D23 Expo Day Two: Dick Cook and the Walt Disney Studios Present Everyone

It was news when it was announced that Dick Cook would be a keynote speaker at the D23 Expo on behalf of the Walt Disney Studios. It was big news when it was announced that he would be joined on stage by actor Nicolas Cage. It was headlines when D23 announced at the eleventh hour that directors Robert Zemeckis and Tim Burton would also take the stage. But what literally thousands of rabid Disney fans bore witness to this morning defies any category of news. Filled with exclusives and celebrities upon celebrities, even those who had an inkling there was more than Disney was letting on couldn’t have imagined what the Walt Disney Studio managed to pull off in front of the capacity crowd.

Getting settled in your seat, it  was impossible not to notice the orchestra setup at stage right – you knew then you were in for something a little extra. The lights dim and the orchestra fills the Arena with epic theme music as clips from Disney films begin to play. Then you start to hear singing voices as a 10 person choir chimes in when there are lyrics to be sung. Theme song after theme song, movie after movie, from Snow White to the Proposal and everything in-between. It has to be at least, oh, I don’t know… 23 minutes long. An absolute masterpiece crafted by Barnette Richie with music and songs sync’d perfectly every frame of the way, remarkably demonstrated by an extended clip of a musical number from Enchanted mid-way.

Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick CookThen Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook took the stage. He talked of his love for the company ever since he started as a steam train and monoral operator at the Disneyland Resort some 40 years ago. He spoke of quality being the underlying factor in movies produced by the studio. He talked about the animation studios and upcoming projects such as Cars 2 and Rapunzel which will be covered in depth when John Lasseter takes the same stage on Sunday. He talked about how for the first time in history the Walt Disney Studios will open its gate to the public and invite them to see a limited pre-release engagement of The Princess and the Frog in the studio’s newly renovated state-of-the-art theater as well as the special engagement in New York City’s famous Ziegfeld Theatre.

He acknowledged the work of Miramax before turning to the Touchstone Pictures label and its newest upcoming release The Last Song, written by Nicholas Sparks for and starring Miley Cyrus. And he mentioned the upcoming sequel Wild Hogs 2: Bachelor Ride.

Disney at Comic-Con, Day Two: Down the Rabbit Hole at the Alice in Wonderland Experience

For Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Walt Disney Studios has gone the extra mile to create this traveling exhibit featuring props and models from the upcoming feature. After entering the main doors, you travel down the rabbit hole into Alice’s room featuring a very large Alice model along with her dress, the drink me bottles, the eat me cakes and other props. Other rooms include the Mad Tea Party where you’ll find the Mad Hatter’s wardrobe (and hair), the Red Queen’s Throne room and the White Queen’s room which also contains battle gear for Alice and the Mad Hatter.

Photos from Disney at San Diego Comic-Con, Day One: 3-D Panel for Alice, Christmas Carol and Tron

Directors Tim Burton, Robert Zemeckis and Joe Kosinski (Photo by Eric Charbonneau/Le Studio/Wireimage)Unfortunately we couldn’t be there, but Disney sends us their best, or presented them anyway. The first ever 3D panel at Comic-Con featured emcee Patton Oswald (voice of Remy), directors Tim Burton, Robert Zemeckis and Joe Kosinski (pictured, left) as well as a host of surprise guests, footage and more.

In addition to the current projects, Burton offered that he’ll be working on his take of the supernatural cult-classic soap opera, Dark Shadows. Robert Zemeckis, having expressed interest in a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in the past, was unable to either confirm or deny if it’ll be on his plate any time soon.

It’s on Time! It’s on Time! I Don’t Have a Silly Rhyme! Alice in Wonderland Teaser Trailer Released

Yesterday, as you are probably aware, the teaser trailer to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland was released prematurely. Although we did manage to save our own copy, when it became evident that Walt Disney Studios was not a fan of the breach, it was decided to simply delete the post that linked to it. So for that we both apologize to and appreciate those who posted the many links to our site posted on forums all over (on some interesting non-Disney topic forums too).

New Hi-Res Portraits from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Your Chance to See Teaser Trailer

Johnny Depp as The Mad HatterIt’s not news, I know, but Disney has sent us hi-res images of the portraits of the Alice in Wonderland characters from the Vanity Fair photo shoot. Although the Red Queen portrait differs from the ones previously released online as she’s not holding the Duchess’ baby/pig.

I did crop the images to eliminate some whitespace on the top and bottom in order to maximize the real estate. They’ve been added to the Alice in Wonderland image gallery below.

In addition, Disney has added some graphics to the original group of portraits as pictured to the left so I’ve added those images to the gallery as well.

You can click on any of the thumbnails to view a larger image or click on the PicLens link to start a slideshow.
