85 AR 0184 106x160 Paperman Scores Oscar, Inspires Antics During and After WinTo virtually no one’s surprise, the revolutionary Paperman short from Walt Disney Animation Studios claimed the industry’s top honor for Short Film (Animated). Director John Kahrs (pictured, left) took to the stage to receive the accolades with a short, yet sincere speech.

Meanwhile, according to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Kristina Reed (also pictured, left) decided to celebrate the win by tossing kiss-accented paper planes into the audience from her seat in the mezzanine. Although none of the projectiles appeared to approach the stage, Reed was reportedly temporarily ejected from the Dolby Theatre, only to return a few minutes later after a ‘small protest.’

After exiting the stage, Kahrs — still fresh from his win — continued on to the press tent where winners entertained a few questions from the accredited press, chosen by lottery for each winner. It was here that Kahrs encountered actor David Arquette who received his credentials via the Howard Stern show on Sirius/XM satellite radio. Among several questions from other reporters actually relevant to the short (for which Kahrs remained humble and spoke highly of his fellow animators at the studio), Arquette contributed the following exchange:

DA: I’m an actor, David Arquette.

JK: I recognized you.

DA:I do lots of voices. I can do a low voice. I can do a high voice.

JK: This is my next step, actually, because I didn’t use any words so this is the thing I’m terrified of is actually putting voices in the animations.

DA: So put nice actors but, you know, because you have to stay in the room with them. But what are you most excited about in your Oscar gift basket?

JK: Actually, the Oscar gift basket was very modest.

DA: But there were condoms in there. If you don’t use them, I can use them, bro.

When he’s not hitting up Oscar winners for their loot, Arquette provides the voice of Skully, the parrot from Disney Junior’s ‘Jake and the Never Land Pirates’ which is produced by Disney Television Animation, located at the Walt Disney Studios, across the street from the Feature Animation building.

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ Dominates 40th Annual Annie Awards

Earlier this evening, The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, held its 40th Annual Annie Awards at UCLA’s Royce Hall, in Los Angeles, CA. While addressing the myriad of technical issues for the awards show were well beyond the capabilities of Fix-It Felix Jr and his magic hammer, the clear winner of the night was Wreck-It Ralph from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

The blockbuster took a total of five awards including Music in an Animated Feature Production (Henry Jackman, Skrillex, Adam Young, Matthew Thiessen, Jamie Houston, Yasushi Akimoto), Writing in an Animated Feature (Phil Johnston and Jennifer Lee), Voice Acting in an Animated Feature (Alan Tudyk as King Candy), Directing in an Animated Feature (Rich Moore) and Best Animated Feature.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ short Paperman, directed by John Kahrs, also took its category of Best Animated Short Subject. Disney/Pixar’s Brave also picked up a couple of awards for Editorial in an Animated Feature (Nicholas C. Smith, A.C.E., Robert Grahamjones, A.C.E., David Suther) and Production Design in an Animated Feature (Steve Pilcher). Kristen Schaal also took the honors for Voice Acting in an Animated Television Production for her role as Mabel Pines in ‘Gravity Falls.’

Lastly, Jerome Platteaux, John Sigurdson, Ryan Hopkins, Raul Essig and Mark Chataway of Industrial Light & Magic were recognized for Animated Effects in a Live Action Film for Marvel’s The Avengers.

Juried awards honoring career achievement and exceptional contributions to animation were also awarded to Disney animator Mark Henn, one of three recognized with the Winsor McCay award, as selected by the ASIFA-Hollywood Board of Directors, for his career contributions to the art of animation. Additionally, Disney publicist and documentarian Howard Green received the June Foray Award for his significant and benevolent or charitable impact on the art and industry of animation.

‘Paperman’ Now Available for Free Online Viewing

paperman 109x160 Paperman Now Available for Free Online ViewingWalt Disney Animation Studios has uploaded its Oscar-nominated short, Paperman to YouTube, allowing it to be watched online in its entirety for the first time.

Introducing a groundbreaking technique that seamlessly merges computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques, first-time director John Kahrs takes the art of animation in a bold new direction with Paperman. Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him. Created by a small, innovative team working at Walt Disney Animation Studios, Paperman pushes the animation medium in an exciting new direction.

‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ ‘Frankenweenie,’ ‘Brave,’ ‘Paperman,’ ‘Avengers,’ Get Oscar Noms; ‘Lincoln’ Leads Charge

Earlier this morning, awards show host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the nominations for the primary categories for the upcoming 85th annual Academy Awards at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Disney’s only nominations announced thus far — unsurprisingly — have been for Best Animated Feature Film in which Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Wreck-It Ralph, Pixar Animation Studio’s Brave were all nominated. Other films in the category are Laika’s Paranorman and Aardman Animation’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ other animated film, Paperman, was nominated for Best Short against Adam and Dog, Fresh Guacamole, Head over Heels and Maggie Simpson in ‘The Longest Daycare.’ Meanwhile, Marvel’s The Avengers was nominated for Achievement in Visual Effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White, Guy Williams and Dan Sudick).

Otherwise, the morning belonged to Lincoln, produced by Dreamworks but marketed and distributed by Walt Disney Studios. Lincoln wracked up twelve nominations including: Best Performance for Actor in a Supporting Role (Tommy Lee Jones), Best Performance for Actress in a Supporting Role (Sally Field), Adapted Screenplay (Tony Kushner), Best Achievement in Directing (Steven Spielberg), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Daniel Day-Lewis), Achievement in Cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), Achievement in Costume Design (Joanna Johnston), Achievement in Film Editing (Michael Kahn), Best Original Score (John Williams), Achievement in Production Design (Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Jim Erickson), Achievement in Sound Mixing (Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom and Ronald Judkins) and Best Picture, where it competes against Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Lining’s Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi and Amour.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Music From ‘Paperman,’ ‘The Circle Sessions’ and ‘Haunted Mansion’ on Digital Download

cds 153x160 Music From Paperman, The Circle Sessions and Haunted Mansion on Digital DownloadThere’s a definite odd-man-out in this trio of mentions, but as they all came up in one of our routine product reviews, all have the same release date and should all be on most everyone’s wish list this holiday season, here they are all presented as one beautiful-sounding package.

First up is a recent Disney Parks release, ‘The Circle Sessions: The Music of Carthay Circle Music From Paperman, The Circle Sessions and Haunted Mansion on Digital Download,’ which was released as a CD not all that long ago exclusively at Disney California Adventure. Already heralded as a must have, the digital album features twelve Disney classics with an all-new jazzy spin as heard at the Carthay Circle Restaurant on Buena Vista Street at the Disneyland Resort theme park.

The Haunted Mansion Music From Paperman, The Circle Sessions and Haunted Mansion on Digital Download‘ is another Disney Parks release based off of a physical CD previously exclusive to the parks. This beloved title features seven haunting tracks taken from the Disneyland classic attraction including the audio of the full ride-through.

Last, and certainly not least, is Cristophe Beck’s Paperman Music From Paperman, The Circle Sessions and Haunted Mansion on Digital Download from Walt Disney Animation Studios, as seen playing before Wreck-It Ralph earlier this year.

All three titles will be available for digital download from Amazon.com beginning December 18, 2012. Previews for the first two titles are currently available on their respective product pages.

Disney’s ‘For Your Consideration’ Site Features Scripts, Music and Images from Films

brave1 125x160 Disneys For Your Consideration Site Features Scripts, Music and Images from FilmsOver the past couple of months, Walt Disney Studios has been slowly ramping up its ‘For Your Consideration’ website (available at WaltDisneyStudiosAwards.com), dedicated to promoting various aspects of its films for consideration by the voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Oscar nominations/awards.

Although the site is still missing a few promised elements, such as the music from the Walt Disney Animation Studios short, Paperman, most of them are there, including an introductory video which introduces and goes behind the scenes of the promoted films: Frankenweenie, Brave, Wreck-It Ralph and Paperman.

The site also offers biographies of those involved in production, full songs from the films as well as the screenplays for Frankenweenie and Wreck-It Ralph.
