‘Epic Mickey 2′ Rainbow Caverns, Rainbow Falls, Costumes, Inkwells, Photo Mode, Soundtrack and MORE
Earlier this week, Disney Interactive and Junction Point Studio held a special exclusive event at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA to unveil brand new areas and worlds for both ‘Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two’ and ‘Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Illusion’ as well as demo the game for the first time on the Nintendo Wii U, along with other surprises which enhance gameplay.
The new areas shown for the first time are called ‘Rainbow Falls’ (heavily influenced by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) and ‘Rainbow Caverns’ and are inspired by the extinct Disneyland attraction, ‘Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland,’ a 1960 expansion of the ‘Rainbow Caverns Mine Train’ and primarily where ‘Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’ lies today. Although the attraction is no longer inside the park, many remnants from it are still alive and well and being preserved throughout Frontierland. Like its real-world counterpart, in The Wasteland, the attraction was one of the first built and nowadays play home to the giant Projector Substation that supplies power to all of the projectors across the world.
Rainbow Caverns itself is split into two areas: the Angel side and the Demon side, which includes a maze filled with cascading fire in which players ‘must’ turn wrenches to alternate the sheets of fire to navigate the maze — of course there may be a way or two to help the navigation process, which one might find by game exploration.
Of course introducing new lands also means introducing new projection levels, the side-scrolling adventures that help players transition between worlds. Here we had an opportunity to explore levels based on ‘Building A Building’ (1933) and the ‘Night on Bald Mountain’ from Disney’s Fantasia (1940). A sharp eye also caught mention of a level based on the first Silly Symphonies short, ‘The Skeleton Dance’ (1929). You may not be able to play them all right away, however, as it turns out that how you play the game not only determines which lands and characters you’ll encounter, but how you’ll transition between them as well! As part of the game’s lore, when the earthquakes and other disasters struck The Wasteland between the two games, all of the projectors went down as well. This is when Gus (voiced by Cary Elwes) and the rest of the Gremlins built the DEC (or Dahl Engineering Corridors, named after famed children’s author and Gremlins co-creator Roald Dahl) system underground, using Disney memorabilia that had fallen from the sky. How you play a level determines whether you can jump through the projector to play the game based on the short, or whether you must go underground and face different challenges, navigating tons of Disneyana inspired directly from the Disney Archives.
On the same topic of lore, the game also introduces a mysterious new area called ‘The Observatory,’ a place where players can go to peer through a telescope and peak around the skies (from which the forgotten Disneyana falls) and perhaps unlock some of the mysteries of The Wasteland and the history of its inhabitants. At a private dinner held later that same day at Disneyland’s private club, Club 33, Spector also suggested that the game contains an area called ‘Club 13′ inspired by the famed location.
There are also plenty of new ways to enhance and alter gameplay, such as costumes. According to Spector, as players navigate the game, they can ‘find, gifted with, awarded with or purchase’ costumes which will affect how Mickey and Oswald play the game (just exactly how is being kept a secret at this time). The hat shop located on Mean Street will serve as ‘the hub’ for costuming. Meanwhile, a pin shop serves as a place to exhibit pins that have been collected throughout the game as well a photo shop where gamer can reminisce of their time in the Wasteland by viewing in-game photos taken at various photo opportunity spots throughout the worlds, just as the real parks have, to help complete quests.
Another new addition is the use of inkwells, which can almost be thought of using paint and thinner on oneself, although the effects are temporary and — in the case of the latter — not quite as detrimental. Once the player jumps into an inkwell, they receive one of two effects based on the inkwell type: invisible ink and indelible ink. The exceptional play on words allow Mickey and Oswald to either become invisible (allowing them to sneak past enemies) or invulnerable (allowing them to walk through thinner for example). Rather than being time limited in their use, the limitations are actually based on physics: as the characters jump, run or walk, the ink will visually drip off of them at a rate according to their movement. Movement speed is variable depending on the pressure applied to the analog controls, so it’s possible to sneak around almost indefinitely just by moving at a snail’s pace. By either painting in or thinning out objects around the inkwells, players are also able to convert them between invisible and indelible modes.
Below is a video of the full presentation from the event, featuring not only Warren Spector, but also Peter Ong from DreamRift who talks about ‘Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Illusion’ for Nintendo 3DS as well as shares some of the newly released screens from the game featuring the Maleficent dragon from Sleeping Beauty and the world based on The Little Mermaid.
If that’s not enough, a soundtrack for ‘Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of 2′ will also be available via digital download and Amazon on-demand disc beginning November 13, 2012. Musicians Wanted by Walt Disney World for Interactive Entertainment Experience
Casting notices have gone up seeking saxophone, clarinet and percussionists with ‘energetic and outgoing personalities’ for a new entertainment experience at the Magic Kingdom. There is no indication where the performances will be held, but the theme park has recently put out casting calls for circus acts and other improv groups believed to be used as part of the New Fantasyland Expansion at the Magic Kingdom.
While the saxophone and clarinet positions are listed as being on a substitution basis, the percussion act is a full time gig and adds that familiarity with Spike Jones’ music is desired. All of the positions are described as being part of a ‘highly interactive, comedic and unique atmospheric experience [that] will bring fantasy and fun to each Guest. Each experience demands high energy and a passion for seeking out guest interaction.’
Like the circus acts, auditions for these roles are by appointment only on a limited first come, first serve basis and must be made by calling 407-397-3285.

ABC’s ‘Nashville’ Music to be Released Weekly on iTunes by Big Machine Records
ABC Studios and Big Machine Records, the leading independent Nashville-based record label home to superstars such as Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts, announced today an exclusive partnership to release and market music from the critically-acclaimed upcoming ABC series “Nashville.” Stars Connie Britton, Hayden Panettiere, Charles Esten, Jonathan Jackson, Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio are among the cast slated to sing original content created for the series by established and breakout songwriters. Grammy® Award-winning producer T Bone Burnett serves as the executive music producer. Dubbed one of fall’s most anticipated new TV dramas, “Nashville,” premiering Wednesday, October 10 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET) on the ABC Television Network, was shot entirely in Music City, and pulls back the curtain to reveal the inner workings of the music industry.
Under this new partnership, Big Machine Records will release original music from “Nashville” each week on both iTunes and ABC’s Music Lounge. Multiple songs from the show’s first episode will become available on iTunes beginning October 9, including “If I Didn’t Know Better” — a song written by John Paul White and Arum Rae and sung by Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio.
“This is a dynamic and innovative partnership,” said Peter DiCecco, senior vice president, ABC Music Business Affairs. “Unlike any other show, the music originates with the story. By doing this, television’s next great drama will have a soundtrack to match.”
“Nashville is a project that is very close to our hearts, and we are elated to have found a partner with the same passion and vision for the accuracy we are trying to achieve in the show,” said Dawn Soler, senior vice president, ABC TV Music. “Scott Borchetta and the Big Machine Label Group came to the table with a great sense of enthusiasm and commitment to creativity that will uniquely maximize the music experience”.
“We are very selective of where and how we place our music into visual media,” said Scott Borchetta, president and CEO of the Big Machine Label Group. “Music has to feel organic, appropriate and authentic when it is paired with on-camera visuals. When I saw the pilot for ‘Nashville,’ I knew instantly we needed to be part of it. Not only does our partnership make sense given how closely the show reflects the nature of the music business, but the show’s talent has created some incredible music. We look forward to working with all of the amazing actors and actresses on the show.”
Music by Big Machine Label Group (BMLG) artists will also serve as the soundtrack for the series. The premiere episode of “Nashville” opens to the Eli Young Band’s No. 1 hit song, “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” a dynamic vocal group and song that are both nominated for CMA Awards (airing Thursday, November 1 from 8:00-11:00 p.m. ET on ABC). Other BMLG artists featured in the first episode include Greg Bates’ current Country radio hit, “Did It for the Girl,” as well as Justin Moore’s No. 1 smash hit, “Small Town USA.”
The Big Machine Label Group is composed of Big Machine Records, The Valory Co. and Republic Nashville (a joint partnership with Universal Records). “Nashville” is a co-production between ABC Studios and Lionsgate Television.

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ Soundtrack to Feature Music by Skrillex, AKB48, Owl City and More
The story of an arcade-game bad guy who embarks on a quest to prove he’s really a good guy, Wreck-It Ralph journeys through wildly diverse arcade-game worlds, including the ’80s-era, 8-bit video-game world of Fix-It Felix, Jr., the ultra-modern first-person shooter game Hero’s Duty and the candy-coated cart-racing game Sugar Rush. Helping to differentiate these worlds from one another are unique cinematography, animation, effects and music. ‘Music is another way to set the stage and make these worlds completely different,’ said producer Clark Spencer.
But not just any music. Filmmakers tapped diverse and unexpected artists to help tell the story. Composer Henry Jackman created the film’s score, which is complemented by original songs and music from Skrillex, AKB48, Owl City and Buckner & Garcia. Directed by Rich Moore, produced by Spencer and featuring the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch, Wreck-It Ralph crashes into theatres on Nov. 2, 2012. The film’s soundtrack from Walt Disney Records will be available Oct. 30, 2012 and is now available for pre-order from Amazon.
‘When it came to the music of Wreck-It Ralph,’ said Moore, ‘we wanted to work with some really talented artists and I love that they aren’t necessarily the people audiences expect to hear in a Disney animated movie. But when they hear the music and how it supports the story and drives the emotion, they’ll say, “This is perfect.”‘
Moore said he took his lead from the original director of animated movies. ‘Walt Disney was a pioneer when it came to music. What sounds like classics to us now — Ukulele Ike in Pinocchio, Peggy Lee in Lady and the Tramp — were very unexpected choices.’
THE SCORE
Classically trained composer Henry Jackman (Winnie the Pooh, X-Men: First Class) was called on to write the score for Wreck-It Ralph, helping to shape the diverse worlds with music. Jackman researched arcade games and incorporated their classic sounds into the score, bringing the arcade and its individual games to life. ‘The music transports you,’ said Moore. ‘It channels each era perfectly. [Henry Jackman] is fantastic.’
According to Jackman, the score was driven by the story, which allowed him to tap his classical roots, too. ‘When something emotional is developing, it actually opens the door to the orchestral score without it feeling imposed,’ he said.
ORIGINAL SONGS
Ralph’s quest leads him to the intense, cy-bug-infested world of Hero’s Duty, where he hopes to land a medal. Underscoring the chaos and excitement of the first-person shooter game, GRAMMY®-winning artist Skrillex wrote the game-play music, ‘Bug Hunt,’ hand-picking Netherlands’ producers/DJs/videogame soundtrack composers Noisia to remix the track for the album. “The mood of that game world is high-energy and futuristic. I make music with many different colors of the emotional spectrum–this reflects a more aggressive side of my music.”
Japan’s pop phenomenon AKB48 accompanies Ralph to the land of sweets with the aptly named theme song ‘Sugar Rush.’ ‘We’ve always thought of Sugar Rush — with its nod to anime — as a game that may have originated in Japan,’ said Spencer. ‘So we went to Japan and got the hottest J-pop group to perform the song that really sets the tone for this ’90s-era cart-racing game: young and hip.’
Owl City (‘Fireflies,’ ‘Good Time’) provides an upbeat and story-driven cap to the film with ‘When Can I See You Again?’ According to singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Adam Young, the song offers a bit of an emotional tug-of-war. ‘It’s a very bouncy, happy, uplifting song, but there’s a bittersweet part of it, leaving a key relationship in the film open-ended.’
Also contributing to the end credits are Buckner & Garcia, the team behind the 1982 Top-10 hit ‘Pac-Man Fever.’ Jerry Buckner of Buckner & Garcia co-produced the song ‘Wreck-It, Wreck-It Ralph’ with hit songwriter/producer Jamie Houston (Steven Tyler, Macy Gray). ‘It was great to be invited to contribute a song to the movie and soundtrack,’ said Buckner. ‘The song has an ’80s pop flavor with a contemporary twist — we’re really happy with how it turned out.’

‘Cinderella’ Collector’s Edition Soundtrack to Feature Newly Recorded ‘Lost Chords’
Continuing with what appears to be a new tradition, the ‘Cinderella Collector’s Edition’ soundtrack will contain several of the film’s ‘lost chords,’ re-recorded and fully produced just as the company has recently done for The Aristocats and The Rescuers
, according to Amazon.com
.
The Collector’s Edition will consist of 24 tracks with 14 of them being dedicated to songs that were written for but did not make it into the film for whatever reason. While the songs (‘I’m In The Middle of a Muddle,’ ‘Dancing On A Cloud,’ ‘The Dress My Mother Wore,’ ‘The Mouse Song,’ ‘The Face That I See In the Night,’ ‘Sing a Little, Dream A Little’ and ‘I Lost My Heart At the Ball’) have been released previously in their included demo form on DVD, they will each be accompanied by a fully produced version ‘featuring full orchestration and mastering as if they would have been included in original films.’ Unfortunately Amazon.com does not list who recorded the new tracks, but if the aforementioned releases are any indication, they will be performed by contemporary artists.
The soundtrack will be available to own on October 2, 2012, the same day the Blu-ray is released, and is currently available for pre-order.
