Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 Will Cross $1B Today; Disney to Become First Studio with Two $1B Films in Single Year

Two weeks after becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 will cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office today, joining Alice in Wonderland as the second $1 billion film this year from The Walt Disney Studios – the first studio in history to accomplish this feat. Disney first crossed the $1 billion threshold with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in 2006. Toy Story 3 becomes the only animated film to reach this milestone and the seventh title in industry history.

“It’s been an incredible year as we saw the Pixar team bring Buzz and Woody back to the big screen and watched Tim Burton’s vision for Alice in Wonderland take the world by storm,” said Rich Ross, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “These box office triumphs prove that creative storytelling brought to life by imaginative, inspired and talented professionals is something audiences respond to the world over.”

As of Thursday (8/26/10), Toy Story 3 tallied more than $592.9 million internationally, Disney’s largest international animated release. Latin American audiences have contributed $138 million making Toy Story 3 the highest grossing Disney film ever released in the region. Toy Story 3 is the most successful UK release in Disney history and currently stands as the fourth biggest title in territory history with $102.4 million in box office receipts so far. In Japan, the film has taken in $111.2 million and spent five consecutive weeks as the #1 movie. Toy Story 3 currently ranks as the #7 film in global box office history and domestically ranks #9 with $404.6 million in receipts to date.

Alice in Wonderland began setting records during its opening weekend (March 5-7), becoming the biggest March opening in industry history, the highest 3D opening ever and The Walt Disney Studios’ biggest opening for a non-sequel film. Internationally, the film went on to tally more than $690 million, becoming Disney’s biggest overseas release of all time and the fourth biggest title ever released overseas. Worldwide, the film took in $1.0243 billion, ranking it as the #5 film in global box office history.

Disney Fears ‘Toy’ May Get Burned by ‘Dragon;’ Abandons Coveted Annies

The most successful animated film of all time, Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3, will not be recognized this year by one of the most highly prized awards in the animation industry — at least if Disney can help it.

The Walt Disney Company is withdrawing sponsorship and consideration from the International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood and its 38th annual Annie Awards which is scheduled to take place on February 5, 2011 at UCLA Royce Hall in Los Angeles, CA. This represents the first time in the award’s near-forty year history that Disney will not be sponsoring the event in some capacity.

At the heart of the estrangement is how ASIFA handles its membership and voting process. According to Variety, Walt Disney Animation and Disney/Pixar President Dr. Ed Catmull is unhappy with the lack of vetting process in that it accepts nearly anyone as a member and allows them to vote. Further to that, it’s claimed that DreamWorks Animation supplies each of its employees with a membership to the organization and unfairly weighs the votes in DWA’s favor.

While Disney/Pixar’s UP claimed the top spot last year, DreamWorks Animation didn’t have an entry and instead dominated the field of animation in television,  but this year they will have How to Train Your Dragon up against Disney’s Toy Story 3 and Tangled and it appears that Catmull may prefer to see Toy Story 3 as a never-ran rather than chance it becoming an also-ran. Two years ago, Kung Fu Panda dominated the awards, trumping both Bolt and — quite more shockingly — Wall-E, which went on to spite the Annies and win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature anyway.

With other key awards such as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences now paying more attention to animated films than ever before, the importance of the Annie may be dwindling, particularly if the notion that its awards can essentially be bought proves to be true.

‘Toy Story’ Trilogy Ten Disc Set Now Available for Pre-Order on Amazon.com

Amazon.com has now listed a ten disc set for the Toy Story 3 trilogy to be released on November 2, the same day the film is being released on its own. Don’t let the ten disc description fool you, however, it appears to just simply refer to the 3 disc Toy Story (Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy), 3 disc Toy Story 2 (Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy) and 4 disc Toy Story 3 (2 Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy). No additional information or artwork is available at this time other than the price tag of $69.99.

‘Toy Story 3′ Now Highest Grossing Animated Film of All Time with $920M+ Box Office Worldwide

With record-breaking box office tallies around the world, Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 has become the highest-grossing animated film of all time taking in more than $920 million at the global box office to date.  This weekend, the critically acclaimed Toy Story 3 is expected to become Disney’s second film to cross the $400 million domestic threshold and currently ranks as the 4th highest grossing film in company history globally.

“In 1995, the talented team at Pixar introduced a cowboy, a space ranger and their friends who have gone on to become some of the most beloved characters in the world.  The success of Toy Story is due to the tremendously creative and innovative team at Pixar, led by John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, and our incredible marketing and distribution teams around the world,” said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios.  “In Toy Story 3, director Lee Unkrich, producer Darla Anderson and the incredible team at Pixar have given audiences a film that continued the rich storytelling and character building that have become synonymous with every Pixar release.”

Toy Story 3 started its record-breaking domestic run on June 18 becoming Disney/Pixar’s highest grossing opening weekend taking in $109 million and marking the highest June opening in industry history.  Toy Story 3 was the 11th Disney/Pixar title to debut in the #1 position on the opening weekend of wide release.

Toy Story 3 continues to charm audiences around the world, tallying more than $518 million to date, and is expected become Disney’s largest international animated release this weekend.  Latin American audiences have contributed $138 million making Toy Story 3 the highest ever grossing Disney film in the region. The film has ranked as the #1 film in the UK for four consecutive weeks and is the most successful release in company history with $90 million to date. Another key driver of the film is Japan, where the film has taken in $84 million while spending five consecutive weeks as the #1 movie in the territory.   Toy Story 3 is climbing the box office charts, and currently ranks as the #14 film in global box office history.

While Buzz, Woody and the gang delight audiences in theatres around the world, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has also announced that Toy Story 3 will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on November 2, 2010 and is now available for pre-order from Amazon.com in Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy, Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and DVD formats.

‘Toy Story 3′ on Blu-ray and DVD, ‘Dance Star Mickey’ Now Available for Pre-order

As we previously announced, you can bring home the ‘#1 animated film of the year,’ Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 on Disney Blu-ray and DVD on November 2, 2010. This is confirmed by Amazon.com which now lists the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy (not displayed here), Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and DVD editions available for pre-order. Each of the Blu-ray sets consists of two Blu-ray discs.

Although it’s not listed as of yet, we do anticipate at least one more edition of the film to become available, that of the BD 3D/Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, but that one is curiously missing at this time. Reportedly there will be no 3D Blu-ray edition of the film as previously announced.

Despite a hefty price tag, we believe Dance Star Mickey is destined to be one of the hottest toys this holiday season. Disney/Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 3′ Comes Out to Play on Blu-ray and DVD on November 2

According to a photo of an in-store retail advertisement posted on The Digital Bits, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will be releasing Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 on Disney Blu-ray and DVD on November 2. Nothing has been officially confirmed, but it’s hard to debate with a photo (at least one that hasn’t been modified). This would place the film one week ahead of the rumored release date for Finding Nemo of November 9.

It’s also two weeks prior to the home release of A Christmas Carol which is important to note because that will be the first Blu-ray 3D title released by WDSHE and Toy Story 3 is also anticipated to be released in Blu-ray 3D this year along with Alice in Wonderland, which means there would be a lag between the 2D and 3D versions and, traditionally speaking, WDSHE has often favored the more technologically advanced edition being released first when there is a time period between the releases.

Disney Store will also be releasing a special bundle edition of Toy Story 3 with exclusively dressed Woody and Buzz dolls as we first previewed here.
