Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Helps Break Record for World’s Largest Swimming Lesson
More than 500 guests of all ages at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon at the Walt Disney World Resort joined more than 10,000 participants on four continents for the record-breaking World’s Largest Swimming Lesson on June 3.
Participants at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon also received a free DVD, Disney’s Wild About Safety with Timon and Pumbaa: Safety Smart in the Water. In the DVD, Timon and Pumbaa help children learn that fun in the water starts with safety.
Three-time Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines joined Mickey Mouse and Goofy just outside the Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool for the official start to the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson.
During the 30-minute lesson taking place simultaneously all over the world, guests received instruction on proper swimming strokes, kicks and floating techniques.
“We were honored Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park served as the official headquarters location for the record-breaking World’s Largest Swimming Lesson,” said Jean Gallagher, director of water parks for Walt Disney World Resort. “Safety is a cornerstone of our company and at the heart of everything we do. The record-breaking World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is a reminder to guests of all ages that when they step in the water we want them to have fun and be safety smart at the same time.”
Tragically, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintended, injury-related death in children over the age of one. In fact, more than one in four fatal drowning victims is under the age of 14. Research shows if a child doesn’t learn to swim before the third grade, they likely never will.

In the holiday movie, ”Santa Baby 2: Christmas Maybe,” McCarthy stars as Santa’s business-minded daughter, Mary Class, who must contend both with Santa’s mid-life crisis and his elves going on strike right at the height of Christmas madness. Santa’s tired of the responsibilities of the job and is ready to pass on the reins to Mary, who feels torn between the family business and running her own high stakes firm in New York City, along with balancing a relationship with the love of her life, Luke (Dean McDermott). The situation gets increasingly dire when a disgruntled former elf, Teri (Kelly Stables), in cunning disguise, sows dissension at the North Pole in an effort to take over Christmas. “Santa Baby 2: Christmas Maybe” premieres on Sunday, December 13 (8:00-10:00PM ET/PT).
