6774 160x120 img 3467 REPORT: Art of Frankenweenie Exhibit at San Diego Comic Con (Photos, Video) (Spoilers)

In anticipation of the stop-motion full-length remake of Tim Burton’s classic short, Frankenweenie, Walt Disney Studios has erected a mobile touring exhibit titled ‘The Art of Frankenweenie‘ which treats visitors to a rare, inside look at how the film was made. One of the first stops on the world tour is San Diego Comic-Con and we were invited by Walt Disney Studios to be one of the first to preview the exhibit which was hosted by film producers Don Hahn and Allison Abbate. Talent from the film, including Atticus Shaffer (of ABC’s ‘The Middle’ and voice of Edgar Gore) also passed through the exhibit to see the displays of props, puppets and concept art.

The exhibit is set up into four main sections. The first is titled Tim’s Desk and it takes the visitor inside the mind of film creator and director Tim Burton. It features many of Burton’s original sketches from which maquettes (also on display) were created. The exhibit, in fact, features several maquettes offering quite varied versions of Sparky, demonstrating his evolution into the character that will appear on the big screen. The display continues with other puppets and maquettes offering insight into the filmmaking process. One interesting thing to note is that whereas puppets in the past, such as Jack Skellington in Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas would have replacement heads for various vocal expressions, all of the puppets have one head design and the mouth is manually adjusted as needed (sometimes by using small screwdrivers inserted into the side of the puppet’s head as shown in some of the art on display). The exception to this is substitute biology teacher Mr. Rzykrus who does have alternate physical mouths as it appeared truer to the character himself.

The remainder of the exhibit focuses on the puppets and key sets used in the film, such as the classroom set, the kitchen set of the Frankenstein home and the Frankenstein attic. The kitchen set also features a separate display of an array of miniature props that had to be created in order to create a realistic universe for the film. Through the meticulously created props as well as set dressing featured in the sets themselves, one truly gets the sense of the amount of dedication that went into producing the film in all disciplines involved in film production. To that, the attic set also features a level of interactivity which allows visitors to turn various lights on and off at the flip of a switch.

There are several hints to more of the story to be found throughout the display however. While the latest trailer hints at Victor’s secret of bringing beloved Sparky back to life being leaked and others following suit, there are a range of new ‘pets’ on display including a were-rat (which merchandising hints belonging to Edgar) and vampire cat, presumably an alternate form of Mr. Whiskers which, according to the headline of the newspaper Mr. Frankenstein is reading, is a mysterious cat found in a postbox and ends up in the hands of Weird Girl. Visitors will also see the giant creature (whose puppet is actually the same size of the rest in reality) that will eventually wreak havoc on the small town of New Holland on its annual Dutch Day event.

Other interesting tidbits picked up from the experience include how the film (as stills) was shot with digital SLR cameras such as the Canon 5D, using a wide array of lenses to produce the desired effect. Hahn also talked about how technology has influenced creating stop-motion films, for example rods can be freely inserted into the backs of puppets, providing support so they can be shot in any position (including mid-air) and digitally removed in the post-production process.

Also on display is a healthy dose of upcoming merchandise based on the film which includes clothing by Mighty Fine Tees and accessories by High Intencity, vinyl figures by Disney Store (including a series of Popcorn Vinylmation) and Medicom, plush by The Bridge and Medicom, Apple iPhone cases and chargers by PDP Mobile and more.

Below is our gallery of photos and video from the exhibit as well as the merchandise on display. Click on any of the thumbnails below to see a larger version.

‘The Art of Frankenweenie‘ exhibit can be viewed at San Diego Comic-Con at booth 3635 for the duration of the show before it moves on to other locations such as the Disneyland Resort. Because of high demand and tight space, timed ‘hall passes’ are being distributed at the booth in order to visit it. Frankenweenie is also featured as part of the Walt Disney Studios panel in Hall H later today along with Oz the Great and Powerful and Walt Disney Animation’s Wreck-It Ralph.

Sneak Peek: ‘TRON: Uprising’ Series Coming to Disney XD, 2012

tron uprising 85176022 160x54 Sneak Peek: TRON: Uprising Series Coming to Disney XD, 2012Disney XD has released the video montage previewed for attendees at its San Diego Comic-Con panel. The video features quite a bit of concept art, models, test animation and what appears to be actual animation from the upcoming midquel, which takes place between TRON and TRON: Legacy.

Set to debut in summer 2012, the series centers around Beck, a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. His mission is to free his home and friends from the reign of the villainous Clu 2 and his henchman General Tesler. Beck will be trained by Tron – the greatest warrior the Grid has ever known. Tron will not only teach Beck the fighting skills he needs to challenge this brutal military occupation, but will be a guide and mentor to him as he grows beyond his youthful, impulsive nature into a courageous, powerful leader. Destined to become the new protector of the system, Beck adopts Tron’s persona and becomes the archenemy of Tesler and his oppressive forces.

According to multiple reports, it was mentioned that the series itself with be preceded by a series of 10 shorts, each 3 minutes in length. No mention of the Disney Channel Original Movie that we are anticipating was mentioned, but it could be that there either is no movie to speak of, or there is even more information on TRON: Uprising waiting to be officially released, which one could reasonably expect to occur during Disney’s own D23 Expo, taking place August 19-21 in Anaheim, CA.

Voice talents attached to the series include Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Lance Henriksen and Bruce Boxleitner as TRON. The series is anticipated to air on Disney XD beginning summer 2012.

Disneyland Resort’s ‘World of Color’ Kicks off California Tour July 7 in San Francisco

Viewers around the world will join a one-of-a-kind, online phenomenon in July to experience the extraordinary magic of “World of Color,” the new after-dark spectacular presented nightly in Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim. The interactive tour will feature live shows in four California cities, and the online audience will travel “virtually” to each location to watch the shows and interact with the webcast.

In each city, specially produced animation will be projected onto a familiar city landmark, using a sensational mixture of special effects, high-tech projections and one of the storytelling themes presented in “World of Color.”

The public is invited to participate online only at the “World of Color” Road Show website (www.WorldofColorRoadShow.com), where viewers will enjoy a rich experience that includes Disney animation and music, video entertainment and a “viewer’s choice” opportunity to vote for the starring color in that evening’s show. Each city will have a broadcast location designed for media only.

This “online spectacular” is inspired by the dazzling “World of Color” show, which combines music, animation, water and a multitude of special effects in a magical celebration of Disney characters and storytelling. A new venture for the Disneyland Resort, the tour will utilize streaming online video to bring its own special magic to the World Wide Web and to iconic locations in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego and Los Angeles. Each locale will deliver a different, amazing show.

ONLINE EXPERIENCE: Viewers will be able to access the webcast performances live and on encore nights at the website, in English at www.WorldofColorRoadShow.com and in Spanish at www.coloresdisney.com. The site also features an artistic video mashup, interviews with the creators of “World of Color” and the voting option. Video clips from each iconic location will be added to the show on ensuing nights, inspiring viewers to follow the virtual tour throughout California.

CAST YOUR VOTE: Just as fairies cast their spells, online viewers will cast their votes each night for one of three colors representing each of the Three Good Fairies from “Sleeping Beauty” – Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. The color with the most votes will be featured in the show’s opening moment, complete with a trail of pixie dust. In true Disney style, the winning fairy will fly from computer screens to the landmark location and she will conjure the magical transformation of the landmark using the chosen color – red, green or blue. With this bit of magic, online audience members are able to lend their own spark of inspiration to the show.

SHOW THEMES: A different theme will come alive in each of the four cities, with each show reflecting a theme from the “World of Color” production at Disney California Adventure. To experience the show in each city, people will have to visit the website. There will be no accommodations on site in each city.

SAN FRANCISCO: In San Francisco, the unique animation will be projected onto the façade of a landmark that will be revealed online on Opening Night. The presentation is dedicated to the theme of “Love,” featuring romantic couples from Disney and Disney – Pixar animated films. The live show, presented Wednesday and Thursday, July 7 and 8, will repeat continuously from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Pacific time and will be shot from several different angles for the ongoing, live webcast. Encore webcasts (not live) of the San Francisco show will appear online from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 9 through 11.

SACRAMENTO: With forest and garden scenes from such films as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Pocahontas,” “Bambi” and “Alice in Wonderland,” the online experience in Sacramento will be built around the theme of “Nature.” Presented Thursday through Sunday, July 15-18, in historic Old Sacramento, it will be webcast live from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. each evening.

SAN DIEGO: The next stop will be San Diego where, appropriately enough, “Water” will be the theme of the interactive experience, featuring scenes from “The Little Mermaid,” “Finding Nemo” and others projected onto the U.S.S. Midway Museum at Navy Pier. The San Diego webcasts will be live from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, July 22-25.

LOS ANGELES: The final shows of the online tour will be projected onto the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles Thursday and Friday, July 29 and 30. The theme will be “Sky,” illustrated by scenes from such films as “Aladdin” and “Fantasia.” As before, the live online presentation will be repeated continuously from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Encore performances (not live) will be webcast from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, July 31 and August 1.

Disney Announces ‘TRON: Legacy’ Plans for 2010 San Diego Comic-Con

Returning for an unprecedented third year to the fans and Convention that “started it all,” Walt Disney Pictures is pleased to present a very special, insider look at its upcoming “TRON: Legacy” at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International Convention. At 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2010, the panel presentation will be held in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. On the dais will be filmmakers and talent from the film, including director Joe Kosinski, producer Sean Bailey and cast members Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen and Bruce Boxleitner. The panel discussion, to be moderated by Patton Oswalt, is set to include exclusive glimpses of the film, as well as a Q & A involving all panel participants, along with special surprise guests.

It was at the 2008 Convention that the vision of a 21st century TRON was born. When VFX test footage was shown to a packed hall of incredibly surprised convention attendees, it was met with such an overwhelmingly positive response—becoming the “it” moment of the Convention—that the studio gave the film an enthusiastic green light. In 2009 “TRON: Legacy” returned to Comic-Con with an expanded presence and this year, the filmmakers and cast are back with never before seen visuals and “scoop” for the Convention fans who have been such an instrumental part of the story of “TRON: Legacy.”

Director Joe Kosinski comments: “When we made the teaser, we envisioned it as a sneak peak at the potential of this project. We set out to stay true to the characters, the vehicles, and the world established in the first film—then show its evolution. When it took off with the fans, we knew we were in the right place. Because they’ve been key to getting this story told, we’re back to keep them involved, and excited to finally present actual footage from the film to the audience that made it all possible.”

To add to the excitement of this extraordinary event, Disney will showcase an interactive TRON booth on the convention floor (located on aisle #3712), giving fans a first look at the all new “TRON: Legacy” inspired merchandise launching this fall. Capturing the action, light, and cool aesthetic style of the film, the display will include toys, electronics, collectibles, apparel, accessories, publishing and the “TRON: Evolution” video game from Disney Interactive Studios. Comic-Con exclusive products will also be on sale. Disney will also reveal exciting new mobile content at the event.
