Julie Taymor’s ‘The Tempest’ Blows in on Disney DVD September 13
Ahead of any formal announcements, Amazon.com has begun taking pre-orders for Julie Taymor’s The Tempest from Disney’s Touchstone Pictures on DVD with a noted release date of June 7, 2011 September 13, 2011. Amazon has also listed a Blu-ray
edition for the film, but no release date has been specified as of yet, nor have any details specific to either release. Because Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has been experimenting with releasing DVD editions days or weeks after the Blu-ray editions, the only fairly safe assumption at this time is that the Blu-ray edition should be available by June 7 at the latest.
Bonus features for the DVD edition are set to include:
- Mr. Trinculo – A nickname for his love of trinkets and sparkles…Russell Brand holds court for Julie Taymor & Alfred Molina as he riffs on the jester’s path from the mundane to royalty (by talent) in this raw rehearsal footage.
- An Interview with Shakespeare – Julie Taymor interviews Russell Brand as William Shakespeare.
- What’s Past is Prologue: Making Julie Taymor’s Radical New Tempest: A look into acclaimed director Julie Taymor’s radical re-imagination of Shakespeare’s final masterpiece. This bonus will explore the stories behind the making of the film including: shooting where no film has ever shot before on Hawaii’s remote island of Lanai; the revolutionary approach composer Elliot Goldenthal took with Shakespeare’s most musical play; and the costume and design choices which have brought Shakespeare’s LOST to life.
- Audio Commentary with Director Julie Taymor
- Annotated Shakespeare – An educational audio commentary with renowned Shakespeare experts Virginia Vaughan, Clark University English Professor and/or Jonathan Bate, University of Warwick Shakespeare & Renaissance Literature Professor.
We will update this article as additional information becomes available.

‘Gnomeo & Juliet’ Clips: ‘Balcony’ and ‘Delicate’
Disney’s Touchstone Pictures has recently released two new clips from its upcoming release Gnomeo & Juliet, starring James McAvoy and Emily Blunt in the lead roles.
Directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2) and showcasing both classic and original songs by Elton John, the film features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet, who have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. But with plastic pink flamingos and thrilling lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness?
In the first clip, titled ‘Balcony,’ Juliet and Gnomeo offer their take on the classic scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
In the following clip titled ‘Delicate,’ Juliet receives a reprimanding from her father, Lord Redbrick (voiced by Michael Caine) who insists on putting her (literally) on a pedestal. The scene also features Nanette (voiced by Ashley Jensen).
Gnomeo & Juliet opens in theaters nationwide on February 11, 2011.

Report: Miramax’s ‘The Debt’ and ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’ Will Not Be Released by Disney
At the 2009 D23 Expo, it was announced that Hollywood neo-legend Guillermo del Toro would be teaming up with Walt Disney Studios to form a new shingle, Disney’s Double Dare You with the first project to be Trollhunters. Despite the announcement at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con that del Toro would be charging a remake of the studio blemish The Haunted Mansion, staying truer to the original attraction (which doesn’t use the definite article), it was also recently announced that Trollhunters would be going to Disney arch-nemesis DreamWorks Animation.
What to become of del Toro-produced remake of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark after it too received its own panel at San Diego Comic-Con? Initially slated to be released January 21, 2011, it was initially reported by Deadline Hollywood and then the LA Times that it will no longer be distributed by Disney and thus will be held in limbo until Miramax future owner Filmyard Holdings finds a new distributor for it. According to the Times, del Toro ‘was devastated by the news.’ In addition to DBAOTD, the also-remake The Debt will receive the same fate.
Disney will be releasing Julie Taymor’s take on Shakespeare’s The Tempest on December 17. According to that film’s title credits, it’s a joint production between Miramax and Disney’s Touchstone Pictures. Gnomeo and Juliet which will be released in February was also initially going to be released under the Miramax banner and was said to be included in the sale of the film production and distribution company but recently debuted its trailer featuring only the Touchstone moniker.

Photo Gallery: ‘The Tempest’ North American Premiere at New York Film Festival
This past weekend, the 48th Annual New York Film Festival honored director’s Julie Taymore’s spin on the Shakespeare classic by making The Tempest the Centerpiece of the festival. The first of the two screenings on Saturday night also managed to double as the North American premiere of the film. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the second screening, introduced by Julie Taymor. Noting The Tempest was celebrating its 400th anniversary, Taymor reflected on her experiences with the Shakespearean play dating back to directing a staged version of the play some time ago. Despite the material’s origins and mostly native British cast, she also quipped it was an American film as it had been filmed on the Hawaiian island of Lana’i, a place she had once vacationed at and decided then and there ‘it was The Tempest.’ It’s also worth noting that portions of the film were also filmed in New York soundstages in addition to Hawaii.
Courtesy of Walt Disney Studios, we have the following photo gallery from the red carpet of the film’s premiere of the Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films’ production. In addition to leading actors Helen Mirren (Prospera), Felicity Jones (Miranda), Reeve Carney (Ferdinand), Tom Conti (Gonzalo), Russell Brand (Trinculo) and Ben Whishaw (Ariel), the premiere was also attended by the cast of the upcoming Broadway production of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark which casts Carney in the lead role and is being directed by Julie Taymor.
