ESPN to Pledge $1M to Boys and Girls Club for New Center
ESPN announced today its pledge of a lead contribution of $1 million toward construction of a new Boys and Girls Club and Family Center, in addition to its $400,000 gift in 2009 for land acquisition. The announcement was made by ESPN Executive Chairman George Bodenheimer in commemoration of ESPN’s upcoming 33rd anniversary (Sept. 7).
The proposed 38,000-square foot facility will house expansion of education and technology programs, a vibrant Teen Center, an enhanced Arts and Crafts Center, and will host a variety of athletic events in its 14,000-square foot field house for children in Bristol and across Connecticut. In addition, the Club plans to offer services for adults and seniors in the community. It will replace an 85-year old building that no longer has the space or the resources to meet the growing and changing needs of children. The new building will offer programs for people of all ages and will be a focal point for a variety of activities in downtown Bristol.
Michael Suchopar, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club and Family Center, said, “ESPN’s generous gift will help the Club create a dynamic space for Bristol children and their families. It will enable our organization to enhance the tone, culture and spirit of our community, while providing children with the proper tools to achieve their dreams. ESPN’s support will allow us to improve the lives of countless children from diverse backgrounds for many generations to come. We sincerely thank ESPN and admire their devotion to creating opportunities in their community.”
Bodenheimer added, “The Boys and Girls Club and Family Center is a jewel in the fabric of our community and we are pleased to continue supporting its mission. We are truly investing in the future of our youth and our home city.”
Bodenheimer is an honorary chairman of the Boys and Girls Club and Family Center’s Capital Campaign and is an alumnus of a Boys and Girls Club.
ESPN’s commitment to the Boys and Girls Club and Family Center organization spans more than 30 years of support, including the Imagine Nation Museum, the outreach program at Cambridge Park, the school-based programs, preschool programs and a playground construction project at Brackett Park. In addition, ESPN employees regularly volunteer at the Club’s sites through the company’s corporate outreach initiative called Team ESPN.

Photos: Michelle Obama, Disney Channel Stars Visit Disney World for ‘Let’s Move’
On a tour to celebrate the second anniversary of her Let’s Move! initiative, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to hundreds of children and parents at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex about the importance of healthy living. She also recognized the efforts of Disney Magic of Healthy Living, which partners with parents in their quest to raise healthy, happy kids.
“I want to thank Disney for all that they’ve done to support “Let’s Move” and to make sure our kids are eating right and being active,” Obama told the audience before joining Disney Channel and Disney XD stars for the new dance, “The Platypus Walk,” inspired by the hugely popular “Phineas and Ferb” character Perry the Platypus.
U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson welcomed the crowd of nearly 1,500 children and families, demonstrating his own commitment to physical fitness by completing 50 push-ups on stage.
After addressing the audience, Obama welcomed the children to visit five Disney Magic of Healthy Living activity stations along with Disney Channel Stars Debby Ryan (“Jessie”), Roshon Fegan (“Shake It Up”), and Disney XD stars Doc Shaw and Kelsey Chow (“Pair of Kings”) and Olivia Holt (“Kickin’ It”). There, professional athletes helped children hone their physical fitness skills. Children ran sprints with renowned football coach Tom Shaw, completed drills with members of the Orlando City Soccer team and practiced their tennis serve with tennis professional James Blake.
Brandon Delfosse, a 13-year-old student at Orlando Science School and member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida, attended the event and was pleased Obama and Disney supported healthy living. “It’s very cool knowing someone cares about you… It’s smart. Disney is popular, and it helps get the word out.”
Disney Magic of Healthy Living provides children and families with engaging content, useful tools and unique experiences to help make healthier lifestyles simple and fun. The 2010 launch of Disney Magic of Healthy Living included a series of public service announcements featuring the first lady that inspire children to take control of their own health, fitness and nutrition, and encourage their families and friends to do the same.
For more information about the program, as well as recipes, tips and videos, visit Disney.com/TryIt and Family.com/TryIt.
Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative has made significant progress since launching in February 2010. Parents, businesses, educators, elected officials, members of the military, chefs, physicians, athletes, childcare providers, community and faith leaders and children themselves have made substantial commitments to improve the health of children. Through working together with Let’s Move!, these groups have provided children with healthier food and greater opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities, helped get families the information they need to make healthier decisions, supported a healthy start in early childhood, and have worked to ensure more people have access to healthy, affordable food.

Agents Peter Greenberg and Eugene Lee are profiled along with their clients New York Mets’ pitcher Johan Santana and NFL hopefuls Jacquian Williams and Robert Hughes, prior to being drafted.
ESPN Films, creators of the Emmy-nominated and Peabody award-winning ’30 for 30′ film series, is airing a new film each Tuesday night through November 8. The remaining films of the new slate will air as follows:

ESPN Announces foursquare Partnership to Provide Sporting Events Information
ESPN today announced an agreement to supply sports venue data on foursquare’s newly launched Events platform, enhancing the check-in experience at sporting events with game time, teams, venue, location information and more. With the new feature, fans will not only be able to share their check-ins at the venue, but also access all the news and information from ESPN about the game.
“Having ESPN integrated into foursquare’s check-in functionality is a great way to serve highly engaged fans at the game,” said John Kosner, Senior Vice President, Digital and Print Media at ESPN. “Teaming up with the talented team at foursquare is in line with our goal to deliver our content wherever fans are, and foursquare’s growing audience of 10 million users is an important place for us to be.”
“Through our new Events platform, users can easily tell their friends not just where they are, but also what they’re doing, while unlocking valuable information about the events they’re attending,” said Jonathan Crowley, Director of Business Development for foursquare. “We’re thrilled to work with ESPN to provide our more than 10 million users with the most up-to-date information on the sporting events they’re checking in to.”
ESPN will provide facts, stats, and other up-to-the-minute news on ESPN-branded venue detail pages for major sporting events including NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, college football and basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, racing and more. In addition, ESPN has launched a foursquare brand page at https://foursquare.com/espn that features Tips left at sports venues around the world along with links to relevant ESPN apps and pages. Some examples of Tips at the ballpark include:
- Miller Park (Milwaukee): Brett Wurst. Stosh. Guido. Frankie Furter. Cinco. Sausage Race. Bottom of the 6th. Be there.
- Citizens Bank Park (Philadelphia): Be sure to find the McNally’s stand out in left field, home of Mike Schmidt’s namesake (in sandwich form): The Schmitter. This beast features sliced steak topped with tomatoes, fried onions, 3 layers of cheese, special sauce… and grilled salami.
- Safeco Field (Seattle): Sushi at the ballpark? Why not! Go to Rice-N-Roll in Section 137, and grab yourself an Ichi-Roll. And if you want the full experience, eat 51 of ‘em.
- Tropicana Field (Tampa Bay): Peer out to right field. In a sea of teal, you’ll see a lone yellow seat in section 144. That’s where Wade Boggs’ 3,000th hit (a home run) landed back on August 7, 1999.
- Ballpark in Arlington (Texas): True story: distance-wise, Arlington’s upper deck is the farthest away from the diamond in MLB history. Talk about nosebleeds…
At the conclusion of a game, users will see an ESPN link in their foursquare check-in history, pointing them to a mobile site where they will be able to view more information about the event. Users who follow ESPN on foursquare and check in at sporting events and venues where ESPN has left Tips will unlock a branded “ESPN Foam Finger” badge as well.
Foursquare is one of the first collaborators to leverage elements of ESPN’s new and developing API program. ESPN is planning to release a set of APIs more broadly later this year.
