Report: Disney Consumer Products and Pixar Present ‘Toy Story 3′ – Part One

I was extremely fortunate to attend an event earlier this week in which Disney Consumer Products launched dozens of new toys from Mattel, Thinkway Toys, LEGO, Hasbro and JAKKS Pacific, just some vof the licensees for Toy Story 3 products with the aid of some very special guests.

Epic Mickey iPhone/iPad App Held at Gotham Hall in the Herald Square area, the space was magically transformed into the Sunnyside Daycare Center featuring oversized props, shrinking us all down to toy size. An over-sized chair provided an appropriate photo opportunity while Woody, Jessie and Buzz Lightyear were on hand to greet guests and to take complimentary photos.

Epic Mickey iPhone/iPad App To kick off the presentation, Mary Beech, Vice President/General Manager for Global Studio Franchise Development at Disney Consumer Products, talked about the previous night’s event at the Toy of the Year Awards in which John Lasseter was inducted into the International Toy Hall of Fame. We were shown the mini-documentary that was shown during the awards show which focused on Lasseter’s contributions to the industry and featured many of his colleagues at Pixar as well as his wife, Nancy, and his three sons who spoke of receiving a Buzz and Woody for Christmas after Toy Story had first been released.

[SinglePic not found]Lasseter took the stage next and talked about the genesis of the toy story franchise — how the idea was hatched after witnessing his niece’s approach to toys and wondering how the toys would react if they were alive. After implementing some of the concept in the Pixar short Tin Toy, he talked about how the story was made to be able to reach an older audience by giving the toys neuroses such as Rex’s expectation to be the fiercest creature on earth despite his tiny little arms or Mr. Potato Head’s chip on his shoulder because his body parts are always being removed and re-arranged. Of course, Lasseter says, a toy’s biggest fear is being outgrown, leading into a key plot point in Toy Story 3 in which the toys are led to believe that a daycare center is nirvana — a ‘retirement home for toys’ — in which there will always be a steady flow of children needing the toys and no need to become emotionally attached to the kids as they come and go.

First Look: Mattel Introduces Toys for Rapunzel, Toy Story 3, Cars and More

The 107th annual American International Toy Fair is about to kick off in New York City and we couldn’t be more excited. In honor of the 1200+ exhibitors showing off their latest and greatest in toys, we thought we’d take a sneak peek at some of the new Disney toys from Mattel that you can expect to find at your favorite retailer later this year.

We’ll start with this summer’s most anticipated event: Toy Story 3.

Toy Story 3 Buzz Lightyear Deluxe Action Wing Pack from MattelFirst up is the Buzz Lightyear Deluxe Action Wing Pack (Ages 6+; MSRP $49.99; Available May). Junior Space Rangers can sport this backpack style gear which — at a touch of a button — pops out a set of their very own wings, useful for flying or simply falling with style. Other buttons speak some of Buzz’s most popular catchphrases, but the coolest part of all is that the wings can sense when they’re in the horizontal position and will automatically play ‘flying’ noises. When the mission’s been accomplished, the wings contract at the press of a button.

If you’ve been following the TS3 news and have seen the new trailer, you probably already know that Ken (Michael Keaton) joins the Toy Story family and given that Mattel is the home of Ken and Barbie, the Barbie Toy Story 3 Made For Each Other Gift Set (Ages 3+; MSRP $24.99; Available May) is a zero-brainer. The pair of dolls help re-live the magic of the film dressed in the style as they appear on screen.

A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3 to Make Blu-ray 3D Debut in 2010

It will require a 3D capable television and a 3D capable blu-ray player, but The Hollywood Reporter has relayed Disney’s announcement that the newly established Blu-ray 3D standard will be embraced and rushed to market beginning with at least three releases this year (all presumably around the holiday season): A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3. Perhaps it’s too soon, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Disney/Pixar’s UPthrown into the mix shortly thereafter either.

At D23 Expo, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment demo’d a prototype of a 3D home system from Panasonic. The home system, which uses special shutter-oriented glasses to alternate between eyes, almost faithfully recreates the current 3D movie-going experience at home.

Sneak Peek of Toy Story 3 Now Available Online (Video)

This past weekend, ABC Family presented a sneak peek at the upcoming Toy Story 3 along with a brief introduction by director Lee Unkrich. The clip, just short of two minutes, shows the beginning of the film where Andy, who is now preparing to head to college, needs to decide which toys to keep, which to store in the attic and which get thrown out. This is basically the same clip that we saw during the Toy Story 3 presentation at the D23 Expo (in 2D) and I remember being shocked when Andy makes one of his decisions. Check it out below, courtesy of Disney/Pixar.
