LEGO announced today that come spring 2011, they will be launching an initial collection of rightbuilding sets based on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. This marks the fourth Disney film/franchise that LEGO will be producing products for since Disney terminated the licensing agreements with competitor MEGA Brands in early 2009. Since LEGO signed on, they have produced playsets for Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story, Jerry Bruckheimer’s Prince of Persia as well as DUPLO playsets for Cars with LEGO brand playsets for Cars due out in 2011. Prior to the licensing change, MEGA Brands did produce playsets based on the Pirates of the Caribbean series through the third film.
We have our first look at the teaser poster for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides from Walt Disney Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Productions. The news comes to us courtesy of IMPAwards.com who sourced it from movieposters.com, a poster retailer of all places. The poster does sport the May 20, 2011 release date as well as the traditional adorned pirate skull image that has graced teaser posters for the previous films, so it’s a reasonable likeness if nothing else.
TRON, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Muppets and Epic Mickey were the topics of discussion today during the Disney Publishing Worldwide panel at the 5th annual New York Comic-Con which kicked off today in New York City.
Briefly touching upon TRON, preview pages of the prequel graphic novel TRON: Betrayal and The Art of TRON: Legacy were shared. Since the titles themselves as well as many of the other TRON: Legacy titles (mostly geared towards tweens) were made available to browse through at the Disney Publishing Worldwide booth, there wasn’t much more needing to be mentioned on the topic.
Thinly veiled as a puff piece in which Walt Disney Studios marketing has opted to turn to a veteran consultant to handle the marketing for the fourth installment of the immensely popular Pirates of the Caribbean series, Kim Masters for The Hollywood Reporter has offered a rather scathing piece which hits WDS right where it counts — below the money belt.
Armada of the Damned is an entirely new experience within the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. The game takes place before the events of the blockbuster films. Players will take on the role of a pirate and embark on epic land and sea adventures. Numerous moral and character choices will need to be made that affect their character and the original story within the world. Players will explore a massive open world while fighting enemies, mystical creatures and Mother Nature, both to gain experience and stay alive. Supernatural elements familiar to the Pirates of the Caribbean world will also affect their character’s story and influence their choices.
It’s hard to say who’s the real pirate in this story, but as it recently came to my attention that the touring tall ship, the HMS Bounty II, is being touted as the Black Pearl in promotional material for its current stop in Newburgh, NY, I felt interested parties deserve a warning: the replica ship originally built for the Marlon Brando film Mutiny on the Bounty did sail in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies alright, but she never was, nor never shall be the Black Pearl.
