Get ready for classic arcade video game action with a whole new modern look and feel as Activision Publishing Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard Inc., (Nasdaq: ATVI) and Disney Interactive (NYSE:DIS) today announced a collaboration to produce and distribute a Wreck-It Ralph video game. As a story extension to the highly anticipated upcoming blockbuster film of the same name from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the Wreck-It Ralph video game is set to inspire a whole new generation of young gamers as a classic, arcade-style side scroller featuring Ralph – the misunderstood villain of his own arcade game who sets out to prove he can be a hero too. Debuting this fall tied to the movie release, Wreck-It Ralph will bring all the fun from the big screen right into the living room for the Wii system from Nintendo, and the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS hand-held systems.
“Wreck-It Ralph, as a brand entity, is perfectly suited for video game stardom,” said David Oxford, Executive Vice President, Activision Publishing. “With the fantastic characters and creative atmosphere envisioned by Walt Disney Animation Studios, we know fans are going to love seeing their newfound favorite characters embark on an all-new side scrolling adventure.”
The game picks up where the movie leaves off as Ralph partners with Fix-It Felix and sets out to save their friends and home from a huge Cy-Bug invasion. Pounding through all-new levels in the Wreck-It Ralph universe, like Sugar Rush, Hero’s Duty, and Fix-It Felix, Jr., players will have to use Ralph’s destructive strength to beat by the Cy-Bugs, while switching back to Felix to repair the damage. With story campaign and two-player co-op on the Wii platform, players can switch between Ralph and Felix to solve action-packed puzzles and collect “Hero Medals.”

‘Disney Universe is a vast treasure chest of Disney properties with memorable characters, places and experiences that gamers, as well as Disney fans will enjoy,’ said Adam Sussman, senior vice president of publishing, Disney Interactive Media Group. ‘The fast-paced, frenetic gameplay combined with wacky humor and hilarious situations make Disney Universe the perfect game to play with family and friends.’
Disney is not being loose with many of the game’s details yet, but has added that the different worlds that players can explore are not only inspired by, but follow the actual storylines of the selected Disney and Disney/Pixar films. Players will select a character-based costume, with each costume offering a specific tool that changes and grows in power as players adventure through the game. Disney Universe offers frenetic gameplay, multiplayer with up to three friends and slapstick humor that will appeal to players of all ages.
Disney Interactive has also announced plans to offer downloadable content (DLC) post-launch for the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming consoles in way of new character costumes and worlds. The game will also be available for the Wii platform and as downloadable content for the PC.
Disney has not announced an official release date as of yet, but Amazon.com is now listing the title with a release date of Halloween (October 31, 2011), a fitting date for a game whose primary talking point is wearing costumes.
Last week, we reported a brief appearance of a video game titled ‘Disney Universe’ that had made its way to Amazon.com but was removed shortly thereafter.
The game, with adaptations for the Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, boasts the ability for gamers to team up to play more than 40 popular characters from the Disney arsenal.
Expected to be announced at or shortly prior to E3 next week, Disney Interactive Studios has released the following teaser for the game, which it now confirms to be released later this year. The teaser features little blue characters in CosPlay format, portraying a character from TRON: Legacy, Mike Wazowski from Disney/Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., Alice from Alice in Wonderland and Stitch from Lilo and Stitch along with the tagline: ‘Suit Up. Power Up. Team Up.’
According to the original description for the game, it will include six worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar films where ‘mischief, magic and mayhem reign’ and allow up to four players to either combine their efforts to defeat enemies and solve puzzles, or work against each other too.
The teaser also points to the game’s homepage which does exist but currently only has the teaser video.
UPDATE #1: The UK site for the game offers a different background in addition to the teaser but also points to additional clues/content to be revealed at future dates, beginning May 26.
If you don’t, however, or if you know someone who doesn’t have it but should, today would be a good day to consider it as Amazon.com is listing it as a gold box deal, offering it for just $29.99 for today only, which represents a savings of 40% off the full retail cost of the game.
In celebration of the launch of Epic Mickey from Disney Interactive Studios and Junction Point Studios today, the newly opened Disney Store Times Square played host to an event of epic proportions. At the center of it all was gaming veteran and Junction Point creative director, visionary Warren Spector. Spector was joined by the rest of the development team as they realized the fruits of their labor for the past three years in Epic Mickey.
Also in attendance for the event were ‘Dancing With The Stars’ winner Jennifer Grey and co-star Kyle Massey who offered a meet and greet opportunity with guests who had purchased the game during the early morning event. As a bonus, purchasers of the game at its released each received an exclusive commemorative ‘e-ticket’ voucher as well as other giveaways including Epic Mickey t-shirts, posters and drawings by the game developers.
