The LEGO SUPER HEROES Marvel collection will spotlight three Marvel franchises – Marvel’s The Avengers movie, and X-Men and Spider-Man classic characters. The LEGO Marvel’s The Avengers movie line brings such ever popular Marvel characters as Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Loki and Black Widow to LEGO minifigure form. The LEGO X-Men collection includes minifigure comic versions of Wolverine, Magneto, Nick Fury and Deadpool, while the LEGO Spider-Man sets offer minifigure comic versions of Spider-Man, and Doctor Octopus. The first buildable characters in the LEGO SUPER HEROES collection are highlighted by Captain America, The Hulk and Iron Man. Select figures will be unveiled in the LEGO booth (#2829) during Comic-Con International at the San Diego Convention Center July 21-24.

Can you smellllllllllll what the Disney publicity machine is cookin’? The actor formerly known as The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, is working overtime to promote the release of Race to Witch Mountain this Friday. After hosting FOX’s Animation Domination last week, Johnson did double duty this weekend, hosting both Saturday Night Live as well as a Disney marathon of films on Starz Sunday night. And he has not yet begun to promote.

This week you’ll find him on Live With Regis and Kelly and BET’s 106 & Park on Monday, The Tonight Show on Thursday and CBS’s The Early Show, Ellen Degeneres and Jimmy Kimmel on Friday. Wednesday is his day off (it’s also the night of the premiere at the El Capitan).

You’ll also find his some of his co-stars working the boob tube as well. Carla Gugino will appear on Ellen Degeneres on Tuesday and Bonnie Hunt will host Garry Marshall on Wednesday and both AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig on Friday.

The event, which is part of The Soap Nation Tour, will be held on Tuesday, March 10 from 9-11am and 11-1pm on the set of ABC’s “The View,” at 320 West 66th street. There will be a minimum $10.00 cash preferred donation per person, with all proceeds will benefit BC/EFA. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as autographs are limited. Actors’ headshots will be provided.

Tickets will be provided per series and per timeslot. At check-in participants will be asked to choose which series and which timeslot they’d like to attend. They will then be given a ticket to get autographs from the stars scheduled in that session. Ticket holders for the 11am show may leave and return by 10:15am. Doors open at 8am. There are a limited number of tickets per show, so we ask fans to arrive early.

Since Disney acquired 80 percent of ESPN in 1995 the most-watched U.S. sports channel has become one of the company’s most valuable properties, providing $4.1 billion in operating income in fiscal 2008 ending September 27, the newspaper said.

However, ESPN is feeling the impact of the recession and its advertising revenue is declining even as costs associated with many of its rights deals increase on schedule, the paper said.

ESPN’s NFL payments nearly doubled from $600 million during the last round of negotiations, and each of its other major rights fees rose by at least 20 percent, a trend most industry people expect to continue, it said.

ESPN spends about $2.2 billion annually for the broadcast rights to major sports in the U.S. alone, the paper said.

Walt Disney could not immediately be reached by Reuters for comment.

In a statement, the anti-trust body said it rejected the venture after it was given false information by the parties applying to create Mo-Tv Holdings Ltd, which Russia’s Interfax news agency identified as the Disney project, citing sources close to the deal.

A Disney corporate representative could not be reached immediately for comment.

The ruling is a setback to Disney’s aggressive efforts since Chief Executive Robert Iger took over in 2005 to move into the Russian and Eastern European markets, which had been expected to buck the global economic downturn and offset slower growth in the company’s more established markets.

Disney had been counting on the free-to-air television channel to raise brand awareness and support the local retail, theatrical distribution, licensing, mobile and Internet businesses it already operates in Russia — a strategy it has employed successfully in China and India.

Disney announced plans in December to take a 49 percent stake in a Russian joint venture with Media-One Holdings Ltd, pledging to provide the channel with cash and programming, as well as marketing expertise.

Under Russia’s strict laws governing the airwaves, foreign investors must have a local partner, and Media-One was to hold a 51 percent stake in the nationwide venture.

“The information and documents presented did not have all of the information necessary to make a decision with regard to statute 33 — On protecting competition,” the agency said in a statement.

“Moreover, the documents, presented to the Federal Anti-Monopoly Service of Russia included false information,” it added in explanation of the move.

The agency’s statement said it was blocking the acquisition of a 49 percent stake in Mo-Tv Holdings Ltd by Catalpa Investments Ltd, which Interfax news agency reported to be a unit of Walt Disney. (Reporting by Simon Shuster in Moscow and Gina Keating in Los Angeles; Editing by Andrew Macdonald)

One of the final panels at the 2009 New York Comic Con was this panel featuring cast & crew of the upcoming Disney XD keystone show. Moderated by Jermaine Turner, head of development for Disney XD, the panel began first with a clip promoting the new channel which debuts next Friday. According to the promo, Aaron Stone will be joined by other programs such as: new series like Kid vs Kat and Jimmy Two Shoes; classic Disney Channel shows such as Even Stevens, Phil of the Future, the Suite Life of Zack and Cody; and new episodes of Phineas and Ferb.

The promo was promptly followed by a screening of both parts of Hero Rising, the series premiere. Turner advised that this was the first time the two-part episode was being shown to anyone outside the company, but this was half-right (if anything) since the first episode had been available to download for free from iTunes for a week (and most recently had been offered for download on the Xbox).

As you may imagine, I had already watched the first episode when it became available a week ago. I have to admit I was hesitant at first because I knew it would be hard enough for me to watch it (or most anything) a second time during the panel, but I was also afraid that I’d find it absolutely deplorable and impossible to digest so it lingered in the back of my mind that I really might not want to sit through it again. I’m pleased to say my fears were unfounded and I absolutely ended up looking forward to watching the episode again, especially in conjunction with the second half of the premiere.

For the uninitiated, Aaron Stone revolves around a high schooler named Charlie Landers who spends most of his free time playing a MMO (that’s short for massively multiplayer online role-playing game, such as World of Warcraft) called Hero Rising (to promote the series/channel launch, a Hero Rising website was created). In the MMO, billed as ‘not just a game,’ Charlie has risen to the position of top player with his character (avatar) known as Aaron Stone. The reality is that Hero Rising is a cover for a training program for a top secret organization led by the game’s creator, Hall Industries. When the bad guys known as the Omega Defiance eliminate one of the good guys, Hall has no choice but to recruit his best player against
