One key difference is that this game is being promoted for multi-platform, including Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which did not have their Kinect and Move systems (respectively) available when the original Wii-exclusive title was being developed, which created quite a stir amongst the gaming community. That said, Junction Point, the developer of the original title, never ruled out bringing the game to those platforms and lead developer Warren Spector had said from the beginning that he had more material to bring to the table, hinting at, but never explicitly suggesting a sequel.

The game’s description, as provided in the online survey, is as follows:

‘Disney Epic Mickey 2 is the latest game in the critically acclaimed Disney Epic Mickey videogame series. In this all-new action-platforming game available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, Mickey embarks on an epic journey and is pulled back into a world filled with Disney’s forgotten characters. Players can choose to play single-player as Mickey or for the first time players can also choose 2-player split screen mode. In the 2 player mode one person can play as Mickey wielding magic paint and paint thinner to dynamically change the world and the second player can play as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit – Walt Disney’s first cartoon star – with the power to fly like a helicopter and use electricity to fight or friend enemies and solve challenges. Team-up and choose your path to save this forgotten world because the choices you make will alter the story and change the end of the game!’

Guests of the D23 Expo will be able to suit up, power up and team up as they enter Disney Universe, a multiplayer action-adventure video game set in a mix-up of Disney and Disney/Pixar inspired worlds that will be released this fall.

The Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension video game, inspired by the Disney Channel Original Movie, will be available for hands-on gameplay. Fans will be able to play as their favorite Phineas and Ferb characters as they journey through new dimensions to battle the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz.

Guests can also immerse themselves in the recently released and critically acclaimed Cars 2: The Video Game. Inspired by the Disney/Pixar animated film, the game allows players to dive into the Cars 2 universe alongside some of their favorite Cars personalities in exotic locations spanning the globe.

The award-winning video game Disney Epic Mickey will be featured in the DIMG pavilion and the game’s creator, legendary game designer Warren Spector, will be on hand. Mr. Spector will be making special appearances at the booth on August 19 and 20 to meet guests and sign autographs.

Online gamers can play Disney’s latest social games, including this summer’s smash hit Gardens of Time and the popular online virtual world for kids Club Penguin. Guests who want Disney games on the go, can try out the latest mobile games, such as Cars 2 and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, available for iPhone, iPad and Android.

For aspiring young Disney artists and animators, Disney.com’s Create will offer its newest collection of online creativity tools for making digital paintings, comic books, animated pets, photo mashups, music slideshows and animations. During the D23 Expo, the new Disney Epic Mickey Digital Painter will be featured in the booth and guests will be invited to participate in daily art contests judged by Warren Spector for the chance to win exclusive D23 DIMG prize packages.

UPDATE: 7/25/11 – For those who are curious, we are told that Disneyland Adventures for the Microsoft Xbox Kinect will be represented, but Microsoft has its own booth, which is why it wasn’t mentioned in the press release from Disney Interactive.

In celebration of the launch of Epic Mickey from Disney Interactive Studios and Junction Point Studios today, the newly opened Disney Store Times Square played host to an event of epic proportions. At the center of it all was gaming veteran and Junction Point creative director, visionary Warren Spector. Spector was joined by the rest of the development team as they realized the fruits of their labor for the past three years in Epic Mickey.

Also in attendance for the event were ‘Dancing With The Stars’ winner Jennifer Grey and co-star Kyle Massey who offered a meet and greet opportunity with guests who had purchased the game during the early morning event. As a bonus, purchasers of the game at its released each received an exclusive commemorative ‘e-ticket’ voucher as well as other giveaways including Epic Mickey t-shirts, posters and drawings by the game developers.

Disney’s Epic Mickey is now available exclusively for the Nintendo Wii in both standard and collector’s editions.

The Disney Store is expected to open early at 7:00 a.m. to allow fans to line up in order for an opportunity to dance along the store’s pixie dust trail to meet popular Disney star, Kyle Massey. In addition, an artist from the Junction Point game development team will provide guests with custom sketches of the characters found in Disney Epic Mickey.

Guests will also be able to experience the epic world of Wasteland as they play the game for the first time and even compete to “beat the Clocktower” for prizes. Adding to the excitement, iPads featuring the “Tales of Wasteland” Disney Epic Mickey Digicomics will be on hand for fans to enjoy.**

Junction Point creative director Warren Spector addressed the filled-to-capacity room yesterday evening by stating he had intended to make the panel mostly Q&A from the audience, but it wasn’t until eight minutes prior to the scheduled end of the panel that the questions even began (fortunately the panel was the last scheduled in the room for the day, so it went long as a result). Before that announcement, however, comics writer Peter David unofficially set the panel in motion by leading the entire room in a round of the Mickey Mouse Club March (which went surprisingly well I might add).

After showing the official Epic Mickey box art to a chorus of oohs and ahhs, Spector began talking about his own objective for the game. Job 1, he explained, was making Mickey Mouse a hero in the vein of Nintendo legends Mario and Link. Job 1.5, however, was to tell the tale of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the first true commercial success of Walt Disney’s while he was performing subcontracted work for Universal.

Spector then debuted the following featurette titled ‘The Tale of Oswald,’ featuring arguably some of the best footage (archival and gameplay) released to date:

Spector spent a great deal of time talking about how honored he felt bringing Oswald to the console screen — any screen — after more than 80 years. During the Q&A session, Spector also noted that since Epic Mickey is the first time Oswald ever had a voice of any kind, he bore and took delight in the responsibility of casting the individual who would henceforth be known as the voice of Oswald forever: Frank Welker. Assuming Job 1.5 pans out for Spector, he anticipates that Oswald will be launched into commercial success once more and repeatedly offered his hope for an Oswald plush.

The focus of the panel then shifted to the upcoming DigiComics and graphic novel for Epic Mickey, both written by Peter David. Spector said that video games are great at describing what’s happening now, but are not as good as offering backstory and letting the player know what’s going on inside the head of the characters, so the idea of the graphic novel and DigiComics came about. As we previously noted, Tales of the Wasteland will be a prequel anthology of six stories inspired by Oswald’s life. David added that all of the stories take place before Mickey inadvertently releases the Phantom Blot on the Wasteland and, at that time, it was ‘the happiest place in the world.’ Spector notes for example that as some of the released art shows, the Mad Doctor and Oswald were once friends and had a solid relationship but that it completely changed for the worse by the time the game picks up on the story.

TRON, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Muppets and Epic Mickey were the topics of discussion today during the Disney Publishing Worldwide panel at the 5th annual New York Comic-Con which kicked off today in New York City.

Briefly touching upon TRON, preview pages of the prequel graphic novel TRON: Betrayal and The Art of TRON: Legacy were shared. Since the titles themselves as well as many of the other TRON: Legacy titles (mostly geared towards tweens) were made available to browse through at the Disney Publishing Worldwide booth, there wasn’t much more needing to be mentioned on the topic.

More juicy news could be found in the discussion regarding Pirates of the Caribbean: Six Sea Chanties. With a cover by Eric Powell of The Goon and the writing talents including those such as Bryan Q. Miller and Rob Kidd (author of the Young Jack Sparrow series), the described graphic novel anthology will consist of one main story and six short stories. Currently slated to be released on April 19, 2011, the graphic novel will serve as a prequel to not only Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but will include stories going back as far as pre-dating the first film. Although it’s still early in development, stories are said to include dueling Jacks (Sparrow and the monkey that is), Barbossa and the skeleton curse. In preparation for the movie, Blackbeard and other yet-known characters will also be included in the stories.

Next on the docket was the multi-platform integration of books and the digital world. Going forward, it’s reasonable to expect that at least all of Disney’s original graphic novel properties will include some digital aspect. The first one talked about, whose introduction arrived in the way of a sample video, was the Muppets motion comic, debuting this fall. Based on Roger Langridge’s Meet the Muppets for BOOM! Studios, the Muppets motion comic will be made available on the Apple iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, Microsoft Xbox Live, Amazon Video Store, Sony PSN and DVD.
