Just ahead of E3, we have received confirmation of something we have been reporting for quite some time: a previously as-of-yet unannounced playset for ‘Disney Infinity,’ The Lone Ranger. Although we have been talking about the playset since before the original announcement, we last visited the possibility back in March, when the launch had been delayed until August. While most outlets focused on that its launch no longer coincided with the theatrical release of Monsters University, we also pointed out that it now releases after the theatrical debut of The Lone Ranger, which will now mean Disney Infinity will be relying on the success of the film rather than being a marketing tool for it.
Now with E3 just a couple of weeks away, etailers such as Amazon.com have begun listing the playset for pre-order. One gung ho retailer in particular, Entertainment Earth, even went as far as providing an image of the packaging for the playset which features the Tonto and Lone Ranger figures, along with the playset token, a variant on the skull and crossbones composed of a Texas Ranger badge, a pistol and a tomahawk.
The page has since been removed, but the images themselves were left in-tact (both the thumbnail and actual size). Additionally we were able to find the page in tact through the internet archive wayback machine. The product description reads as follows:
Disney Infinity The Lone Ranger Play Set Pack
- Expand on your Disney Infinity figure collection!
- Disney Infinity Play Set Pack for Disney’s The Lone Ranger.
- Comes with The Lone Ranger and Tonto video game mini-figures along with The Lone Ranger world!
Continue building and strongly expanding your arsenal of Disney Infinity characters! This Disney Infinity The Lone Ranger Play Set Pack lets you greatly expand your strength in the Disney Infinity video game. Featuring video game mini-figures of The Lone Ranger’s Tonto and The Lone Ranger along with The Lone Ranger world expansion ability, this Play Set Pack allows you to continue playing and experiencing the amazing world of Disney Infinity with Disney’s The Lone Ranger!
It should be noted that the anticipated September 2013 release date is the same date Entertainment Earth has posted for all ‘Disney Infinity’ products so we still anticipate The Lone Ranger playset’s release at launch. The prices are also higher than you can expect from other etailers. We asked Entertainment Earth about their prices and this was a response from a representative:
‘The pricing we have posted on our site is the pricing that has been recommended as the correct retail price for the item. Since Disney is the license holder, they can sell the item for a lower price than any other retail outlet. We do offer a Low Price Guarantee program, … you can forward that website URL to us and we will try to match it.’
This just leaves the Toy Story Space playset we have been anticipating.
While we expect to see and hear a lot more as E3 rolls around next month, Amazon.com and other etailers have begun listing some of the accessories by PDP that will be available for Disney Infinity at launch on August 18, 2013.
The big ticket item appears to be the Disney Infinity Play Zone (seen here), which according to etailers will be able to store up to 17 character figures and 3 playset tokens along with 20 power discs and the Disney Infinity base and software disc. Amazon is also listing a Disney Infinity Play ‘N Store which is currently lacking a product image, but it appears to be a more convenient form of the Play Zone, allowing easy storage to play conversion, featuring stackable capability for multiple Play ‘N Stores and the ability to easily slide in the Disney Infinity base for game play.
For the figures themselves — and hopefully an indication that we may see variants and/or exclusives on the Disney Infinity figures — PDP will offer a 3-pack of Disney Infinity Figure Display Cases which are also stackable. The cases also include clips for web codes.
Power discs, of which we expect multiple waves of twenty discs each, have their own storage options courtesy of PDP. The Disney Infinity Power Disc Capsule features a slide-out tray that provides easy access to your favorite power discs and even comes complete with a set of dual power disc bands (one round, one hexagon) that allows you to keep your favorite combination of power discs at the ready for gameplay. To aid you in collecting the complete set of power discs, a special wave one edition of the Disney Infinity Power Disc Album will house all 20 (though Amazon currently incorrectly lists it at 30) of the first wave, each disc in their own specially marked slot.
Also listed is a 6-Feet Extension Cable which will presumably allow the Disney Infinity base to be used further away from the console if needed.
Walmart also lists a Disney Infinity Base Protector which encases the Disney Infinity base in clear plastic which still allows play-through as well as the ability to insert art cards, offering an element of customization. The manufacturer is not listed for this item.

With the August 18, 2013 release date for Disney Infinity looming, retailers are beginning to step up their offers to entice consumers to choose them as the shop of choice when it comes to the starter pack, expansion packs, additional figures and accessories from PDP to show off and tote collections.
Tied for the leaders in the fairly tight race currently appears to be Amazon.com and GameStop.com who are bundling the starter sets with a figure of choice plus a blind pack of Disney Infinity power discs at the retail list of $74.95. For details and options, visit Amazon.com or GameStop.com.
In second position is DisneyStore.com which is offering a $15 store credit, technically more than the price of a Disney Infinity figure, along with free shipping. The only downside is that the credit must be redeemed by September 2, 2013. For more details, visit DisneyStore.com.
Right behind them is Best Buy who at this time is offering just an additional figure (no Power Disc pack).
Walmart is offering $4.99 in VUDU credit for customers who purchase the starter pack from them. They are also offering 10 free movies for those who sign up for the service for a limited time.
No known offers exist for Toys R Us, Target and other major retailers who are currently taking pre-orders for Disney Infinity, but it’s important to note that retailers are adjusting these offers all the time to stay competitive, so they should be checked on periodically to ensure you’re getting the best deal. Also more figures are expected to be revealed as we build up to the game’s final release so unless you’re planning to collect them all, that’s something else to watch out for.
As a reminder, you will need a starter pack for each platform/console you wish to play the game for software reasons — figures themselves are platform independent and store individual memory on the figures themselves.

Earlier this evening, the New York Times broke the news that Disney Infinity will no longer be released in June as previously announced, but has been pushed back to August 18 domestically, with a European release a couple of days later.
The move, according to the article, was one based on market and positioning, suggesting retailers were receptive to the product and offering valuable shelf space for it but wanted it closer to the holiday season.
While the article gives the impression that Disney Interactive feels the move will be better overall for its bottom line (at least come 2014), it also introduces some doubts as well.
For starters, the article focuses on how far Disney Infinity will trail Pixar’s Monsters University, which it was originally going to be released with in tandem. However, there is another title Disney Infinity was set to promote at launch, that being Jerry Bruckheimer’s The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. Although not yet officially announced by Disney Interactive, the Lone Ranger is believed to be the promised mysterious second playset available at launch. An image of the first wave of the Disney Infinity power disc package supports that theory, with images of Tonto and the Lone Ranger prominently featured along with the (mostly) known remaining figures at launch.
In short, whereas players would have been introduced to the world of The Lone Ranger a few weeks prior to its theatrical release date of July 3, now Disney Interactive will have to hope that the movie is entertaining enough to its audience that they’ll want to purchase the play set at an additional cost several weeks later.
The shelf date also brings Disney Infinity closer to the launch date of PlayStation 4, which is not known to support the Disney Infinity platform as of yet (more surprise announcements, anyone?) as Sony has already acknowledged that the PS4 won’t be backwards compatible with PS3 titles.
If in fact the push is at the behest of retailers, one thing is clear: Disney is ready to play ball. Although it’s not a traditional outlet for video games for obvious reasons, we are told Disney Store will be carrying Disney Infinity both online and in-store and Disney clearly could’ve easily had the upper hand in the retail battle by simply making it a Disney Store exclusive until the big boys decide to jump in.
Although it had already been announced (and confirmed our initial reports), Disney Interactive today noted that at launch, ‘Disney Infinity’ will have a Cars play set available to purchase. This makes Cars the fourth officially announced play set (along with Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles) and the first add-on pack.
As we reported (and confirmed) yesterday, the Cars play set allows gamers to take on the role of Lightning McQueen, Mater, Holley Shiftwell and Francesco Bernoulli and enter the virtual world of Radiator Springs, where they will prepare the town for a big international racing event.
Key highlights of the play set add-on include:
- Racing and Customization: players will be able to race through town on full sized tracks and pull off amazing, gravity defying feats in a no-holds-barred stunt park. Additionally, players can customize the town, exploring the outskirts of the city and towing all types of vehicles to make way for tourists.
- Play Set: The Cars play set adds driving/racing play mechanics and track pieces to the Toy Box allowing players to create all-new racing challenges, build and customize tracks and much more.
- Toy Box mode: Lightning, Mater, Holley and Francesco are able to interact with all of the previously revealed characters from The Incredibles, Monsters University and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Courtesy of Disney Interactive, we have added the new assets for ‘Disney Infinity’ Cars including character art, figures and screenshots to our galleries below (we will begin backfilling the galleries shortly).
With just a few months to go until ‘Disney Infinity’ hits the shelves, etailers around the world have begun listing the game and its various components and accessories, offering us a glimpse of what we can expect on its launch date in June.
Amazon.com as well as several others have already begun listing the starter pack for consoles which includes Nintendo Wii and Wii U, Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. Curiously enough, they (and several other etailers) also list the same starter pack for the same price for the Nintendo 3DS. This is somewhat telling since the 3DS version is expected to be essentially a completely scaled down experience due to hardware constraints, so selling an entire starter pack for it at full retail seems a bit ambitious to say the least. Just to expand on that, we have been told by Disney Interactive that there will not be any software-only version of the product, so if you wish to play it on both your Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii (or any other console), you will be required to purchase the full starter pack for each, despite the fact that the hardware is fairly independent of the software.
Also listed for pre-order are some of the 17 or so additional figures that will be available at launch including Mike Wazowski, Davy Jones, Syndrome, Violet, Captain Barbossa, Dash and Mrs. Incredible.
Our report that a Cars play set would be available at launch was also confirmed, but it appears the only etailer currently listing it that we could find is Entertainment Earth (we presume the price is incorrectly posted and have notified them as such). Their description goes on to confirm our original reports that the play set will include Lightning McQueen and Holly Shiftwell while Tow Mater and Franceso Bernoulli figures will be available separately. Interestingly enough, Entertainment Earth’s description also confirms our report of The Lone Ranger being supported in the future.
Lastly, while we anticipate more characters being announced for launch as well as a full line of accessories for display and power disc keeping, one other item of note we found was a book titled Disney Infinity: Infinite Possibilities. According to the description, this 80-page companion book to the highly anticipated Disney Infinity video game will introduce players to the beloved Disney and Pixar characters and worlds featured in the game. Players will learn all about their favorite characters, including Captain Jack Sparrow, Sulley, Lightning McQueen and The Incredibles. In addition, this first companion book will explore all six initial Play Sets, such as the worlds of Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Cars as well as provide tips on building entire worlds in the Toy Box mode straight from the game’s creators.
The book is the only item we found domestically with a specific release date of June 18, which coincidentally when we have been reporting ‘Disney Infinity’ to be released. In the UK, June 28 is being listed as the release date for ‘Disney Infinity’ while in France, it appears to be July 15.
Recently we attended the launch announcement of ‘Disney Infinity’ from Disney Interactive and Avalanche Software, where we also got some hands-on experience and demo’d the game. While we have been at the forefront of releasing news on this hotly anticipated project, even we were taken aback at the scope and magnitude of the game and the worlds it allows you to experience through both its adventure mode and the toy box mode.
Needless to say, to even attempt a proper rundown of everything the game has to offer in just one article would be futile at its best, so rather than even try, we will begun focusing on various aspects of the title and share what we know, going far beyond the information that has already been presented to the public. We’ve chosen to start with what is perhaps the most confusing element of the game and one we have already fielded many questions on: the power discs.
So just what are those power discs exactly? In short, they allow you an element of customization above and beyond what the game itself offers. They are add-ons, tantamount to downloadable content, only they are unlocked with a physical piece that adds them to the game when the power disc is applied and removes them when the power disc is taken away.
At the most basic level, there are two types of power discs. The round power discs enhance players’ individual abilities. This can include enhancements such the economy, so the player will earn slightly more coins when playing inside the play sets, or the ability to move faster, or have special powers. These power discs are placed upon the ‘Disney Infinity’ reader, right underneath the character they are intended to enhance.
The second, ‘hexagonal’ type provides customization to the toy box mode and is placed on the reader where the play set token would go. This, by far, is the more popular of the power discs and, as such, provide a much further range of possibilities. They are capable of either bringing in an object into the toy box temporarily (as long as the power disc is on the reader) or modifying the toy box dome (environment).
As an example for the former, gamers can introduce mounts (vehicles) to the toy box such as a Disneyland Dumbo ride vehicle, a Muppets Electric Mayhem bus,, Abu from Aladdin as an elephant, Mickey’s jalopy from ‘Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Angus from Disney/Pixar’s Brave and more. Meanwhile the latter type of disc allows gamers to customize the dome, either the landscape or the skin of the dome itself, meaning it will take two power discs to completely transform the dome into a particular theme. Films such as Wreck-It Ralph, Tangled, Alice in Wonderland, Finding Nemo, Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas and ‘TRON: Uprising,’ just to name a few. As a side bar, the various films’ themes are available as textures inside the toy box, allowing you to theme a plot of land inside the dome to’TRON: Uprising’ or ‘Sugar Rush’ from Wreck-It Ralph, but the respective power disc will be needed to make it global.
Although the demo did not appear to support it (we will have more information on this at a later date), the power discs are also intended to be stackable, allowing gamers to combine multiple enhancements to the game at one time.
Where it gets really interesting, however, is in networked, multi-player toy box mode. Here you will have up to four players who will be able to interact with each other within the same dome, so every edit one player makes to the dome will affect all other players in real-time. This includes customizations via the power discs, so if one gamer applies the Tangled sky dome power disc to the ‘Disney Infinity’ reader, it becomes the background for all of the gamers. In order to negotiate where there may be conflicts, the last player to apply the conflicting power disc will take control, so you can see where there may be some physical ‘interaction’ involved between players in addition to the in-game activity.
At launch time, there will be a first wave of 20 power discs to collect and use with additional waves to be introduced throughout 2013. In addition, a line of ‘Disney Infinity’ accessories will be available to help display and store the figurines as well as the power discs.
So how does one acquire said power discs? That’s another interesting aspect of the game. While a random power disc will come inside each starter pack, they will mostly be obtained via blind-packs of two for $4.99. In other words, you won’t know which power discs you’ve purchased until you open the pack up. This of course leads to potentially owning duplicates of certain power discs, which in turn will encourage trading and collecting amongst friends in the real world.
In addition, distribution of the power discs will be weighted, with some (such as the Abu elephant mount) being rarer than most of the others (essentially chasers). Some power discs will even have lenticular effects for their image, adding to their collectibility.
If you have any questions on ‘Disney Infinity,’ feel free to ask them in the comments below. We’ll begin to start compiling a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and will answer as earnestly as possible. We also anticipate getting more hands-on experience with ‘Disney Infinity’ in the weeks ahead.
As a reminder, you can watch the entire ‘Disney Infinity’ launch event embedded below:
DISCLAIMER: Disney Interactive Media Group provided complimentary travel and other accommodations which made this report possible. This did not influence the article in any way.
At a launch event held earlier today at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California, Disney Interactive Co-President John Pleasants was joined by John Lasseter to announce ‘Disney Infinity,’ a multi-platform experience which will certainly prove to be one of the most ambitious projects to date in the world of video games.
The announcement confirms everything we have reported previously. Using a combination of plastic figures, a ‘Disney Infinity’ reader and more, players will have the ability to allow Pixar and Disney characters to interact with each other directly in a video game, as demonstrated by the screen shot to the left which features Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 alongside Bullseye, Mr. Incredible, Mike Wazowski and Sulley.
In addition to the toy box mode, an additional plastic trophy will open up a Play Set mode in which players are free to explore individual worlds from the Disney and Pixar universes such as Monsters University campus, Radiator Springs, Phineas and Ferb, The Lone Ranger and Toy Story Space.
In addition, specialized token/coins (available in blind packs) will allow the gamer to add multiple attributes to their player as well as add additional features to the play sets, as desired.
With the product, gamers receive figures for Sulley, Captain Jack Sparrow, Mr. Incredible), a landmark token (Monsters University ) and an enhancement token/coin. Going further, expansion packs will become available with the additional play sets, figures and multiple waves of the ability coins.
Below are a couple of screen shots from the game, photos of some of the tokens and concept art of many of them. Additional characters include Mike Wazowski, Randall, Hector Barbossa, Davy Jones, Mrs. Incredible, Syndrome, Dash, Violet, Woody, Jack Skellington, Agent P, Rapunzel, Anna (Frozen), Ice Queen (Frozen), Sorcerer Mickey, Tow Mater and Francesco Bernoulli.
At launch for ‘Disney Infinity,’ a Radiator Springs playset from Disney/Pixar’s Cars will be available complete with Lightning McQueen and Holly Shiftwell. Future expansion packs will include: The Lone Ranger with the Lone Ranger and Tonto; ‘Toy Story in Space’ with Jessie and Buzz Lightyear; and ‘Phineas and Ferb’ with Phineas and Ferb.
Below is a gallery of screenshots and artwork/images for ‘Disney Infinity.’
Additional photos and videos from today’s event will be posted here as they become available.
