It’s in Japanese (naturally), but this version of the trailer for Disney/Pixar’s upcoming film Monsters University gives a whole new dimension to the story we’ve come to know so far. In it, we see a very young Mike Wazowski in an apparent field trip to the Scare Floor at Monsters Inc. in which young Mike receives a gift that starts to shape his entire future.

There are also additional scenes which Mike appears to meet Sulley for the first time, as well as the scene in which Dean Hardscrabble (voiced by Helen Mirren) appears to be kicking the future pals out of the esteemed Scarer program.

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Screaming with laughter and fun, Monsters University stars the vocal talents of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray and Peter Sohn and is directed by Dan Scanlon and produced by Kori Rae. The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

‘Monsters University’ Poster Full of Character, Intrigue

'Monsters University' Character PosterA new international poster for Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University has been released and it’s chock full of characters from the film along with several confirmations (such as Randy Boggs (aka Randall) being affiliated with the Roar Omega Roar (ROR) fraternity as well as George Sanderson being in Jaws Theta Chi (JOX)), but what’s perhaps most telling is that none of the Omega Kappa (OK) students are in their respective uniforms. Instead, Mike, Sulley, Don, Squishy, Terri & Terry and Art all simply appear in clothing reading Monsters University. This and the fact that Omega Kappa’s fraternity house is actually in the basement of Squishy’s Mom’s house starts to make one wonder just how official OK starts out.

‘Monsters University’ Director Hints at Boo Tribute, Talks Prequel Timeline

'Monsters University' Teaser PosterEarlier this month, we had the opportunity to sit down with Monsters University director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae, along with John Goodman, for a few minutes as part of a roundtable at the Disney/Pixar presentation at the 110th American International Toy Fair in New York City.

Following up on a tip I had received the day before, I took the opportunity to explore what overlap — if any — we might see between Monsters University and the original Monsters Inc. film. Unfortunately Scanlon nearly skirted the question altogether: ‘Well I don’t want to say that, I think you should wait and see. I will say that it’s teeing up to the original film nicely.’

Almost as cryptic was Scanlon’s and Rae’s response to my question about a tribute to Boo in the upcoming prequel. Although I realized it would be impossible for Boo to directly appear in the film and I personally felt it would be impractical for her to appear in any direct form, I imagined with Pixar’s knack for inside jokes and tributes, it wouldn’t be far off to anticipate getting Mary Gibbs (who voiced Boo as a toddler) to return to the recording studio. So can we expect the voice of Boo to return to the big screen in some form? ‘I can’t say anything about that, but,’ Scanlon replied before producer Rae interjected with ‘but there’s a bunch of new characters that we’re really excited about.’ Scanlon followed up with ‘there’s a lot of new characters. There’s lots of fun cameos here and there, so… yeah, keep an eye out.’

And new characters there are plenty. While we’ve been introduced to fellow Oozma Kappa students Don Carlton, Art, Terri & Terry Perry and Scott ‘Squishy’ Squibbles, there are plenty more characters to be formally introduced, especially sisters of the Slugma Slugma Kappa (EEK) and Eta Hiss Hiss (HSS) sororities. In addition to Carrie, we can probably look forward to getting to knowing fellow students Nadya, Sonia, Rosie, Violet. Carla, Brynn, Rhonda and more.

And just in case you missed it, be sure to check out our additional coverage of the Monsters University Toy Fair event including an exclusive in-depth look at upcoming toys for this spring and fall.

TOY FAIR: ‘Monsters University’ Toys Fall Collection Sneak Peek

'Monsters University' Scare Simulator Playset by Spin Master

As part of the 110th American International Toy Fair in New York, Disney offered an invite-only look at some of the upcoming toys and clothing to support Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University, in theaters on June 21, 2013. The majority of the products on display were from Spin Master who serves as the master licensee for the film. Spin Master, who recently also began releasing products in support of Monsters Inc., previously created waves in the Disney universe when it served as the master licensee for TRON: Legacy, infusing technology in play that hadn’t been seen before. The tradition continues with Monsters University in which some of its most advanced toys don’t use batteries at all, yet manage to produce detailed and intricate amusing actions just the same.

Among the previewed collection were the Scare Majors featuring Art, Mike Wazowski and Sulley. By squeezing each of the figures’ legs together, the action figures respond with realistic and often humorous movements. The Scare Students figure collection offer a level of poseability along with some creative features respective to each character: Squishy is (naturally) squishable while Mike’s eye can be rotated. Other figures in the first wave include Sulley (in both naked and Oozma Kappa forms), Johnny, Art, Terri & Terry and Randy. Spin Master will also be releasing buddy pack sets of figurines called Scare Pairs. The first wave includes: Squishy, Sulley (both naked as well as Oozma Kappa), Mike Wazowski (both naked and in Monsters University form), Art, Randy, Terri & Terry, Dean Hardscrabble, Carla, Johnny, George Sanderson and Carrie. Also available will be the Roll-A-Scare collection of figures which comically spring to life from a spherical form to full-body and can be used with the Roll-A-Scare Playset, sold separately. Not quite action figure size is the Archie the Scare Pig football-shaped-thing-that-makes-funny-noises-when-you-squeeze-it, whatever it does.

Spin Master really shows off its innovation with the Scare Off Sulley which features several modes of play, allowing Sulley to engage in a scare off with children (scare him enough and he will fall over) along with acting as a room guard. The My Scare Pal Sulley has a few modes of play of his own allowing him to respond accordingly when you give him a squeeze. Meanwhile the innovative (and adjustable) Sulley Monster Mask takes role play to the next level, allowing children to operate the power-less mouth and eyebrows which open/close and raise/lower automatically along with their jaw.

Also on display at the event were Fisher-Price’s Imaginext line of toys which now bring Monsters University to where Carsand Toy Story have also successfully been. In addition to several figurines, Fisher-Price will be introducing three sets which include University Row, the Scare Floor and a CDA truck with agent. All of the sets include interactive elements which help children bring their favorite moments from Monsters University and Monsters Inc. to life. Mike and Sulley plush from Just Play as well as Monsters University shoes from etnies were also on display.

Although Disney Store wasn’t represented, the official Monsters University Campus Store brought a couple of its items to display at the event, though everything shown was already available. We do have it on good authority, however, that the campus store plans on introducing many more items in support of the school/movie as time goes by. As will Disney Store, who will introduce an entire collection including toys, action figures, luggage, apparel and more. One of the more unique items from Disney Store will be the the Monsters University Speak N Scare Action Figures. In tandem with a free digital app, kids can rate their own ‘roar’ or enhance it using different tools. The app can also sync with the action figures to control their scaring actions. Other modes of play include play mode with more than 40 phrases, scare mode with five different sound-activated roars and interactive mode that allows the action figures to converse with one another.

After the event, we were invited up to Spin Master’s booth on the Toy Fair floor to take a sneak peek at even more Monsters University items coming out later this year. Although many of the items are still top secret and we unfortunately can’t share any details yet, there were plenty of upcoming toys that we are pleased to share with you below.

The first item to catch our eye was the ‘Who’s Behind the Door?’ board game. With recognizable game play (think ‘Guess Who?’), the board game adds a bit of an updated twist and — of course — features characters from the film. Although we were unfortunately unable to see it in action, the Scare Simulator Playset brings a touch of the original Monsters Inc. film to the world of play, allowing children to use the included exclusive Sulley figure to learn scaring techniques including ‘shadowing’ in addition to the scare itself. Other more traditional toys include the R/C Monster Truck Sulley, the Monsters University Monster Slingshot, talking flashlights which project an image specific to the character and giggle balls, which rattle off soundbites of the respective character as they roll across the floor.

Just as they have been recently for Monsters Inc., Spin Master will also be producing a line of plush for Monsters University. We caught glimpses of a Sulley in a Monsters University tee, a medium size Art plush and small Shake & Scare plush which produce lines from the film when shaken. Spin Master will also be producing a My Scare Pal Mike which humorously reacts when you pull his arms and legs and poke him in the eye.

Below is a short video of our tour of upcoming Monsters University toys from both the event as well as Spin Master’s booth, followed by a gallery of images of some of the toys we got to play with ahead of their release. The first wave of Monsters University toys are set to hit the shelves on May 10 while many more will be released later this year in the fall.

TOY FAIR: ‘Monsters University’ Minor Spoilers Ahead of New Trailer Debut

'Monsters University' POP! Vinyl and Plushies from Funko

While potential film spoilers and the American International Toy Fair often go hand-in-hand, rare is the opportunity that we are able to actually photograph (with permission) new items that contain information not yet disclosed to the public. That said, yesterday we were able to do just that with some supporting merchandise for Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University, just ahead of the new trailer launch at 9 am ET and the full Toy Fair product launch with John Goodman and Billy Crystal which kicks off an hour later, at 10.

Despite their products being highly stylized, Funko brings us our first good look at a Randall Boggs in his younger form. It’s probably not a stretch to imagine that back at Monsters University, the bespectacled Randall — or Randy as he appeared to be called based on other merchandise — may have excelled in the scare program, but not so much in the quad, helping to shape the monster he becomes and his relationships with others in Monsters Inc. Funko will offer POP! vinyl figures and wacky wobblers of Randall, Mike Wazowski and Sulley; Mike and Sulley POP! plushies; and a Sulley 3D bookmark. The ‘top secret’ patches on the pictures Sulley figures is covering the Oozma Kappa fraternity logo, which is ironically odd since that fact has been public since November.

Monogram International, best known for its desk accessories, keychains, banks and other tchotchkes, offers up a slew of small items in support of Monsters UniversityItems include magnets, a lanyard/badge holder, eye poppers and fingerboards (which reveal Randy’s name as well as art for a character named Johnny).

Lastly for now (and in addition to other Monsters University toys we’ve already shared) is the Monsters University Imaginext collection from Fisher-Price. Building on the success of earlier franchises such as Toy Story and Cars, the Monsters University collection will launch with three sets. Of the three, we were able to preview two: the Child Detection Agency (CDA) vehicle with CDA agent figure and the Scare Floor playset with Mike Wazowski and Sulley figures. The figures appear as they do in Monsters Inc, but we are told this is still considered Monsters University as there is overlap between the two films. The third playset, which will preview later today at the media event, was called Monsters University [Fraternity?] Row, which will more directly reflect the content of the film.

Be sure to follow us on Twitter as we tweet live from the Monsters University media event as well as the American International Toy Fair to get a sneak peek of upcoming Disney products in real-time.

‘Monsters University’ Featurette Reveals Plot Points, First Clip (Minor Spoilers)

'Monsters University' Teaser PosterAnimation Fascination has uploaded a new featurette/sneak peek at Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University, presumed to be included on the upcoming Monsters Inc. blu-ray release. Narrated by director Dan Scanlon, the featurette offers up quite a bit of concept art along with some of the story which involves how rivals Mike Wazowski and James ‘Sulley’ Sullivan were rejected from the prized scaring educational track by Dean Hardscrabble and how Mike concocts a plan to get into the program. To pull it off, they must join the Oozma Kappa fraternity which — although is made up of other scare program rejects — is just OK with us.

Scanlon also talks about character development, particularly with Mike and Sulley, and also provides a good look at some of the other supporting cast, including Art.

P.S. Hi, Squishy’s Mom!

A new trailer for the film, which debuts in theaters on June 21, 2013, is expected this Monday at around 12 pm ET, in conjunction with a Monsters University event being held by Disney at the American International Toy Fair in New York, in which Scanlon will be joined in person by Billy Crystal and John Goodman.

TOY FAIR: Disney Sneak Peek: ‘Monsters University,’ ‘Planes,’ ‘Sofia the First’ and More

Just ahead of the 110th annual American International Toy Fair kick-off this Sunday, Disney Consumer Products has shared a sneak peek at just some of the toys coming later this year, representing some of its iconic properties. From Monsters University, Oz the Great and Powerful and Planes to ‘Sofia the First’ and ‘Jake and the Never Land Pirates’ to proven franchises such as Minnie Mouse, Disney Fairies and — of course — the princesses, these toys represent some a new take on classic play, often integrating cutting edge technology to enhance the experience.

On Monday, Disney will give an invited audience an exclusive look at some of the upcoming merchandising from Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University. To celebrate the announcement (which may or may not include a look at the new trailer), the film’s stars John Goodman and Billy Crystal will join director Dan Scanlon in providing a sneak peek and some insight into the highly anticipated prequel.

While we can expect plenty more from Monsters University such as action figures, vehicles, playsets, plush figures, preschool, remote control items and more to help kids recreate key moments from the film through innovative and fun features, Disney is providing a first look into a couple of the coolest items from Spin Master, who recently released several products for Monsters Inc.

[SinglePic not found]

Children will be able to recreate the fun, action and adventure of the film during playtime with products such as Scare Off Sulley from Spin Master, a feature plush that utilizes life-like animatronics and sound and light detection technology to change play modes and sense the environment. Kids can start their Scare Training as Sulley teaches them everything he knows. But once he feels they’re ready, prepare for a Scare Off! Scream loud enough and Sulley will fall backwards in fear! Scare Off Sulley is the most interactive Monsters University toy delivering Scare Training, Speed Scare, Scare ‘O Meter, Room Guard and the Scare Off Challenge! Ages

The Monsters University Sulley Monster Mask transforms kids into real monsters! It’s 100% kid powered. As your jaw opens, closes or moves side to side, the Sulley Monster Mask’s eyebrows and lips move too – creating fun, scary and memorable faces.

[SinglePic not found]

From Disney Toon Studios — and inspired by Disney/Pixar’s Cars — Planes tells the story of Dusty Crophopper in the pursuit of his dream. Toys set to be released in support of the film include an all-new collection of die cast vehicles, play sets and the ‘Planes Tilt and Fly’ and ‘Planes Air Race Trackset’ from Mattel, anchoring the Planes toy line. Planes fans can also recreate their favorite moments from the film with the deluxe remote control U-Command Dusty from Thinkway, complete with an infrared remote control feature allowing kids to program this Dusty with over 1,000 action combo sequences. Mattel will also offer the innovative Planes Pilot Pal Dusty Remote Control Plane which allows children to control Dusty by attaching the wing-shaped controllers to their own arms.

Disney Sofia the First Magical Talking Castle (Mattel) MSRP: $59.99 Available: July 2013

Disney Junior’s newest sensation, ‘Sofia the First,’ will no doubt be topping the must-have lists of every aspiring princess in the upcoming year. While Disney Store has already launched a limited line of products that are near impossible to keep in stock, look for other companies like CDI and Mattel to up the ante. Featured here are CDI’s Talking Magical Amulet which not only allows the child to wear Sofia’s Amulet of Avalor, but will teach valuable lessons as well. Mattel will introduce the Magical Talking Castle which interacts by playing actual phrases from the television series.

Also representing the Disney Junior fans will be brand new DUPLO sets from LEGO including Jake and the Never Land Pirates’ Bucky set. Fisher-Price will also be introducing Cheering Minnie who speaks 13 different phrases as well as dances and cheers to the classic rock anthem ‘Hey Mickey.’

Disney Princess Ultimate Dream Castle (Mattel) MSRP: $189.99 Available: June 2013

Mattel will also be updating its Disney Princess Ultimate Dream Castle. This time around, instead of a flying carpet, it’s Rapunzel who lends a hand hair to serve as the 3-story castle’s elevator. Not only does the castle come with 30 accessories, but Mattel is also introducing the Disney Magic Mirror app for Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad that will help create several augmented reality experiences.

This year will also be the year of The Little Mermaid, Ariel. In support of The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition on blu-ray on October 1, look for special merchandise to commemorate the classic film and the Disney princess it gifted us.

Below is a gallery of the items mentioned above as well as several more that are coming soon to a toy store near you. Be sure to follow us on Twitter as we will bring highlights of other Disney toys at the American International Toy Fair in New York City beginning Saturday at the Hasbro preview event, followed by the LEGO event, the Monsters University event and much, much more!

REPORT: ‘Disney Infinity’ Will Launch Skylanders Rival June 2013

Disney Infinity - Toy Box Mode

At a launch event held earlier today at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California, Disney Interactive Co-President John Pleasants was joined by John Lasseter to announce ‘Disney Infinity,’ a multi-platform experience which will certainly prove to be one of the most ambitious projects to date in the world of video games.

The announcement confirms everything we have reported previously. Using a combination of plastic figures, a ‘Disney Infinity’ reader and more, players will have the ability to allow Pixar and Disney characters to interact with each other directly in a video game, as demonstrated by the screen shot to the left which features Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 alongside Bullseye, Mr. Incredible, Mike Wazowski and Sulley.

In addition to the toy box mode, an additional plastic trophy will open up a Play Set mode in which players are free to explore individual worlds from the Disney and Pixar universes such as Monsters University campus, Radiator Springs, Phineas and Ferb, The Lone Ranger and Toy Story Space.

In addition, specialized token/coins (available in blind packs) will allow the gamer to add multiple attributes to their player as well as add additional features to the play sets, as desired.

With the product, gamers receive figures for Sulley, Captain Jack Sparrow, Mr. Incredible), a landmark token (Monsters University ) and an enhancement token/coin. Going further, expansion packs will become available with the additional play sets, figures and multiple waves of the ability coins.

Below are a couple of screen shots from the game, photos of some of the tokens and concept art of many of them. Additional characters include Mike Wazowski, Randall, Hector Barbossa, Davy Jones, Mrs. Incredible, Syndrome, Dash, Violet, Woody, Jack Skellington, Agent P, Rapunzel, Anna (Frozen), Ice Queen (Frozen), Sorcerer Mickey, Tow Mater and Francesco Bernoulli.

At launch for ‘Disney Infinity,’ a Radiator Springs playset from Disney/Pixar’s Cars will be available complete with Lightning McQueen and Holly Shiftwell. Future expansion packs will include: The Lone Ranger with the Lone Ranger and Tonto; ‘Toy Story in Space’ with Jessie and Buzz Lightyear; and ‘Phineas and Ferb’ with Phineas and Ferb.

Below is a gallery of screenshots and artwork/images for ‘Disney Infinity.’

Additional photos and videos from today’s event will be posted here as they become available.

VIDEO: ‘Disney Infinity’ Announcement Preview

Disney Infinity Announcement at El Capitan Theatre

As Disney Interactive prepares to introduce the world to its multi-platform ‘Disney Infinity’ video game, Stitch Kingdom continues to be at the forefront of reporting the game news as it develops. Later this morning, Disney and its Avalanche Software developer plan on introducing the game at the historic El Capitan Theatre at an invitation-only event. Presiding over the announcement will be DIMG co-president John Pleasants as well as John Lasseter.

Billed as ‘Toy Box,’ the first video game in which Disney and Pixar characters unite and play together, we are anticipating the announcement to include many features reminiscent of Activision’s popular ‘Skylanders’ franchise, though nothing has yet to be confirmed by Disney.

As preparations for the event continue, the El Captain has been transformed to support the game, including a marquee that reads ‘THEIR WORLDS. YOUR IMAGINATION. NO RULES.’ and promotes the use of Twitter hashtag #DisneyInfinity and the website http://disney.com/infinity (which forwards to https://infinity.disney.com) but is not yet active at press time. Inside, a large standee featuring the Disney Infinity logo and flanked by representations of Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Mr. Incredible and Monster University’s Sulley.

The announcement is scheduled to take place at 2 pm ET/11 am PST. Be sure to follow @stitchkingdom on Twitter for more exciting live updates throughout the day.
