Report: Free ‘Inside the Lion King’ Exhibit Opens in New York for Limited Time

Inside the Lion King - Giraffes, Zazu, Ostriches

On November 13, 1997, Disney brought the staged, musical adaptation of its animated smash, The Lion King, to Broadway. Fifteen years later, it is now the the fifth longest-running musical in Broadway history, contains to sell out nightly and consistently has one of the top box-office intakes out of the dozens of theatrical offerings on Broadway alone.

As a thank you to the tens of millions of theater-goers who have seen the show as well as the millions more who will, Disney Theatrical has produced a free, time-limited exhibit appropriately titled ‘Inside The Lion King.’ Located at the corner of 42nd St and Sixth Ave in Manhattan, the exhibit gives visitors unprecedented access to not only ‘The Lion King,’ but the entire theatrical process. From concept design to modeling and mock-ups to fully realized costumes, the exhibit virtually makes the visitor part of the backstage experience itself. Here, photography is not only allowed, but encouraged, as is the ability to touch the costumes themselves and explore how they are constructed.

The individual displays are arranged around the exhibition by logical groupings as evidenced by the free exhibition ‘guide map’ handed out. Although the map has sections laid out in a circle, life appears to be more of a square. The map also encourages photos in particular with the Rafiki and Scar wax figures (on loan from Madam Tussauds) along with the adult Simba costume, but the truth is every step along the way is a virtual photo-op here, in particular with Zazu and Bertha, the elephant.

As guests travel around the exhibition, they’ll encounter several exhibition staff members willing to share information and enthusiasm about the musical. One of the several facts I personally heard over and over was that it takes four performers to operate Bertha [the elephant] — that’s one in each leg. In addition to the staff, there are two interactive touch-screen operated kiosks located towards the exit which offer up a wealth of information about the show across several categories.

While costumes and other artifacts make up the perimeter of the exhibit, the center portion of the room is dedicated to show merchandise — it is Disney after all. Virtually every item that can be purchased while attending the show is available to purchase here, though to be honest, the items are available through limited online channels as well. In either case, it’s a far broader offering than the limited theatrical merchandise one would find at the Disney Store in Times Square, making this a great place for a last-minute holiday gift or Christmas tree ornament. There is, however, one exclusive tshirt for the exhibit itself, offered only here. On a confusing side note, purchases seem to show up on statements as ‘Sister Act merchandise.’ From what I am told there are no discounts beyond Disney Cast Member, but there is a purchase with purchase offer: a reusable ‘The Lion King’ tote for $5 with any purchase. That said, it might be worth checking in towards the close of the exhibition just to be sure on any of the 2012. Another reason to stop by the exhibition is that tickets to the shows’ performances are being sold at the exhibit’s exit.

The exhibition will also play host to several workshops geared towards children aged six and up. For more information and for the current schedule, you can visit the official exhibition page.

‘Inside the Lion King’ is open daily from now through December 16 from 10 am – 8 pm, with limited hours on December 3 for private events. Admission is free.

Below is our gallery of images from the exhibit which represent a sample of what’s available to see hands-on, along with a video showing some of the highlights.

Timon and Pumbaa can do only so much to protect her, especially when she encounters an intriguing rival, Kovu, a cub who is being groomed to lead Scar’s pride.

As Kiara and Kovu search for their proper places in the great ‘Circle Of Life,’ they discover that it may be their destiny to reunite their prides and bring peace to the Pride Lands.

From their uniquely hysterical perspective, Timon and his windy pal Pumbaa — the greatest unsung heroes of the savanna — reveal where they came from, how they helped Simba save the Serengeti and what really happened behind the scenes of The Lion King’s biggest events.

This essential chapter of The Lion King trilogy features your favorite characters voiced by the original cast (Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Ernie Sabella plus Julie Kavner and Jerry Stiller) and music by Elton John and Tim Rice. You’ll feel the love for every outrageously funny moment.

‘The Lion King’ – Does This 3D Conversion Process Make Me Look Flat?

I still remember the day when I had first learned that Walt Disney Studios had been planning a theatrical release for a new 3D conversion of Beauty and the Beast, one of my absolute most favorite films to date — I was literally even sharing the news with virtual strangers on the streets of New York. Unfortunately it first got postponed (reportedly due to not being ready for its release date) and then removed from the slate completely until it was announced early this year that it would be available on 3D Blu-ray. Despite this, the film has had limited releases abroad such as in New Zealand and Australia, where it appeared to be well received and reviewed.

That said, having seen the first four minutes of The Lion King 3D as attached to Cars 2 3D in select theaters, I began to understand why many are reporting being underwhelmed at the end result. And while my personal opinion on the matter teeters on both sides (enough so, that I’m not willing to commit until I see the entire film in 3D, which I will in August at the Disney D23 Expo), I thought it worth looking into the whys of it all.

But before I go any further, a disclaimer: I am not qualified to make a definitive explanation on any level outside of being someone who’s seen a portion of the film and acquiring a very basic understanding of the process as it’s been occurring over the past few years. In other words, I am lower than a layman on this totem pole, so I gladly welcome any constructive input on the matter).

Transforming a traditional live-action (or stop motion as is the case with Nightmare Before Christmas) isn’t revolutionary anymore, and in some cases is even preferred, as Tim Burton decided to do with Alice in Wonderland, but traditional animation is a bit different, especially in the case of Walt Disney Studios where, believe it or not, the conversion for The Lion King was already done back in 1994, before the film was even released.

Before we can look at the technique used with Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King (among with a few others), however, we must look at how traditional hand-drawn animation is done. I’m sure most of you are already aware of this, but it bears repeating for the sake of where I’m going. In traditional animation, images are drawn on sheets of celluloid, more commonly known as cells. These cells, in turn, comprise of many layers which, when laid on top of each other, compose a single frame of the animation. The benefit with the cells is that instead of having to draw the same background over and over, as one would have to do if it was all on one sheet, the background can be used consistently as characters and other objects can be manipulated on sheets above it. This is why if you ever look a sales of animation cells, they’re almost always just bits and pieces from the animated film they come from (unless the background is replicated, for aesthetic purposes).

Walt Disney himself even took advantage of this traditional method when he and Ub Iwerks created the multi-plane camera for The Old Mill and subsequent films. Placing each layer of cells on different planes so that their distance from each other can be manipulated, instead of literally being flat, produced an effect of depth of field and allowed for a unique visual element.

Moving forward to 1991 (although technically it was earlier for that, used on other projects), what Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King did that set them apart from most of the other animated films is that the different cell layers were imported separately into Disney’s CAPS (Computer Animation Production System). This means that each layer could effectively be manipulated in a third dimension, very much like what the multi-plane camera did, paving the way to move into three-dimensional space.

So basically when you are watching The Lion King 3D, it becomes apparent that what you’re really watching is no different than what you’d get if you physically took each of the cells and held them in front of you, manipulating the space between the foreground and background with your hands.

This is, of course, only one of the many components, that when combined, give the lack of a three-dimensional effect, despite clearly being able perceive depth between the layers. Other contributing factors appear to be that the images are too sharp and colors are too solid – there’s no shading or lighting that one sees in the real world (even if it’s not readily perceived) and have come to expect in computer-generated animated films (and in live action, of course, is unavoidable). The other major factor that I can determine is that there doesn’t seem to be any use of depth of field and the effects it has on focus. Normally an object in the foreground doesn’t have the same depth of field as the background – one would be sharp while the other blurry, but in this case, everything appears to be in focus, which is contradictory to the purpose.

So when it comes right down to it, the end effect appears to be nothing more than paper cut outs placed apart from each other. The 3D is perceived, but it’s not what moviegoers have come to expect, so it can easily be construed as disappointing if one doesn’t quite know what to expect.

Mufasa Becomes Spokes-lion for Responsible Fatherhood Campaign

Lion King Fatherhood Ad Council AdWalt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has partnered with the the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Administration for Children and Families, Office of Family Assistance and the Ad Council for the the Responsible Fatherhood program, which helps promote the cause of fathers being involved in their children’s lives. This represents the second time the Walt Disney Company has partnered with the campaign which began in 2008, the first being a joint effort with ESPN in 2009.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimated 24 million children (34%) in the U.S. live apart from their fathers. The PSA campaign is an effort to show fathers the unique and irreplaceable role they play in their children’s lives.

“The President has said there is no more important job he or any other man can have than being a father,” said Joshua DuBois, Special Assistant to the President and Executive Director of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. “We are excited to promote fatherhood through this year’s media campaign as we all work toward addressing the crisis of father absence in our communities.”

According to the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (NRFC), children who live without their biological fathers are on average at least two to three times more likely to experience educational, health, emotional and behavioral problems, to be victims of child abuse and to engage in criminal behavior than their peers who live with their married, biological (or adoptive) parents.

Whether they live together or just see each other occasionally, research shows kids benefit greatly when their fathers are actively involved in their lives. The Responsible Fatherhood campaign urges fathers to be proactive and not wait for their children to ask them to read them a book, play a game, or sit down together for a meal — but take the lead. Spending time with your children can energize the relationship and create a stronger bond between a father and child.

“This Sunday we celebrate fathers nationwide, including those men who are serving in the military,” said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. “By launching this campaign in advance of Father’s Day, we strongly believe these touching PSAs will inspire fathers throughout the year to take the time to be involved in their children’s lives.”

All of the PSAs direct fathers to visit the campaign website, www.fatherhood.gov, or call 1-877-4DAD411 for fatherhood programs, resources and a series of downloadable “Take Time Tips” that are fun and budget friendly, including:

  • Create small moments that bring big rewards – Go for a walk, read a story, cook dinner, play a video game or board game, color a picture, or do a crossword puzzle with your child. These everyday activities are easy, affordable and can spark conversation, laughter and lasting memories.
  • Be a digital dad – Send your child a text message for no reason at all, other than to say, “I love you,” or “Great job on the test.”
  • Come and get it – Eat meals with your children. Breakfast, lunch and dinner create an opportunity to give your child your full attention. It’s a time to share news about your lives, have discussions and make plans for your family.

This year’s campaign also includes a second series of PSAs that were developed in collaboration with The Walt Disney Studios. The new television, radio, outdoor and digital ads feature the lovable animated characters from the movie The Lion King. The PSAs illustrate the important role fathers play in their children’s lives and ask fathers to play a part in “the circle of life.”

The Circle of Life takes on a new dimension as Simba, Mufasa, Nala, Timon and Pumbaa grace the screen once again, this time in breathtaking 3D. Beginning Sept. 16, a special two-week theatrical extravaganza will showcase the Oscar®- and Golden Globe®-winning film on the big screen in Disney Digital 3D™ for the first time ever, followed up by the home entertainment debut Oct. 4, celebrating the Diamond Edition release of the epic movie “The Lion King” in high-definition Blu-ray™ and Blu-ray 3D™.

Released in 1994, “The Lion King” remains one of the most successful animated films of all time. The classic tale of the African savanna wowed audiences worldwide with spectacular hand-drawn animation along with inspiring songs by Sir Elton John and Tim Rice, plus an evocative score by renowned composer Hans Zimmer. Three years later, the landmark film was adapted into a Tony Award®-winning musical, becoming an instant hit on Broadway, where earlier this year it became the seventh longest-running show ever. Winning over 70 major awards, it has delighted more than 55 million theatergoers around the globe.
