe in her, she starts to question if her so-called ‘upside-down magic’ might actually be right side up after all.
Sofia’s Aunt Tilly returns to give her a gift that will unlock a secret world and appoint Sofia storykeeper of magical books in ‘Sofia the First: The Secret Library,’ the first episode of a four-part story arc, debuting Monday, October 12 on Disney Channel at 9:00 am ET/PT and Disney Junior at 7:00 pm ET/PT. The first episode features a special appearance by Merida from Disney/Pixar’s Brave.
Bonnie Hunt and Eric Stonestreet reprise their roles as Aunt Tilly and Sofia’s flying horse, Minimus, respectively. Hugh Bonneville lends his voice as the Narrator throughout the four-part Secret Library storyline. Additional guest stars include Cary Elwes as nefarious Prince Roderick, Ruth Connell as Merida and Dean Norris as Minimus’ brother, Mazzimo.
‘PJ Masks’ is produced by eOne and Frog Box, in collaboration with the award-winning French animation studio TeamTO, and with Disney Junior and France 5. The series is based on French author Romuald Racioppo’s imaginative and striking picture book series Les Pyjamasques. A much loved publishing property in its native France, where books debuted in 2008, 15 titles have been published in the country to date with plans to release two new titles every year.
Earlier today, The Animation Guild Blog, representing the Local 839 IATSE union, provided a list of projects currently in the works at various studios in the Southern California area. Among the list are a few of interest when it comes to Disney television and feature animation.
Among the several already-known projects for Disney Television are two new entries: ‘Unannounced fairy tale’ and ‘Puppy Papers.’ An extensive Google search for the latter provided very little information on the new series, other than it’s being developed by Rough Draft Studios for Disney. All we could find were professional references for storyboard artist Aimee Major Steinberger and animation sheet timer David Lyman.
The upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie Invisible Sister, starring Rowan Blanchard (‘Girl Meets World’) and Paris Berelc (‘Mighty Med’), is set to premiere Friday, October 9 at 8:00 pm ET/PT on Disney Channel as part of ‘Monstober,’ Disney Channel’s month-long Halloween-themed programming event.
Disney Junior will debut the first six episodes of fairytale-inspired ‘Goldie & Bear’ on the popular WATCH Disney Junior platforms, beginning Saturday, September 12,with one new episode premiering on the WATCH Disney Junior app and WATCH Disney Junior.com each Monday from September 21 through October 12. Set in the magical world of Fairy Tale Forest, the animated series for kids age 2-7 reunites Goldie and Bear, after the renowned porridge incident featured in “Goldilocks and The Three Bears.” The series premieres in November on Disney Channel and Disney Junior.
