Following in the footsteps of the record-breaking Marvel Studios’ release Marvel’s The Avengers, production on the highly anticipated film Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black, has commenced production in Wilmington, North Carolina. The production schedule will also include locations in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, Miami, Florida and China.
Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, Iron Man 3 returns Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic Super Hero character Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle as James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan. Set for release in the U.S. on May 3, 2013, Marvel’s Iron Man 3 marks the second feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.
Iron Man 3 continues the epic, big-screen adventures of the world’s favorite billionaire inventor/Super Hero, Tony Stark aka ‘Iron Man.’ Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard and Dan Mintz.
The creative production team on the film includes two-time Oscar®-winning director of photography John Toll, ASC (Braveheart, Legends of the Fall), production designer Bill Brzeski (The Hangover, Due Date), editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. (Marvel’s The Avengers, Captain America: The First Avenger) and Peter S. Elliot (Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer), and costume designer Louise Frogley (Quantum of Solace, Contagion).
Disney Looks Strong on Visual Effects for 2010 Oscar Consideration
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released its shortlist of contenders for Achievement in Visual Effects (VFX) last night and a third of them are films by Walt Disney Studios and Marvel Studios, although they’re definitely up against some tough competition. Selected for consideration are: Alice in Wonderland, Iron Man 2, Price of Persia: The Sands of Time, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and TRON: Legacy.
The current list of 15 will be narrowed down to seven in early January by members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee who had selected the initial list. At that point, all members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films on Thursday, January 20. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration. The 83rd Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network.
Other films being considered for the award are: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Clash of the Titans, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, The Last Airbender, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Shutter Island, and Unstoppable.

Walt Disney Studios Buys Distribution Rights for ‘Iron Man 3,’ ‘The Avengers’ from Paramount
The Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios announced they have reached an agreement under which Paramount will transfer its worldwide marketing and distribution rights to Disney for Marvel Studios’ The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Paramount will remain the worldwide distributor of the upcoming films, Thor and Captain America, as well as the previously released Iron Man and Iron Man 2.
Under terms of the new deal, Disney will pay Paramount $115 million for the transfer of the distribution rights to Iron Man 3 and The Avengers to be paid on the theatrical release dates. These monies will serve as a minimum guarantee against the distribution fees.
“In completing this agreement, Disney will now assume worldwide marketing and distribution of The Avengers and Iron Man 3 and leverage these two highly-anticipated films across the multiple global platforms of The Walt Disney Company,” said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “We appreciate the tremendous momentum that Paramount established with these iconic Marvel characters and look forward to propelling the brand even further in the coming years.”
“Five years ago, when Paramount and Marvel made our initial deal, both our businesses were in very different places,” said Brad Grey, Chairman & CEO of Paramount Pictures. “We are grateful for the partnership we have had with the terrific Marvel team over these years and proud of the work we have done together. Today, this new agreement is the right deal for Paramount, for Marvel and for Disney. We look forward to working together on Thor and Captain America, and we wish Disney and Marvel the utmost success, in what we know will be a very productive and wide-ranging partnership.”
“Paramount has been a wonderful partner in helping Marvel Studios bring our characters to the big screen,” said Alan Fine, Office of the President, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. “This agreement makes sense now that Marvel is part of The Walt Disney Company.”
Paramount will release Marvel Entertainment’s Thor and Captain America worldwide beginning on May 6 and July 22 of 2011, respectively. The Avengers will be licensed to Epix under Paramount’s existing pay television arrangement.

Photocall: ‘Iron Man 2′ Press Junket at Los Angeles Four Seasons Hotel
A press junket and photocall were offered yesterday in support of Disney/Marvel’s upcoming summer blockbuster Iron Man 2. In attendance for the photocall were Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Ironman), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Don Cheadle (Lt. Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes), Scarlett Johansson (Natalie Rushman/Natasha Romanoff), Mickey Rourke (Ivan Vanko) and Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan/Director).

Disney Home Video Launches Site for ‘Iron Man’ Animated Series on DVD
Continuing our coverage on what we considered to be the first Marvel-related public move Disney made since it acquired the comics powerhouse, we were pleased to learn that Buena Vista Home Entertainment has finally launched the official site for the DVD edition of the Iron Man animated series produced back in the mid-90s.
Although the animated series has been released on DVD in Europe, this is the first time the series has made its way to the home video market in North America. It will become available to own on May 4, but has been available for pre-order on Amazon.com

Spidey’s Slippery Slope: The Kirbys’ Spectacular Case Against Marvel
Just how serious is Disney/Marvel about producing an Ant-Man movie? Few in the world are likely to be more interested than the children of comics author Jack Kirby who have named Ant-Man along with Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers, Thor, Nick Fury a seemingly endless list of comics titles and specific issues in a lawsuit claiming they are the rightful (co-)owners of these creations.
Filed on March 9 in the US District Court in the Central District of California, the complaint filed by Lisa, Barbara, Neal and Susan Kirby as well as the estate of Kirby’s wife, Rosalind, rebquests a trial by jury, seeking unspecified damages against previous and current earnings on these properties of which Disney/Marvel has current control.
Making a very persuasive argument, particularly if it’s all true, the complaint inks a portrait in which a financially strapped Marvel purchased the comics from freelancer Jack Kirby ad hoc — sans contracts and that Kirby created everything on his own time in his own place of residence with his own tools so that he was at no time able to be considered ‘work for hire’ as Disney/Marvel has contended.

We Called It! Iron Man the Animated Series Comes to DVD in May
Barely a week after the Disney-Marvel acquisition was made final, we announced that it appeared the first public Disney-Marvel action might have been to release the Iron Man animated series on DVD, something that previously had only been done in some parts of Europe.

Disney’s First Marvel-ous Move Since Acquisiton of Comics Powerhouse
Disney has made its first move since it acquired Marvel Entertainment this past year and it could prove to be a promising one for the company. But before we fly to conclusions, sorry, legions of Ant-Man fans, it’s not about him. Not yet.
In stark contrast to bringing to life some of the lesser characters, Disney’s first Marvel gesture relies on an established character who will literally be box office gold (and red) for Paramount when it releases Marvel’s Iron Man 2 this summer.
Disney has officially registered IronManOnDVD.com. No telling what Disney’s plans with the domain name are, but please allow us to speculate:
3. Disney could simply be doing nothing with it and just flexing their internet muscles
2. There could be an upcoming new animated straight-to-dvd film to coincide with the theatrical release as its been a common practice with comic films as of late
1. Disney could be planning to finally release Iron Man, the animated series that first debuted as part of The Marvel Action Hour in 1994-1996, on DVD. The series was previously released by Disney in Europe (DVD Region 2) in 2007 but they have never released it in North America, but have run the series on Disney XD.
