Designer Mychael Darwin — best known for creating one-of-a-kind limited edition leather jackets — and Disney Consumer Products are launching an all new outerwear collection in honor of Disney’s newest and first African American Princess, Tiana. Arriving in time for the Holiday ‘09 release of Walt Disney Pictures’ new animated film The Princess and the Frog, the collection is inspired by the warm textures and bright colors of the hand drawn animation of this highly anticipated animated film and will appeal to both the fashion conscious and the Disney devotee.
When asked about his design inspiration for the collection, Mychael Darwin said, “I drew from my own Southern upbringing, the richness of the film’s country landscapes and the beauty and grace from my own true life princess — my daughter. It was also important to me that I create a line that appeals to the inner desire of all women to be treated like royalty, specifically as they work hard to achieve their dreams.”
Mychael Darwin Denim & Leather for Disney for women, tweens and girls consists of limited edition Italian all-leather jackets with hand-carved .925 sterling silver buttons, featuring custom-printed leather with beautifully artistic background scenes reminiscent of The Princess and the Frog. The leather jacket collection uses a revolutionary proprietary printing technique known as Leathergenix©—which allows extraordinary artistic printing on supple leather. The collection also includes special edition premium denim jackets accented with Italian leather trims and jacket backs that feature original artwork from the film elegantly highlighted with hand-beaded Swarovski crystals.

The first in a new line of paintings from Thomas Kinkade titled ‘Disney Discoveries,’ this painting inspired by Disney’s The Princess and the Frog is soon to make its debut. While the film represents quite a few firsts for Disney, it also represents some firsts for Kinkade as well. Below the image is Kinkade’s description of the painting from his blog.
From Kinkade’s blog:
In The Princess and the Frog, my first painting for a Disney new release, the characters of the movie swirl about the composition, inviting us to ponder the part each plays in the story. We see the large mansion of Big Daddy, resplendent with an evening’s party on the bayou. The old riverboat churns its way into the bay as a flight of fireflies flickers overhead, and Ray, the senior statesman of the fireflies, ponders the vista. In an example of the blended time frame for which my Disney paintings are known, we see Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen being observed by the frogs who are Tiana and Naveen in a different form. In the billowing smoke of the riverboat we see a hint of Facilier, the evil voodoo master, while below Mama Odie stands guard in her swampy home. Lewis [sic], the trumpet playing alligator, reminds us that New Orleans is at heart a musical city, and the riverboat guests behind him wave greeting to one and all. If you look carefully, you can spot other characters from the movie hidden around the composition, as well as a few unexpected “Disney visitors” from earlier classics.
Walt Disney’s newest animated feature, The Princess and the Frog (opening nationwide December 11), celebrates the music of New Orleans with big jazzy numbers and an unforgettable score composed by the Academy Award winning Randy Newman.
Featuring performances by New Orleans’ own Dr. John, the film’s Anika Noni Rose, Jim Cummings, Keith David, Michael Leon-Wooley, and Jenifer Lewis, with performances on trumpet by Terence Blanchard as well as multi-Grammy Award winner Ne-Yo, this is one album you’ll definitely want to get your hands on when it’s released on November 23.
We are thrilled to announce that our friends at Walt Disney Records have joined us in celebrating the release of the soundtrack and film by offering five lucky Stitch Kingdom fans their own copy of the soundtrack autographed by the soundtrack’s composer, music legend Randy Newman!

GLENDALE, CA — November 17, 2009 — Weeks before the theatrical release of Disney’s upcoming animated feature The Princess and the Frog, the excitement for film-inspired merchandise is already building in a big way as anticipation for the film intensifies. Since its launch just a few weeks ago, the merchandise has already begun out-selling other Disney Princess items by double digit percentages. At Disney Store locations nationwide and DisneyStore.com, the Princess Tiana Halloween costume and role-play dress were best sellers. At major retailers, top sellers include The Princess and the Frog-inspired dolls, play sets and books. The Princess and the Frog toys have also captured industry praise as the Princess Tiana doll tops FunFare magazine’s “Holiday Hot Dozen” list and the Toys”R”Us “Fabulous 15″ Holiday list.
The Princess and the Frog introduces Disney’s newest princess character in more than ten years and the first African-American Disney princess. The product line from Disney Consumer Products (DCP) is supporting the film with a wide range of products spanning toys, fashion, home décor, food, personal care, beauty, stationery, books and an assortment for adults including collectibles, art, bridal wear and couture fashion.
“It is typical with any major Disney film to see movie-inspired product available as early as six weeks prior to the film’s release, and the same is true for The Princess and the Frog,” stated Mary Beech, vice president franchise development and marketing for Disney Consumer Products. “However, the historic release of The Princess and the Frog film has generated tremendous consumer excitement well in advance of the film – and sales thus far have exceeded projections, something that is remarkable for characters that fans are not yet completely familiar with.”
Couldn’t wait to share these gorgeous hi-res images of Tiana, Naveen, Dr. Facilier, Louis and Mama Odie (and Juju) from The Princess and the Frog.
