‘Star Tours: The Adventures Continue’ at Tokyo Disneyland to Open May 2013
‘May the 7th be with you,’ is probably something you won’t be hearing a lot of next year, but just a few days after The Walt Disney Company announced its intentions to acquire Lucasfilm to produce new Star Wars films, the Tokyo Disney Resort has announced it will hold its grand opening for ‘Star Tours: The Adventures Continue’ on May 7, 2013 — just a few days after ‘Star Wars Day’ on May the 4th.
At a price tag just north of US $87 million, the updated attraction brings the same 3D randomized experience to Tokyo Disneyland as it has already done for both Disneyland in Anaheim, California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
‘Star Tours: The Adventures Continue’ is just one more reason the Tokyo Disney Resort will just get happier as it begins celebrating ‘The Happiness Year’ in April 2013, commemorating its 30th anniversary. The attraction will offer FASTPASS and will have a height restriction of 41″ (105 cm) and an age minimum of 3.

‘Star Tours 2.0′ to Launch at Tokyo Disneyland in 2013
Oriental Land Company, owner and operator of Tokyo Disneyland, has announced that it will be following in the footsteps of the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts and will be updating its ‘Star Tours’ attraction in Tomorrowland. With an estimated cost of 7 billion yen (approximately $91 million US), ‘Star Tours: The Adventure Continues’ is expected to open in spring 2013.
From the initial announcement, it does not appear that the attraction will differ from that of the recent makeover at the Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park. Just yesterday, the attraction redo was recognized by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and will receive a Thea Award for its refresh.
‘Star Tours’ opened at the Tokyo Disneyland Resort in July of 1989. It will close April 2, 2012 to receive the upgrade.

Disneyland’s ‘Soundsational Summer’ — Behind the Music
Since Mickey Mouse first whistled his way into entertainment history in “Steamboat Willie” (the first animated cartoon with synchronized sound), music has been one of the cornerstones of Disney enchantment, from movies and television to recordings and, of course, Theme Parks. And since magnificent music is one of the most magical forces behind the spectacular experiences you’ll enjoy during Disney Soundsational Summer at the Disneyland Resort, Disneyland asked three experts, who specialize in this artistry, to share some insider views.
Wondrous waves of oceanic octaves
Now, Disney California Adventure Park is the place to experience one of the most elaborate ride-through attractions ever inspired by a Walt Disney Pictures animated feature: The Little Mermaid~Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. And as you voyage through this fantastic world — seeing the story unfold before your eyes in a blend of Audio-Animatronics® wizardry and special effects in the tradition of some of the most beloved Disney Parks attractions — the songs of multiple Academy Award® winners Alan Menken and Howard Ashman will be with you all the way.
“To create the music for the attraction, we brought in the multitalented Danny Troob, who is a long-time collaborator with Alan Menken as the orchestrator on the animated film versions of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, as well as ‘The Little Mermaid’ on Broadway,” said John Dennis, Director, Music Production, Walt Disney Imagineering. “We worked with Danny to combine elements from the original feature film soundtrack to create a seamless music experience for the attraction.”
So, what you’ll hear is the voice of Ariel, Jodi Benson, singing “Part of Your World,” and the voice of Ursula, Pat Carroll, singing “Poor Unfortunate Souls” as you heard them in the film, woven into new music that flows from scene to scene in the attraction.
When the directors of the landmark Walt Disney Pictures animated film, The Little Mermaid, recently experienced The Little Mermaid~Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, they were thrilled. As John recalled, “They said that it was really wonderful to see that, after 20-plus years, Ariel actually got her own dedicated attraction!”
Some of the most magnificent music in the galaxy
Now at Disneyland Park, Star Tours: The Adventures Continue blasts you into all-new interstellar voyages throughout a galaxy “far, far away.” But while the attraction will take you to destinations unknown, from core systems to the Outer Rim, the Star Wars” experience wouldn’t be complete without the iconic musical score by multiple Academy Award®-winning composer, John Williams.
“John came to Walt Disney Imagineering and we told him what our plans were,” recalled John Dennis. “He said, ‘Great! How can I help?’ He was really terrific to us. We were planning to record completely new versions of his Star Wars” themes. He said, ‘You know, we’ve got some 15 hours of music that was recorded for the feature films. I think we can find enough music in the film scores to use in the attraction.’”
After several weeks of music editorial, that is exactly what happened. John and his music editor worked closely with Walt Disney Imagineering to create the music track you’ll hear in the “main show” portion of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. In fact, Williams’ music is so central to the Star Wars” experience, you’ll enjoy his iconic themes throughout your journey through the entire Star Tours: The Adventures Continue attraction.
Star Tours:The Adventures Continue will be a feast for all the senses. But the ears will have the especially delightful treat of hearing so much of John Williams’ memorable music — those rousing, exciting themes we associate with so many favorite Star Wars characters and how we thrilled to their fantastic adventures.
A glorious procession of Disney delights
A new kind of musical approach now literally “floats” down Main Street, U.S.A. now that Mickey’s Soundsational Parade made its Disneyland Park premiere last month.
“They’re all classic Disney songs,” said John Addis, Senior Show Director, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment. “Plus, there’s a new ‘Soundsational’ theme written by Mark Hammond, who also did all the arrangements for the parade.”
Every float has its own color palette and musical style, from Mickey doing a “friendly drum competition” to a new version of “Mickey Mouse March” to Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie and Abu appearing in an “Arabian Nights meets Bollywood” float with such tunes as “Friend Like Me” and “Prince Ali.” The princess float features “I See the Light” from Tangled; a New Orleans riverboat celebrates Dixieland jazz and Cajun zydeco in songs like “Almost There” and “Dig a Little Deeper” from The Princess and the Frog; and much more.
Music, color and magic on the water
“Mark Hammond arranged our World of Color music,” said John, referring to the Disney California Adventure spectacle — in which fountains, animation, pyrotechnics and effects fuse into unforgettable sights and sounds. “We produced the soundtrack in London with a 100-piece orchestra at the famous Abbey Road studio. The music came out exceedingly well, with a lot of fanciful musical themes to support the visuals in the show.
“It has its roots in the theme from Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color that the Sherman Brothers wrote for the Sunday night television series. The song was given a fresh, new sound that sets the whole show up.
“There are some fantastic visual elements in World of Color with technology that most people have never seen,” said John. “There are nearly 400-foot-long walls of fountains with gigantic projections. The music needs to be just as expansive and it really steps up to all that impact and scope.”
Rounding out all this Disney Soundsational Summer enchantment is a nighttime fireworks extravaganza so magical that it’s called simply that: Magical, A Fireworks Spectacular.
As a Disney veteran, Bruce Healy, Senior Music Director and Producer, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment, told us that this extravaganza was “truly another labor of love.” The first act is all about the magic of childhood, based on Walt Disney Pictures’ Peter Pan. The next act is the magic of a wish based on Walt Disney Pictures’ Pinocchio. Another is the magic of a mother’s love, so beautifully presented in Walt Disney Pictures’ Dumbo. And the last act celebrates the magic of a kiss, inspired by Disney Princesses.
“The score is sung by Eden Espinosa, who played Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway,” said Bruce. “She is especially dear to our hearts, since she used to be one of our Disneyland Park performers! Eden sings the Magical theme.” Some of the other songs are “Give a Little Whistle,” “Heigh-Ho” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” — which is one of our biggest moments, because the fireworks seem to do a big ‘kick line’ in the sky.
“I think my favorite moment features one of my all-time favorite songs from a Walt Disney Pictures film, ‘Baby Mine.’ Not only does Tinker Bell fly over Sleeping Beauty Castle, but Dumbo does, tooand there really is not a dry eye in the house.”
Clearly, Magical, A Fireworks Spectacular is more than just a fireworks show. But then, this won’t be just another summer if you visit Disneyland Resort and enjoy all the wonders that await. You just may find yourself using the only word that seems to encompass all the dazzling experiences…”Soundsational!”

Star Wars Creator George Lucas and Disney’s Bob Iger Launch Star Tours Attraction at Walt Disney World
Star WarsTM creator George Lucas and Disney President and CEO Bob Iger wielded lightsabers amid a legion of stormtroopers Friday to open “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue,” a new 3-D adventure at Walt Disney World Resort.
A cast of hundreds of Star Wars characters and performers – including Anthony Daniels, who has played the golden droid C-3PO since the first film debuted in 1977 – converged on Disney’s Hollywood Studios for the launch of the attraction destined to send millions of guests on virtual journeys throughout the Star Wars galaxy.
Fittingly, the launch of Star Tours anchored the opening day of Star Wars Weekends, a popular event in the park celebrating the Star Wars legacy with special shows, presentations, motorcades and memorabilia. Star Wars Weekends continue each Friday-Sunday now through June 12, 2011.
And on June 3, 2011, “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” will open at Disneyland Resort in California.
“Star Tours immerses guests into the Star Wars universe like never before,” Iger said. “The innovative technology and storytelling take guests on thrilling new adventures, bringing George Lucas’ iconic characters and locations to life in a completely new way.”
With eye-popping digital video leveraging Dolby 3-D to deliver a vivid and realistic visual experience, a dramatic musical score and motion simulator-based technology, guests are immersed in a Star Wars adventure like never before on a theme park attraction. Walt Disney Imagineering worked with Lucasfilm, Ltd. and Industrial Light & Magic – the groundbreaking visual effects division of Lucasfilm – to bring the out-of-this-world attraction to life.
Star Tours, which had thrilled Disney guests since the 1980s, was “powered down” in 2010 so Disney’s Imagineers could begin work on the new attraction.
In “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue,” there are more than 50 story combinations, so guests can find new adventures each time they experience the attraction.
Utilizing the random story combinations, the Starspeeder spacecraft embarks on a wild adventure, visiting several planets made famous in the Star Wars films. Among the locations that might provide haven from the Empire’s pursuit are the icy planet of Hoth, the lush jungles of Kashyyyk and the underwater Gungan world on Naboo.
And along the way guests may encounter Star Wars characters that offer to help (or hinder) their journey, including Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, Darth Vader and Boba Fett. “Skytroopers,” a legion of stormtroopers created just for the Star Tours attraction story, might even join in the chase.
In fact, guests will never know where the Force will take them. Flights are now departing during regular operating hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

EXCLUSIVE: Inside the New ‘Star Tours’ at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Major Spoilers)
In honor of Star Wars Day (May the 4th), our spies with the Rebel Alliance have checked in with us regarding some strange goings-on over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort. Apparently there is some new company calling itself ‘Star Tours’ which promises to take travelers on a trip around the universe. Reports are still preliminary at this stage, but apparently the Empire is pleased with the changes that will soon affect us all, perhaps in some ways we shall never even know about.
It begins with the costume uniform worn by cast members employees of the Star Tours organization. Are we at a Disney theme park or in a galaxy far, far away? Yes. Although new signage outside the attraction have a Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme to them and there are still indications that there is a movie set in the ‘Star Tours: The Adventures Continue’ area according to a recent photo update by StarTours2Live.com, we are assured by our spy that references to soundstages and hot sets will no longer apply in the world of the Star Tours travel company, at least once you step inside the show building terminal.
In fact, the line is being so blurred between the world of fantasy and — well, fantasy, that we are told that Walt Disney Imagineering has been instructing cast members that when posted outside the attraction, they are part of a theme park and should act with such knowledge, but once inside the attraction, there effectively is no Walt Disney World, straight down to standing orders to disregard the infamous ‘Disney Point.’
For those who don’t already know, the ‘Disney Point’ is so named because cast members are trained to never point with one finger when directing guests, lest another guest feel that they are being pointed at and consider it rude. So rather than a random guest being irritated that they have a stranger pointing a finger at them, they will be pleased that they have two fingers pointed at them. In any case, more power to the Star Tours agent who can turn it on and off at will.
Now where was I? Oh yes. Star Tours. Our spies report that, as feared, Star Tours is currently operating at half capacity with three out of six Starspeeder 1000s operating, which has fueled speculation that guests will be in for long waits when the attraction makes its debut on May 20. Unfortunately, however, our spies report that operations is only part of the issue and that the queues still require a lot of work, but only because Imagineering is set on making this a truly immersive Star Wars experience.
Upon entering the terminal, guests will see the brand spankin’ new Starspeeder 1000 in top form. A brand new rear-projection screen will showcase commercials for the Star Tours agency (with music composed by Michael Giacchino) as well as show information on arrivals (green) and departures (red) in both English and Aurebesh. A ‘live cam’ will also showcase the activity of the busy starport for the amusement of those waiting on queue to depart to destinations unknown. Guests are advised to keep an eye on the screen as they never know which ship from the Star Wars universe will arrive/depart next — will it be the Millennium Falcon? or perhaps Queen Amidala’s ship? One just never knows.
Guests are then invited to proceed further into the queue and kindly asked to ignore the babbling of one RX-24 droid who keeps insisting it will be a Star Tours pilot someday (Sure, and the Death Star will one day be destroyed! Keep dreaming!).
We’ve had enough fun with the gags and inside jokes though, so it’s time to direct our attention to something taken far more seriously at Star Tours — safety. A droid will scan all bags with an xray scanner to remove all threats. This is serious stuff too. What may resemble a funny looking hat with two big round discs attached to it to you, is really huge security threat and must be destroyed. This is the only way that we can ensure the safe delivery of other guests’ items such as that funny looking musical instrument of Chewbacca’s that sort-of resembles a bowcaster.
Amused by the bag scans? Hopefully not because you’re next!
Once guests make it through security, they are assigned to a row for the Starspeeder 1000 aircraft and handed their touring glasses. Our spies report rumors that these glasses, equipped for Dolby Digital 3D technology, took Disney for about $9 a pop with a total near cost of a cool million for the glasses alone. A video then explains the sudden appearance of additional droids on the ship, namely C-3PO and R2-D2.
Passengers then board the Starspeeder 1000 which looks an awful lot like the Starspeeder 3000 of the future, only LED lighting offers some added effects. After a brief pre-flight check and instruction from the Star Tours gate agent (as well as some Disney magic), the doors of the Starspeeder 1000 close and this is where our report ends and the journey begins.
Special thanks to our Rebel Alliance spies who continue with their infiltration at the Star Tours travel company. It’s thanks to your help and dedication that we will continue to make inroads to bring an end to the Empire as we know it once and for all. Fortunately, they will never suspect our spies are amongst them.
