Earlier today, actress Penelope Cruz, who takes on the role of Blackbeard’s daughter, Angelica, in Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides (May 20, 2011) was honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce when she was awarded her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On hand to celebrate were co-star Johnny Depp, who referred to Cruz as ‘the Ricky to my Lucy,’ film producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Rob Marshall and Cruz’s husband, Javier Bardem.

An Academy Award® winner, Penelope Cruz has proven herself to be one of the most versatile actresses by playing a variety of compelling characters, and most recently, becoming the first actress from Spain to be nominated and to win an Oscar®.

First introduced to American audiences in the Spanish films Jamon, Jamon and Belle Epoque, in 1998 she starred in her first English language film, The Hi-Lo Country for director Stephen Frears opposite Woody Harrelson, Patricia Arquette and Billy Crudup. In 1999, Cruz won the Best Actress award at the 13th Annual Goya Awards given by the SpanishAcademy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for her role in Fernando Trueba’s The Girl of Your Dreams.

Confirming her status as an international actress, Cruz landed a series of coveted roles. She appeared in Billy Bob Thornton’s All the Pretty Horses, Fina Torres’ Woman on Top, Alejandro Amenabar’s Open Your Eyes, and Maria Ripoli’s Twice Upon a Yesterday.  Additionally, Cruz co-starred in Pedro Almodovar’s Live Flesh and the critically acclaimed All About My Mother, which was awarded the Golden Globe® and Oscar® for Best Foreign Film.

Next up for Cruz was a role opposite Pirates co-star Johnny Depp in Blow for director Ted Demme and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin opposite Nicolas Cage, followed by starring opposite Tom Cruise in Cameron Crowe’s thriller Vanilla Sky. She then tackled Masked & Anonymous, Fan Fan la Tulipe (which opened the 2003 Cannes Film Festival) and Don’t Tempt Me. She received rave reviews for her performance in Don’t Move (Non ti Muovere) in which she was honored with a David Di Donatello Award (Italian Oscar) and the European Film Award for Best Actress.

To add to her already diverse choice of film credits, she starred in films including Gothika, Head in the Clouds, and Sahara. In 2006, Cruz starred in Volver, which again teamed her with director and dear friend Pedro Almodovar. Critically-acclaimed for her role as Raimunda, she won the Best Actress awards at the European Film Awards, the Spanish Goya Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, and received both Golden Globe® and Oscar® nominations.

Her recent credits include Elegy opposite Sir Ben Kingsley and Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona opposite Javier Bardem and Scarlet Johansson. Cruz won an Oscar®, a BAFTA, a New York Film Critics Circle and a National Board of Review award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

In 2009, Cruz and Almodovar were back in action for the fourth time with Broken Embraces, for which she again received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Lena. Also that year, she teamed up with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall for the first time and starred alongside Daniel Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard in the film version of the musical Nine. Her standout portrayal of Carla garnered Screen Actors Guild®, Golden Globe® and Academy Award® nominations.  Her third Oscar® nomination made history as it marked only the third time in Oscar history where the winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress was nominated for the same award again in the following year.

Cruz is involved in the following charities: Worldwide (RED) campaign lead by Bono and Bobby Shiver,  Artists for Peace and Justice in Haiti (APJ), UNICEF The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). She had the honor of working with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity; volunteering in a leprosy clinic in India and she also worked with the Dalai Lama for the House of Tibet in Spain.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Ride History Podcast, New Video Game Trailer

Walt Disney Studios Netherlands provides us with a couple of gems today for Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides, in theaters nationwide on May 20, 2011.

First up is a podcast video hosted by Geoffrey Rush, focusing briefly on the history of the Disneyland attraction that inspired the franchise. In addition to the ride background, including a televised introduction to the attraction by Walt Disney (Pirates of the Caribbean was the last attraction that Walt personally worked on), the podcast also shows quite a bit of footage from the film plus behind-the-scenes footage which includes Johnny Depp (in full Captain Jack Sparrow makeup) making a grand entrance via helicopter. Because it comes from overseas, the podcast is subtitled, but is entirely in English (we will replace it with a non-subtitled version as it becomes available).

Next up is a new trailer for the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean video game from Disney Interactive Studios and TT Games. Composed of essentially all game footage (with the exception to some title games), it focuses on the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest portion of the game, which allows players to experience all four films in the franchise in LEGO form. So be on the lookout for plenty of LEGO Davy Jones and even a re-creation of the final scene involving the Kraken (with a little surprise).

The video game will be available on all gaming platforms including Nintendo 3DS.

In related news, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall have recently announced there will be a fifth film in the franchise and Depp is attached to reprise his role.

UPDATE #1 – 4/1/11 – Swapped out video game trailer with HD English version.

Hasbro Puts New Spin on Classic Board Games for Disney, ‘Cars 2,’ ‘Pirates,’ and More

Parker Brothers has been synonymous with classic board games beloved by families for generations. From Monopoly to Sorry! to Trouble to the (relative) new kid on the block, Trivial Pursuit, and more, no family game night is has been complete without at least one of them.

For Disney/Pixar’s Cars 2, however, at the 2011 New York International Toy Fair, parent company Hasbro is shifting into higher gear, offering expanded and improved gameplay on the classics, taking full advantage of the Pixar property’s theming. Unfortunately due to restrictions due to the sensitivity of details from the film not yet revealed, we are unable to share any photos at this time, but we will do our best to describe the enhanced gameplay involved. As it was, many of the graphics were covered as they pertained to unreleased details from the film.

First up is Monopoly. Gone is the traditional square-shaped gameboard as the new gameboard is shaped like a circle, taking the shape and form of a racetrack. The dice have been replaced by Lightning McQueen who is finger-flicked around the track to determine the number of spaces moved. When it debuts this spring, expect it to retail for around $19.99.

Next is Operation! As the Disney theme parks already have a Lightning McQueen edition (produced by Hasbro licensee USAopoly), it’s now Mater’s turn. Mater is suffering from all sorts of ailments such as a broken belt, (topical) bed bugs and even tow jam (yeah, we said it). Some of Mater’s conditions remained hidden as they relate directly with Cars 2 plot points, but we couldn’t help but note that where the gameboard itself was missing it, the box cover mentioned (wait for it) bad gas. Another thing that sets this edition of Operation apart is that the buzzer is replaced by actual recordings of Mater. It too should retail for $19.99. In addition, Basic Fun will be producing a portable keychain edition of the Cars 2 Mater Operation game which you can find pictured below (SPOILER WARNING).

Keeping with the racetrack theme, the popular Sorry! Sliders revamp has entered the world of Cars by turning the gameboard into a configurable racetrack. To help keep things moving along, ball bearings have even been added to the game’s tokens. Sorry! Sliders Cars 2 edition will retail for $24.99.

Even the ultra-simple game of Memory takes on a new angle when it becomes a virtual drag race between Lightning McQueen and Francesco Bernouli. The traditional element remains at the core as players try to match the hidden tiles, but now the matches go into the ‘grandstand’ display and the matched characters turn into spectators as each player moves their token along the strip. Memory Cars 2 edition will retail for $19.99.

Also in the mix is a Cars 2 edition of Pop-O-Matic Trouble in which Mater is the dice roller and a Cars 2 edition of the popular game Pictureka!

The other big news is that Hasbro will be releasing a new, family-friendly take on Trivial Pursuit called Disney Trivial Pursuit for All. Instead of six categories, the game has three different types of questions: multiple choices, second chances (which pair a Disney question with a non-Disney question) and (what appears to be) a how-well-do-you-know-me? For each correct answer, a player is awarded a wedge for their token, as is the case with the traditional version, however there is no requirement to get wedges for each ‘category.’ Look for Disney Trivial Pursuit for All this fall for about $29.99.

Finally, Hasbro will be releasing a Sorry! Phineas and Ferb edition this summer.

On a related note, Hasbro and fellow Disney licensee USAopoly will be contributing new editions of the classic boardgames themselves, starting with games for Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides. Continuing their collector’s editions of Yahtzee which replace the traditional dice cup with custo elements, the Pirates of the Caribbean edition will feature a ‘silver chalice cup’ for the dice rolling.

There will also be a brand new edition of Monopoly for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Previously, USAopoly had released a trilogy edition which combined elements from the first three films, but this new edition, which showcases Captain Jack Sparrow and Angelica in its central graphics, focuses only on the new film, with a whole new layout and property set on an absolutely beautiful gameboard.

USAopoly will also continue to expand their Nightmare Before Christmas offerings this year, starting with an Oogie Boogie edition which had previously been exclusive to Barnes & Noble and an Oogie edition of Operation, which like the Mater edition, uses soundbites from the Boogieman himself instead of a buzzer (and there are a LOT of them). Look for it in August.

Ian McShane Joins Disney in Reveal of LEGO Captain Jack Sparrow Life-Size Statue

John Myhre and Ian McShane check out the life-size LEGO Captain Jack Sparrow

Earlier this evening, Disney Consumer Products debuted new lines of toys from LEGO and JAKKS Pacific for this summer’s blockbuster, Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides. Highlights of the event included appearances by production designer John Myhre and Ian McShane who takes on the role of Blackbeard, the pirate all pirates fear.

As part of the event, Disney and LEGO unveiled a six foot tall ‘life-size’ statue of Captain Jack Sparrow, the first of its kind. The highly detailed statue, which includes a removable sword, consists of approximately 150,000 LEGO bricks and took more than 200 man hours to design and build. Approximately 70 of those hours alone were used in the creation of Jack’s head which was all done without the assistance of computers.

Also taking place during the event, Ian McShane was presented with his very own one-off custom Blackbeard transforming pirate which reveals the pirate’s curse when placed under blacklight. Production designer John Myhre, who talked at length about the fiery and skeletal details of the Queen Anne’s Revenge and Blackbeard himself, received a limited edition print of the ship from Acme Archives.

Attendees also got a preview of the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean video game after viewing the trailer for the film.

Below is our preliminary gallery of photos from the event. As always, click on any of the thumbnails to see a larger version.

We’ll be providing more details soon, but look for most of the products in Mid May. The JAKKS Pacific line of toys will come as early as March, exclusively at Toys R Us and Wal-mart.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will debut in theaters nationwide on May 20.
