The musical, which made its debut on Broadway earlier this year, is nominated for a total of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (Harvey Fierstein), Best Original Score (Alan Menken, Jack Feldman), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Jeremy Jordan), Best Direction of a Musical (Jeff Calhoun), Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli), Best Orchestrations (Danny Troob) and Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Tobin Ost and Sven Ortel).
While it survived a near-hostile takeover from ‘Toy Story,’ Disney Creative Entertainment has now set its sights on the magnificent staged production of ‘Aladdin’ at Disney California Adventure’s Hyperion Theater (albeit more magnificent when the flying carpet scene isn’t deemed a safety hazard). And that, dear readers, brings us to speculate what will follow in Aladdin, Genie and Jasmine’s footsteps.
Disney’s limited Broadway run of its new musical ‘Newsies’ (based on the film) racked up an impressive eight Tony Award nominations including ‘Best Musical.’ The announcement was made earlier today by Kristin Chenoweth and Jim Parsons during the annual nominations ceremony.
For the coveted title of ‘Best Musical,’ ‘Newsies’ will be competing against ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It,’ ‘Once’ and ‘Leap of Faith,’ with the latter two also having been based on films. ‘Leap’ and ‘Newsies’ also share the music composition talents of Alan Menken.
The widely anticipated original Broadway cast recording for Disney’s ‘Newsies’ will be released digitally via iTunes on April 10 (now available for pre-order) and pre-orders shipping on CD beginning April 30, 2012. The CD will become available in stores at mass retail on May 15, 2012.
The iTunes digital edition includes 18 tracks plus a digital booklet for $10.99 while the $20 CD edition available for pre-order here includes bonus tracks featuring an acoustic version of ‘Santa Fe,’ and extended versions of ‘King of New York’ and ‘Seize the Day.’

Disney Theatrical has announced the full cast list for its upcoming Broadway theatrical debut of ‘Newsies,’ based on the cult-classic of the same title. As previously announced, Jeremy Jordan will return to reprise the role he originated, Jack Kelly. Also returning from the Paper Mill Playhouse production are John Dossett as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay as Katherine Plumber, Ben Fankhauser as Davey, Aaron J. Albano as ensemble, Mark Aldrich as Seitz/ensemble and Tommy Bracco as Spot Conlon. The full cast list can be found on the ‘Newsies’ official website.
We first talked about it way back in March of 2010, but today we have confirmation that Disney’s ‘Newsies’ from Disney Theatrical is in fact heading to Broadway in 2012 for a limited run. According to the official website, NEWSIESTHEMUSICAL.COM, the show will be playing at the Nederlander Theatre from March 15, 2012 through June 10, 2012. Tickets for the show will go on sale January 30, 2012 at 10 am.
Earlier this year, the show had a limited run at the Paper Mill Playhouse.
It’s been well over a year since we first mentioned that a staged adaptation of the Walt Disney Studios cult classic Newsies was on its way, but last week saw the first performance of the newly adapted musical at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey. The hosts of “The View” will introduce the world television premiere performance of the brand new Disney stage musical, “NEWSIES,” adapted from the popular Disney film starring Christian Bale, live, Monday, September 19 at 11 am ET on ABC. Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who wrote music for the 1992 motion picture Newsies and has won eight Oscars for such memorable scores as Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Pocahontas, is a featured guest and will help introduce the cast performance medley of both “Santa Fe” and “Seize The Day.” “NEWSIES” is presented by Paper Mill Playhouse.
