The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences named its nominees for the upcoming 86th Academy Awards, which will air in the United States on ABC on Sunday, March 2, 2014. While Saving Mr. Banks was snubbed from most of the main categories, it managed to garner a nomination for Best Original Score by Thomas Newman. But it was Walt Disney Animation Studios that shined this year, for two unsurprising nominations for Frozen: ‘Let It Go’ for Best Original Song (Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez) and Best Animated Feature where it will compete against Disney’s other contender, Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that three of Disney’s films from the past year — both of Marvel Studios’ films, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World as well as Jerry Bruckheimer’s The Lone Ranger have been shortlisted for nomination consideration in the category of visual effects (VFX).
The other films being considered for nominations in the category are: Elysium, Gravity, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Oblivion, Pacific Rim, Star Trek Into Darkness and World War Z. The shortlist was determined by the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee and members of the branch will have the opportunity to review a ten minute package from each film on January 9. Following the screening, the branch members will then select five of the films to be nominated.
