‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ ‘Frankenweenie,’ ‘Brave,’ ‘Paperman,’ ‘Avengers,’ Get Oscar Noms; ‘Lincoln’ Leads Charge
Earlier this morning, awards show host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the nominations for the primary categories for the upcoming 85th annual Academy Awards at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Disney’s only nominations announced thus far — unsurprisingly — have been for Best Animated Feature Film in which Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Wreck-It Ralph, Pixar Animation Studio’s Brave were all nominated. Other films in the category are Laika’s Paranorman and Aardman Animation’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ other animated film, Paperman, was nominated for Best Short against Adam and Dog, Fresh Guacamole, Head over Heels and Maggie Simpson in ‘The Longest Daycare.’ Meanwhile, Marvel’s The Avengers was nominated for Achievement in Visual Effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White, Guy Williams and Dan Sudick).
Otherwise, the morning belonged to Lincoln, produced by Dreamworks but marketed and distributed by Walt Disney Studios. Lincoln wracked up twelve nominations including: Best Performance for Actor in a Supporting Role (Tommy Lee Jones), Best Performance for Actress in a Supporting Role (Sally Field), Adapted Screenplay (Tony Kushner), Best Achievement in Directing (Steven Spielberg), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Daniel Day-Lewis), Achievement in Cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), Achievement in Costume Design (Joanna Johnston), Achievement in Film Editing (Michael Kahn), Best Original Score (John Williams), Achievement in Production Design (Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Jim Erickson), Achievement in Sound Mixing (Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom and Ronald Judkins) and Best Picture, where it competes against Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Lining’s Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi and Amour.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

‘Monsters University’ Viral Ad Promotes Campus Life, Website
Premiering during today’s Rose Bowl game, Walt Disney Studios and Pixar Animation Studios began its television campaign to promote the upcoming Monsters University prequel. The ad, which mocks traditional campus life-style advertisements, features students explaining why Monsters University is the right school for them. The ad finishes by promoting the viral website for the film, MonstersUniversity.com/edu, which launched last year.
The new ad even has its own page on the University’s website in which it is accompanied by an article about its production.
Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.
Screaming with laughter and fun, Monsters University stars the vocal talents of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray and Peter Sohn and is directed by Dan Scanlon and produced by Kori Rae. Monsters University opens in theaters nationwide on June 21, 2013.

Sneak Peek: Disneyland’s ‘Cars Land’ Float for 2013 Rose Parade
We are just under a week from the New Year and — with it — the 124th annual Rose Parade held on New Year’s Day in Pasadena, California. This year’s theme is taken from the Dr. Seuss classic, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and Disneyland Resort hopes to transport the parade’s millions of viewers to Cars Land, it’s newest addition at the Disney California Adventure theme park.
The Disney float, dubbed ‘Destination: Cars Land,’ showcases the landmarks of Cars Land in a colorful re-creation of the roadside town of Radiator Springs. Shaped like the state of California, the 125-foot long float — the longest in this year’s parade — features flowing water, smoke-puffing baby tractors and 45 animated parts, including replicas of Lightning McQueen and Sally as they relive their fun-spirited road race from the first Cars movie. Mater, the tow truck, follows along behind the float.
Here’s a breakdown of what viewers may spot aboard the 125-foot long, 35-foot tall float:
- At the front of the float, is a postcard-style ‘Welcome to Cars Land’ sign, flanked by a trio of baby tractors emitting puffs of smoke while their eyes move in a playful manner.
- Further ‘up the road’ are likenesses of Lightning McQueen and Sally, moving forward and backward as if jockeying for race position.
- The main buildings of Radiator Springs are marked by spinning signs for the town’s landmarks, including the Cozy Cone Motel and Flo’s V-8 Cafe.
- Guests aboard the float will ride vehicles from two Cars Land attractions: a tractor from Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree and a bouncing tire from Luigi’s Flying Tires.
- The iconic Radiator Springs mountain range, a Cars Land landmark, is re-created on the float, with characters Luigi and Guido perched on the rocks.
- The mountain range is home to a miniature version of the popular Radiator Springs Racers attraction, complete with small-scale race cars zooming across the landscape.
- High above everything, Barney Stormin’ the airplane tows a banner that reads: ‘The Happiest Place on Earth Just Got Happier.’
Via Twitter, volunteer @BigD923 recently shared some of the following images of the float as it is being assembled (in two parts) and decorated:
The parade steps off at 8 am PST on Tuesday, January 1, in Pasadena and will be broadcast live on ABC, Hallmark Channel, HGTV, KTLA (Tribune), NBC, RFD-TV and Univision. The Parade is also seen in more than 220 international territories and countries.

D23 Members Invited to ‘Disney Infinity’ Announcement in Hollywood
Disney D23, the official club for fans of The Walt Disney Company, has announced that it has secured a few coveted spots for the exclusive invite-only official reveal of Disney Interactive’s ‘Disney Infinity,’ to take place next month.
The event, which will take place at Disney’s historic El Capitan Theatre, will allow D23 members to be amongst the very first audience to actually experience ‘Disney Infinity,’ a game we have speculated will use popular characters from the world of Disney and Pixar in an Skylanders-type experience across multiple platforms in a way never before experienced.
In addition to the event, which features a presentation by John Lasseter, a lunch buffet will be offered, along with a special commemorative gift for those fortunate enough to attend.
The ‘Disney Infinity’ event takes place the day of January 15 in Hollywood. Tickets are free (plus a $5 service charge) and will be available beginning January 3, 2013 at 10 am PST. For more information and to reserve tickets as they become available, visit the official event page.

‘Monsters University’ Gear for Four-Armed Students Now Available
Just in time for the theatrical release of Monsters, Inc 3D featuring alumna from next year’s prequel, the Monsters University campus store is now stocking its popular 4-armed hoodie, just almost in time for the holiday season.
We first reported on the Monsters University merchandise some time before the viral site went — well, viral, but it’s seemed to go under the radar that despite a couple of items that appeared to be jokes, the site’s Campus Store is a fully-functioning shop filled with (mostly) real products and serviced by Disney Store.
At least we thought there were joke items. Apparently some of the items, which allow to choose a configuration for number of arms and collars (heads) have actually gone into production and one of them is now being offered. Options are still limited in terms of design/color/arm/head configuration, but it’s still a novelty gift sure to please any fan of the Monsters Inc. franchise (or the bizarre).
And remember: KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL.
