Ahead of any formal announcements, Amazon.com has begun taking pre-orders for Julie Taymor’s The Tempest from Disney’s Touchstone Pictures on DVD

Photo Gallery: ‘The Tempest’ North American Premiere at New York Film Festival
This past weekend, the 48th Annual New York Film Festival honored director’s Julie Taymore’s spin on the Shakespeare classic by making The Tempest the Centerpiece of the festival. The first of the two screenings on Saturday night also managed to double as the North American premiere of the film. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the second screening, introduced by Julie Taymor. Noting The Tempest was celebrating its 400th anniversary, Taymor reflected on her experiences with the Shakespearean play dating back to directing a staged version of the play some time ago. Despite the material’s origins and mostly native British cast, she also quipped it was an American film as it had been filmed on the Hawaiian island of Lana’i, a place she had once vacationed at and decided then and there ‘it was The Tempest.’ It’s also worth noting that portions of the film were also filmed in New York soundstages in addition to Hawaii.

In addition to leading actors Helen Mirren (Prospera), Felicity Jones (Miranda), Reeve Carney (Ferdinand), Tom Conti (Gonzalo), Russell Brand (Trinculo) and Ben Whishaw (Ariel), the premiere was also attended by the cast of the upcoming Broadway production of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark which casts Carney in the lead role and is being directed by Julie Taymor.

New Hi-Res Still from Julie Taymor’s ‘The Tempest’ Features Helen Mirren, Felicity Jones and Djimon Hounsou
On the heels of the hi-res poster for The Tempest, which we brought to you yesterday, Miramax Films and Walt Disney Studios has also provided to us this still from the film which features Helen Mirren, Felicity Jones and Djimon Hounsou. In her big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s mystical thriller The Tempest, Academy Award®–nominated Julie Taymor (“Across the Universe,” “Frida,” “Titus”) brings an original dynamic to the story by changing the gender of the sorcerer Prospero into the sorceress Prospera, portrayed by Oscar® winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen”). Prospera’s journey spirals through vengeance to forgiveness as she reigns over a magical island, cares for her young daughter, Miranda, and unleashes her powers against shipwrecked enemies in this exciting, masterly mix of romance, tragicomedy and the supernatural. First Look: Helen Mirren, Russell Brand and Alfred Molina in Taymor’s ‘The Tempest’; New Stills from ‘Secretariat,’ ‘The Debt’

Also from Miramax Films is the spy thriller remake The Debt also starring Helen Mirren. In The Debt (rated R by the MPAA for some violence and language), Rachel Singer (Helen Mirren) is one of three Israeli Mossad agents who were sent on a secret mission to capture a notorious Nazi war criminal in 1960’s East Berlin. Now, decades later, she must go back undercover and risk everything once again. Our new stills feature the younger version of the agents, Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington and Marton Csokas. The Debt opens nationwide on December 29.

Last, but certainly not least, is a new still of Diane Lane in Walt Disney’s Oscar-worthy Secretariat which also stars John Malkovich. Based on the remarkable true story, Secretariat chronicles the spectacular journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Housewife and mother Penny Chenery (Lane) agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. Against all odds, Chenery—with the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (Malkovich)—manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be the greatest racehorse of all time.

Julie Taymor’s ‘The Tempest’ to Open Nationwide December 17; Limited Release December 10
From Miramax Films comes The Tempest directed and adapted for the screen by Julie Taymor who last directed the Beatles’ music-filled Across the Universe and created and directed the Disney Theatrical adaptation of The Lion King on Broadway. The film — which stars Helen Mirren, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, Reeve Carney, Felicity Jones and Tom Conti — is adapted from the William Shakespeare play and will open in limited release in New York and Los Angeles on December 10, 2017, followed by a wide release on December 17. This will be Taymor’s second adaptation of a Shakespeare play, the first being Titus (based on ‘Titus Andronicus’).
