WDW Refurbs: Dumbo Re-Opening Delayed Until End of March (Updated)
Some unfortunate news comes way of the official Walt Disney World Resort website today as it notes that the re-opening of Dumbo has been postponed from its original re-opening date of February 18 until March 12 March 31, 2012. The news is unexpected as construction has wasted no time in dismantling the attraction from its current location behind Cinderella Castle to its new location at the Storybook Circus area of the New Fantasyland Expansion, in the area formerly occupied by Mickey’s Toontown Fair.
When the attraction re-opens, it will come face to face with a nearly identical Dumbo attraction, although the new version of Dumbo will be the first Dumbo attraction to spin in the opposite direction, creating the ‘Dueling Dumbos’ effect. That ride is already at least in the final Testing and Adjusting phase by Walt Disney Imagineering. When the area opens, Dumbo is expected to finally feature water like its foreign siblings and domestic distant cousins. The current Dumbo system was originally built for Disneyland Paris and able to include water as a feature, but the location above the Utilidors made that impossible.

First Look: New Fantasyland’s Dumbo Marks Disney Parks Milestone (Video)
It appears that Walt Disney Imagineering has begun the test and adjust phase for the brand new Dumbo attraction being installed in the Storybook Circus area of the New Fantasyland Expansion at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Photos and video captured by MouseSteps demonstrate some of the vehicles in action yesterday.
What makes this particular installation of the classic attraction is that this will be the first time in any Disney theme park that Dumbo will fly in a clockwise direction (i.e., if you were to look at the attraction from an aerial vantage point), or more simply put, Dumbo faces left. In every other installation, Dumbo flies in the opposite (counter-clockwise) direction. The attraction topper is also more ornate than previous incarnations, replacing Timothy Mouse with a bevy of storks mid-job.
The existing Dumbo attraction is expected to close on January 9 and be relocated to its new space, next to the new Dumbo attraction, offering guests a ‘Dueling Dumbo’ effect when the attraction is expected to re-open on February 18, 2012 for Presidents’ Day Weekend March 12, 2012.
Effectively doubling the theoretical hourly ride capacity (THRC), Dumbo is also expected to offer another Disney first: no traditional queue. Instead of guests lining up for what is notoriously one of the longest and slowest queues in the parks, a circus tent area will offer entertainment for guests as they wait for their respective boarding group to be announced, as was previously tested at Rock’n'Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It! Disney Theatrical Working on ‘Newsies’ for Broadway
You might want to sit down for this one. This week has been busy on the Disney domain registration front. First we brought some very widely received news about several domains registered by Walt Disney Studios for potential upcoming projects, DreamWorks titles in the works and a possible name-change for Secretariat.
Then it’s reported that Disney Theatrical is working on a staged musical production of Dumbo. Today, we catch a glimpse of another project Disney Theatrical is apparently working on: Newsies. The 1992 Christian Bale vehicle was a major flop for the Disney Studios but eventually became somewhat of a cult hit on video.
No doubt this is going to make an awful lot of folks very, very happy if Newsies does manage to finds its way to Broadway, or the musical theater anywhere and Disney Theatrical is working hard to eliminate any doubt that either new proposed show will conduct a national tour, at least through the domain registration process.
Registered yesterday, we have: NEWSIESBROADWAY.COM, NEWSIESMUSICAL.COM, NEWSIESONTOUR.COM, NEWSIESTHEMUSICAL.COM and NEWSIESTICKETS.COM. On the Dumbo front, Disney has now registered the following domain names: DUMBOMUSICAL.COM, DUMBOONTOUR.COM DUMBOTHEMUSICAL.COM and DUMBOTICKETS.COM.

NY Post: Disney Theatrical Hoping ‘Dumbo’ Will Soar on Great White Way
The New York Post reported earlier today that Disney Theatrical Productions is quietly working on a new Broadway musical based on the 1941 Disney animated classic Dumbo.
According to the article, Broadway director Stephen Daldry was approached for the project and was in talks prior to things breaking down and that the production company is continuing its search for a director to help bring Dumbo to the stage.
Initially meant to be released earlier this year on blu-ray, the home video release of Dumbo has been postponed to an unspecified date in 2011, which would not only help mark the film’s 70th anniversary, but would also provide some room in the bonus features for a teaser on the Broadway production should the project find its wings ears and take flight.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (June 11) – Disneyland Resort glows like never before this summer with the exciting, after-dark entertainment of Summer Nightastic!: a new fireworks spectacular, “Magical,” starring Dumbo the flying elephant; Tinker Bell’s “pixie magic” in “Disney’s Electrical Parade”; sensational new characters and special effects in “Fantasmic!” – and more.
“This summer is all about new surprises at nighttime,” said Ed Grier, president of Disneyland Resort. “With the sparkling Summer Nightastic! entertainment and our valuable summer offers, Disneyland Resort will be the hottest spot in Southern California this summer for kids of all ages.”
To enjoy all the fun, guests will find special ticket offers and vacation packages at Disneyland.com, including the Summer Fun Pass for residents of Southern California and Northern Baja, and a “2 Nights Free” offer at Disneyland Resort hotels and Resort Good Neighbor hotels. The special hotel deal provides guests five days and nights of Disneyland fun, for the price of three.
Nighttime entertainment, always an exciting part of summer at Disneyland Resort, appears in a whole new light – bigger, bolder and brighter – during Summer Nightastic! Dumbo makes his debut in the sky above Sleeping Beauty Castle in the “Magical” fireworks spectacular and Tinker Bell leads the way in “Disney’s Electrical Parade.” New creatures will thrill guests in this summer’s “Fantasmic!” show, rockin’ bands and DJs heat up a great new dance club in Tomorrowland and the fairies of Pixie Hollow play under the lights for the first time. Later this summer, a new, 40-foot-tall dragon will breathe fire across the Rivers of America in “Fantasmic!”
Summer Nightastic! continues nightly through Sunday, Aug. 23, at Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure parks. “Magical” fireworks continue through Labor Day weekend.
