The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released its shortlist of contenders for Achievement in Visual Effects (VFX) last night and a third of them are films by Walt Disney Studios and Marvel Studios, although they’re definitely up against some tough competition. Selected for consideration are: Alice in Wonderland, Iron Man 2, Price of Persia: The Sands of Time, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and TRON: Legacy.

The current list of 15 will be narrowed down to seven in early January by members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee who had selected the initial list. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration. The 83rd Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network.

New ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ Clip: ‘You Should Run’

On this, the eve of the release of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Walt Disney Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer, Disney has released the following clip from the film they’ve aptly titled ‘You should run.’

In the clip, Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) and his apprentice Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) have journeyed to New York City’s Chinatown on a quest to find the Grimhold which has been missing for the past ten years. Unfortunately they find that the Grimhold has already fallen into the hands of Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina) who has just released Sun Lok (Gregory Woo) from his wooden prison. Dragons and hilarity ensue (with a ton of amazing f/x).

Photo Gallery: ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ World Premiere and Concert in Bryant Park

Sorcerer Mickey Mouse,Nicolas Cage On what reportedly turned out to be the hottest day in New York City in more than thirty years, the cast and crew of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Walt Disney Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Films (not to mention yours truly) braved the sun to celebrate the world premiere of the film earlier this week.

The event kicked off at the beginning of the carpet where New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, along with the film’s talent and the original Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Mickey Mouse, gathered to declare July 6 as Sorcerer’s Apprentice Day throughout the city. Then the stars began parading down the red and shadeless carpet to the New Amsterdam Theatre, where the screening was to be held. Unfortunately due to carpet position and the sun’s unwilligness to forgive, many of the invitees would eventually break away from the carpet and dash inside, so the opportunities for one poor Disney blogger were rare.

To that end, there were a couple of standouts. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer eventually made his way down the carpet, paying his regards to the press. Star and executive producer Nicolas Cage, however, was truly exceptional, not only responding to all, but answering questions at length, all the while waving to his adoring fans who were staked out across 42nd Street or simply driving by.

It was also very difficult not to be captivated by the lovely Teresa Palmer, who portrays love-interest Becky Barnes. Although one would never know it from her performances, Teresa is an Aussie and has a very heavy (but charming) accent to prove it. The children from the film — Jake Cherry, Peyton List and Robert Capron were also delightful.

After the screening of the movie, the night’s festivities moved on to Bryant Park where the stars of the film along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turtletaub conducted a brief Q&A session at an event open to all. Although One Republic — whose hit song Secrets is featured in the film – was expected to perform during the mini-concert, cited health reasons kept lead singer Ryan Tedder at bay. Instead, Hollywood Records recording artist Alpha Rev doubled-up on their performance, treating the crowd to an impressive show consisting of about six or seven songs.

Epilogue: I really ought to be a concert photographer.

‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ Conjures Up Motion Comic, New Clip: ‘Sorcery 101′

With just less than a week before the nationwide release of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Walt Disney Studios has offered up this motion comic which offers to take you on a journey of hundreds of years in just three and a half minutes. If you can forgive the terrible and melodramatic Nicolas Cage impression, the ‘South Park’-inspired power-walking and the fact that Balthazar Blake (a sorcerer to the 777th degree mind you) has to rely on children to protect him with their magic instead of using his own, it’s a bit more backstory to the film.

Walt Disney Studios has also released the following clip titled ‘Sorcery 101′  in which Balthazar (Cage) teaches his new apprentice Dave (Jay Baruchel) about the physics of magic.

New ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ Clip – The Eagle Has Landed

Walt Disney Studios has released a new clip from its upcoming film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. In the clip, Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) arrives just in time, swooping in aboard his Chrysler Building steel eagle to save apprentice Jay (Jay Baruchel) from Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). The clip, which takes place at a NYC subway station features the wolves we told you about in a previous article. In that article, you can also find a link to a photo gallery from the sanctuary where the wolves live that shows a bunch of behind-the-scenes photos from the film shoot.

We’ll be covering the red carpet of the world premiere later today, so be sure to follow us on twitter and check in later for a first-hand report and many photos from the day’s events.

First Look: ‘Secrets’ Music Video for ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,’ New Promos

OneRepublic’s smash hit Secrets is prominently featured in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Studios Russia has offered up this cut of the popular music video which replaces the non-performance segments with clips from the upcoming movie. Interestingly enough, the scene where Balthazar Blake’s (Nicolas Cage) car flips through a mirror and exits into the streets of a reversed-New York was flipped in the video, so everything appears to be normal (the scene where older Dave first encounters Balthazar is also flipped, although that’s less of a plot point).

On July 6, OneRepublic will be teaming up with Alpha Rev to offer a free outdoor mini-concert in New York City’s Bryant Park in celebration of the world premiere of the film as well as Mayor Bloomberg’s declaration of July 6 as ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice Day’ in New York City. The concert is expected to begin around 8:15 pm.

In another promotional video, this one released by Walt Disney Studios New Zealand, we not only get to see the relationship between Balthazar and his apprentice Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) but the video also goes on to explore Dave’s relationship with Becky Barnes (Teresa Palmer) and even features a tiny clip from when the two are children (although we have seen young Dave before, this is the first time we’ve seen young Becky).

Extended Five-Minute Clip from ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice:’ Dave’s First Lesson

Yahoo! Movies has unveiled this five-minute extended clip from the beginning of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Walt Disney Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer.

In the clip, young Dave Stutler (Jake Cherry) meets his future mentor Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) for the first time, at Blake’s shop, the Arcana Cabana. While Balthazar goes to dig out homework for his young apprentice, curious Dave stumbles upon the Grimhold, a prison for the most evil and dangerous of sorcerers. The first sorcerer to be released from the Grimhold is Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina), a centuries-old rival of Balthazar in more ways than one…

Sorcerer’s Apprentice: Dozens of New Hi-Res Stills, Movie Surfers and the Experience

In case you couldn’t tell, we’re pretty darn excited about The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Walt Disney Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer. We’re just a few days away from the world premiere and the publicity is stepping up accordingly.

Disney Channel recently released this Movie Surfers segment in which the Surfers meet up with Jay Baruchel who talks about impressing his mom by saving the world, learning valuable lessons and providing sage advice: if you’re going to go on a quest to save the world, use the restroom first. A small amount of new footage in this segment very much directed at its demographic.
