Yesterday we shared news of a re-imagining of the Airline chair favored by Walt Disney and his team of animators which makes its debut today at the Art Basel/Design Miami fairs.
Also making its debut from Walt Disney Signature is a new chair inspired by TRON: Legacy by New York designer Dror Benshetrit.
‘Dror’s mission is to articulate the complex meaning of objects in the simplest of ways. Their uses become a part of their narratives, expressed in transformations that are both metaphorical and literal. Raw Data forms a jagged and angular landscape, serving as a muse for a chair that is comprised of intersecting layers and textures of ‘digital’ rock. Constructed of composite material consisting of impregnated fiberglass with polyester resin processed with manual layering, these Special Production Walt Disney Signature TRON Armchairs invite you to “sit off the grid.”‘
The chair will be available in several variations, one of which is pictured above. For more photos of the chair, check out the source article on Core77.
Disney Consumer Products and Avant Gallery are pleased to announce the launch of the Walt Disney Signature Airline_009 Chair in collaboration with Cory Grosser as they recreate a classic Disney inspiration. The launch event of the exhibit will take place December 2, 2010 during Art Basel/Design Miami fairs.
Los Angeles based designer Cory Grosser and Walt Disney Signature, Disney’s adult lifestyle brand, have imagined a new armchair and ottoman inspired by the original Airline Chair from 1934, which Walt Disney selected when he built his original animation studio in Burbank, California.
In 1938, with the success of, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney began to plan the construction of the ultimate animation studio in Burbank, California. Walt wanted his studio designed to facilitate optimum production, which is why he commissioned the design of the Airline Chair (1934). The chair was manufactured for a limited time and ultimately, the only chairs produced were the 300 or so which Walt Disney purchased for his new studio.
Visually beautiful and exceptionally comfortable, the Airline Chair was used widely throughout the studio by Walt Disney animators. To this day, the Airline Chair is a physical connection to the story of Disney.
“Like Walt Disney’s animators, our Walt Disney Signature team were moved by the Airline Chair design and its heritage and sought to recreate the spirit of the original in a re-imagined more streamlined form,” said Pam Lifford, executive vice president, global fashion and home, Disney Consumer Products. “Inspired by lightness and flight, realized with cutting-edge technology and advanced joinery techniques, the Airline_009 chair stretches the boundaries of possibility and the power of imagination. We believe this chair is a new tool for imagination and creativity and we hope it inspires its owners as the original did.”
The Airline_009 chair combines both the classic design of the past chair, but with modern touches of today. It celebrates advances in furniture construction with a sculpted walnut frame and fine leather upholstery. Through careful design choices, the chair references the past but appears both light and unmistakably modern. It reclines with a concealed hinge hidden between the seat and back.
Cory Grosser is a multi-disciplinary designer based in Los Angeles and an instructor at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif. Surface Magazine named him one of the Top Avante Garde Designers in America and The Wall Street Journal proclaimed him “one of the designers most likely to become a household name.” Grosser’s work has appeared on tv and movies in America and abroad.
“This is the first time in my career that I have re-imagined an existing product. My goal was to create a new, modern chair that celebrates the original, but is updated to today’s way of living through improved aesthetics, manufacturing, comfort and quality of the materials for a lighter and elegant look,” said designer Cory Grosser. “I was most inspired by the story and the notion that Walt was willing to embrace a design that was so advanced for its time and it was exciting to have full access to the Disney archives and to learn how the chair was used in the original studio.”
The Airline_009 chair from Walt Disney Signature will be available exclusively at Avant Gallery for six months starting February 15, 2011 and will retail for approximately $3,900 and $1,400 for the accompanying ottoman. The chair will be available in black, brown, ivory, tan, red, orange, yellow, and green leather upholstery.
Walt Disney Signature, Disney’s first upscale, inspired, non-character, adult lifestyle brand and Cappellini, one of the most renowned design innovators worldwide, today unveiled five limited edition chairs at the Milan Furniture Fair in Italy. The combination of Cappellini’s reputation for innovation and the magic and inspiration of Disney has produced a series of everyday products that resemble works of art.
This introduction follows the success of Walt Disney Signature’s dining installation in collaboration with Cappellini for last month’s Dining By Design DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) event in New York City
A 3-dimensional sculpting of Mickey Mouse sitting on a giant chair, previously used for the DIFFA event display, was recreated at Fuori Salone, Milano Design Village to mark today’s launch. The Mickey sculpture is made of polyurethane, measures more than three metres tall and weighs 40 kilos.
“Walt Disney and Cappellini both have a shared approach to design, creativity and collaboration that turns everyday products into functional works of art,” commented Pamela Lifford, executive vice president, Home and Fashion, Disney Consumer Products. “Collaborating with a leading Italian design brand specialising in contemporary furnishings like Cappellini is another exciting step in continuing Walt Disney Signature’s philosophy on design and innovation.”
“This collaboration is the premise for a joint Cappellini and Walt Disney Signature stylistic commitment that promises to become a new, interesting and exciting chapter in the history of contemporary design, combining Cappellini’s strong inclination for innovation with the magical creativity of Disney,” added Giulio Cappellini, Art Director for Cappellini.
The Ribbon stool and the Fish Chair, Y’s de Luxe and Rive Droite armchairs are embellished with patterns, each one with a different image and underlying theme. The Ribbon’s new profile blends Cappellini design with the outline of Disney’s most famous character, Mickey Mouse; Y’s de Luxe and Rive Droite reflect and multiply the same image in striking processed fabrics; the Fish Chair’s shape is inspired by nature found in many Disney films like Bambi and produced in recycled material. Products will be available to the public in late Spring 2010.
Founded in 1984, the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) organization launches a tour each spring titled Dining By Design mixing top design with fine cuisine. Currently located Pier 94 in New York City through March 22, the tour will make stops in Kansas City, Chicago and Francisco.
For the third year in a row, Walt Disney Signature joins the DIFFA exhibition, this time teaming up with renown Italian designer Cappellini to bring a touch of Disney to haute design, allowing attendees to indulge in a delectable combination of dining and Disney.
The exhibit features a 10-foot tall polyurethane sculpture of Mickey Mouse who hovers over the installation which contains elements such as seating and a throw offering Mickey Mouse accents. The Cappellini ribbon stool (designed by Nendo), featuring Mickey ears as a backing, will be available as a limited edition at the Milan Furniture Fair in April.
