REPORT: Tinker Bell and Periwinkle Open Ice Skating Rink at Disneyland Resort (Video/Photos)
In honor of the Disney 3D Blu-ray release of Secret of the Wings starring Tinker Bell and the rest of her Pixie Hollow friends, the Disneyland Resort has decided to bring some winter magic of its own to Southern California and open a temporary outdoor skating rink in the heart of its Downtown Disney District.
Last night, a grand opening ceremony was held in which Disneyland Ambassador Rene Toricco played emcee and welcomed everyone to the event. Also speaking at the event were Vice President of Resorts and Downtown Disney Daniel Delcourt and Downtown Disney’s General Manager Janet Knox and filmmakers Peggy Holmes and Michael Wigert — along with a special appearance by Tinker Bell and newly reunited twin Periwinkle, of course.
The Secret of the Wings skating rink is located between the ESPN Zone and AMC 12 movie theater in Anaheim’s Downtown Disney District and will be open every day through January 12, 2013 from 11 am to 11 pm on Friday and Saturday and 10 pm all other days. Plus every half hour, a magical moment happens and guests will hear the film’s anthem, ‘The Great Divide’ as performed by Hollywood Records recording artists The McClain Sisters set to a synchronized light show.
Ice skating sessions are $15 per hour per person with skate rentals (double-blade also available in children’s sizes) available for an additional $3 while toddlers are $12 per hour including rentals. Mandatory helmets and pads are provided at no additional charge.
And there’s more seasonal magic to come. Beginning November 12, a unique holiday village consisting of four chalets will sprout up around the rink featuring seasonal eats and treats. A forest of ‘snow’-covered pine trees, twinkling holiday lights and cheerful garlands will create an enchanting holiday atmosphere where guests can shop, ‘chill out’ and enjoy activities for the whole family, including ‘Santimals’ (an interactive children’s art experience) and fun winter-themed photos.
Below are some additional photos of the Secret of the Wings skating rink.

Review: ‘Disney Pix’ for iPad Provides Hours of Creative Play for Free
Disney recently released ‘Disney Pix,’ its free software for its new AppClix iPad ‘appcessory.’ Manufactured by Vivitar, the AppClix effectively replaces Disney’s previous lines of licensed PIX digital cameras. In addition to being able to plug directly into the iPad to download and share photos, the AppClix boasts a 7MP camera, which is an impressive milestone for what is basically being marketed as a toy.
But this is not about the AppClix camera, it’s about the ‘Disney Pix’ app released to support it. While the Disney PIX cameras were not well received by consumers, the photo-enhancing software that came packaged with it had been uniformly praised. While I must confess I have never seen the PIX software in action, I have no qualms with blindly stating that what ‘Disney Pix’ offers has to match — and more than likely, exceeds — what the previous software offered.
The first thing to know is that like the free Cars AppMATes app, you do not need to own the AppClix to download and use ‘Disney Pix’ as you can not only reference photos from your camera roll, but there are opportunities to create full images from scratch using a combination of theme backgrounds, stickers and frames. For example, here I took a theme from the Disney Fairies section and added stickers from Disney Fairies, Mickey & Friends, Muppets and Phineas and Ferb. There’s also a section for Disney Princess and a More.. option which offers more generic stickers and frames (Pixar and Marvel are noticeably absent). Stickers aren’t just as straight forward as the ones seen here either. There are fun elements such as face and hair pieces so you can decorate a friend’s photo, props from the respective franchise, etc. Mickey & Friends even features the Fab Five in different art styles, including the popular Cuties line.
Stickers and photos can intuitively be resized and rotated by using two fingers and the appropriate gestures while photos can also be cropped and flipped with a basic editing option. The app even understands layers so you can place objects on top of each other as you wish. Other tools include a text tool which allows you to add text to your scrapbook creation with the color and typeface of your choice and an airbrush tool which will allow you to draw anything you like freehand with a range of colors and sizes. The app also handles switching between portrait and landscape modes exceptionally well.
Once your work of art is complete, you can save your project permanently and/or email it to someone. Save projects can be viewed and retrieved through the main menu which allows you to sort your projects by date created or alphabetically, although I could not see a way to actually name the project, so the option appears moot.
There are a few problems with the app which tend to be more of a tradeoff considering what the app offers. The first thing you’re likely to notice is that it appears to be very memory intensive and you’ll soon see warnings telling you to delete objects before adding them or the app may take that liberty itself (it tells you it removed objects when it does so). The iPad I tested the app on is a 16GB device so larger devices may perform better in that respect. While the text tool allows you to choose your color from a full color palette, there’s no preview option when selecting and the tool doesn’t show you the color chosen until you type (or you can type first and change font/color after), which is a minor annoyance. Lastly, the app may favor smaller fingers because there are so many options when it comes to stickers and frames, that it’s easy to pick the wrong one, although it’s very simple to remove undesired objects.
How the Disney AppClix performs has yet to be seen, but if you own an iPad and are a fan of Disney and its franchises, this app is a zero brainer. You can download it straight from the App Store for free today.

New Clips from ‘Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue’ Plus Sneak Peeks at Bonus Features
We have a couple of new clips from Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue to share with you, Pixie Hollow fans. In this first clip, provided to us by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, Disney Channel star Bridgit Mendler introduces the clip to us from the set of her new music video from the film, How to Believe.
In the clip, the Fairies are over on the Mainland changing the season when Tinker Bell and Vidia come across what looks to be the house of Tinker Bell’s dreams. Until, that is, it turns into a nightmare as Tink is trapped by a clumsy human.
In this next clip, from Walt Disney Studios New Zealand, Vidia rushes back to Pixie Hollow to alert Tink’s friends about the capture. Unfortunately for the fairies of Pixie Hollow, it’s raining and fairies can’t fly in the rain (which probably doesn’t make Silvermist feel too great about herself). But with a little help from Bobble and Clank along with some faith, trust and pixie dust, the girls are soon on their way to help their friend in need. Hopefully by the time the clip is done, Bridgit will be finished recording her music video.
And — as if by magic — here’s a clip from Bridgit Mendler’s How to Believe music video from Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue. What are the odds?
Finally, in this extended webisode of Leo Little’s Big Show, we are treated to a sneak peek at some of the other bonus material that can be found on the Disney Blu-ray/DVD of Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue.
Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue will be available to own on Disney Blu-ray/DVD on September 21 and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com

First Look: ‘Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue’ Toy Collection from JAKKS Pacific
As part of last week’s Disney Consumer Products holiday tour, we also got a first look at several toys from JAKKS Pacific in honor of the upcoming direct-to-video Disney Fairies movie Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue.
Standouts from the collection include a soft-bodied doll version of Lizzie, the human child in the film who encounters Tinker Bell and develops a relationship with her. Lizzie comes complete with a small plastic figure of Tink that fits in Lizzie’s pocket. Additionally, there will be a separate fairy house playset available which pays respects to the fairy house constructed by Lizzie from household products which initially draws Tinker Bell in.
The Pixie Power Playset offers a Pixie Hollow playset that lights up and moves as the included 4.5″ Disney fairies pass by the various interactive components. The box’s ‘try me’ mode, for example, demonstrates the rainbow lighting up as Tink flies past it. Fairies can create additional actions such as making flowers blossom, a butterfly flap her wings and more.
Lastly, the Tinker Bell doll from Mattel features a magnetic wand that — when waved over Tink’s body — causes Tink’s wings to light up with color-changing LEDs and play fairy sounds.
