Nearly one-third of American children are either overweight or obese, according to recent reports. That’s why National PTA® and Jamie Oliver, renowned chef and TV personality, created a toolkit for parents and families that features easy-to-use information on nutrition and physical activity.

“National PTA is working to mobilize parents and families to end the nation’s growing childhood obesity epidemic. By giving them the resources they need, like this toolkit, we are empowering families to eat healthy foods and to be active together,” said Charles J. “Chuck” Saylors, National PTA President. “Now more than ever, it is important to act and provide solutions and tools for families to address this important issue.”

The toolkit is inspired by Oliver and comes on the heels of his new TV series, “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution,” which airs FRIDAYS (9:00-10:00 p.m.,ET) on the ABC Television Network. The toolkit includes family-friendly tips and techniques for parents and families on making small changes to eat healthier, shop smarter and be more physically active. The toolkit can be downloaded at PTA.org.

The partnership builds on PTA’s Healthy Lifestyles Grant Program that works to increase access and awareness of healthy foods, increase physical activity for families, provide healthier food in schools, and equip parents and families with the information they need to keep their child healthy and ready to learn. Since the inception of the program three years ago, PTA has awarded more than 100 grants that have impacted more than 67,000 students in 34 states across the country.

Jennie Garth and Family to Celebrate ‘School Year’s Eve’ August 30 at Disneyland

ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug. 28 — Actress Jennie Garth and her family will celebrate School Year’s Eve(TM) — a new national holiday developed by Cookie magazine and National PTA to mark the new school year — on Sunday, August 30th at Mickey’s Toontown at the Disneyland Resort in Southern California. Festivities to ring in the true “New Year” for families will kick off Sunday morning when Garth and her three school-age daughters will commemorate back-to-school alongside local students from Palm Lane Elementary.

As the Honorary Family, Garth and her daughters will be on hand to encourage students at interactive stations as they make School Year’s Resolutions. The event will culminate with a celebratory performance of the Mickey’s Morning Madness Show and a countdown to a School Year’s Eve(TM) “Apple Drop”.

The School Year’s Eve(TM) celebration at the Disneyland Resort will be echoed throughout the country on the eve of local school seasons starting, as Cookie and PTA encourage families to host their own parties in honor of the new national holiday to get kids and parents ready and excited about the start of the academic year.

“As families across the country work hard to prepare to head back to school, we’re encouraging families to also enjoy the moment and have fun. That’s why National PTA is excited to join Cookie to celebrate the new school year and provide another way for parents to get involved in their child’s education,” said Charles J. “Chuck” Saylors, National PTA President.

“Celebrating School Year’s Eve is a fun way to mark such a special time of year for families, and it gets kids and their parents ready and excited for the start of school. We are thrilled to have our partner the PTA join us as well as Jenny Garth and her family to kick off this year’s celebration at the Disneyland Resort,” Cookie Magazine’s Publisher Carolyn Kremins says.
