Confirming a report by Stitch Kingdom made in February, Disney Cruise Line today confirmed that it will be replacing ‘Toy Story’ with a Frozen themed production titled ‘Frozen, A Musical Spectacular’ which will debut on the Disney Wonder beginning November 10, 2016, along with additional enhancements to the ship.
The story will be presented like never before, with an innovative combination of traditional theatrical techniques, modern technology and classic Disney whimsy, completely unique to the Disney Wonder production.
Disney and magic are virtually synonymous. Not only in the ethereal sense, but also when it comes to the art of illusion as performed by stage magicians for centuries. Practical illusions have found their way into countless films, television programs, theme park attractions and — especially — theatrical stage productions. The very same illusion that leaves millions of annual visitors to the Haunted Mansion mystified is actually a centuries-old theatrical effect known as Pepper’s ghost. And while it’s easy enough to produce illusions in films and television outside the reaches of the camera frame, it takes a little bit more ingenuity to have Mary Poppins pull one impossibly large object after another from a small carpet bag on stage in front of a live audience.
As first reported by Stitch Kingdom back in March, Disney today confirmed a series of new shorts based on a new franchise titled Frozen Northern Lights. As also reported by Stitch Kingdom, the franchise will kick off this summer with a book release from Random House titled Frozen Northern Lights: Journey to the Lights. The 224 page book positions itself as an adaptation of the new franchise’s storyline, with the publisher’s descriptions as follows:
Exciting new entertainment and experiences are in store for Disney Wonder guests after the Disney Cruise Line vessel is transformed this fall. Headlining the enhancements are imaginative spaces for children, a jazzy restaurant and an English pub.
Marvel Super Hero Academy
The Marvel universe comes to life in Marvel Super Hero Academy. Here, young guests can train to develop the brave and adventurous heroes inside themselves. It’s an exciting addition to Disney’s Oceaneer Club, the engaging and interactive space just for children.
The Disneyland Resort has released several sneak peek photos from the premiere performance of ‘Frozen – Live at the Hyperion’ which officially debuts tomorrow, May 27, 2016, at the Hyperion Theatre located in the Disney California Adventure. You can find the images in our gallery embedded below.
This new theatrical interpretation for the stage immerses audiences in the beloved world of Frozen and takes audiences on the heartwarming journey of Anna and Elsa, with all of the excitement of live theater. Under the direction of Tony Award® nominated Director Liesl Tommy, the show features elaborate costumes and sets, stunning special effects, and show-stopping production numbers. An exceptionally large production, the show features an opening cast and crew of more than 200, six full musical numbers and a 2,200 square foot video wall which combine for an unforgettable theatrical experience.
As the old saying goes, sometimes a carrot nose is just a carrot nose. While the likelihood that there is a new Frozen short on the horizon, Random House has announced additional information regarding the hush-hush Frozen: Northern Lights, which now appears to be more of a franchise. About a month ago, we reported that a synopsis for the upcoming 224-page ‘adaptation’ had been released. At that time, the title had been changed to a TBA, but now we not only have a title, but an actual cover and author’s name as well. The new book will be titled Frozen Northern Lights: Journey to the Lights and it was written by Suzanne Francis. Francis has written several Disney titles for Random House, including novelizations of Pixar’s Inside Out and Disney’s Zootopia and some ancillary titles to boot. The book is slated for release on July 5, 2016 and is available for pre-order. The official publisher’s description is as follows:
Walt Disney World has released some new details regarding the ‘Frozen Ever After’ attraction and permanent meet and greet location for Anna and Elsa as well as some additional information from the film’s songwriters, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The Lopezes speak about the attraction in the video embedded below which also includes appearances by their daughters, Annie and Katie (both of whom had parts in the original film).
Breaking its complete silence on the Frozen Northern Lights subject, Random House has officially released a synopsis for its upcoming Frozen Northern Lights: The Deluxe Novelization (ISBN: 0736436596, 978-0736436595) with just four months to go to its release. As previously reported, after news of the title began to gain awareness, Random House changed the title simply to ‘to be announced’ (TBA), a title it still currently retains. That said, we do now know the following:
