CONFIRMED: ‘Ballad of Nessie’ Attached to ‘Winnie the Pooh’
Walt Disney Studios has confirmed what we first speculated back in October 2010, that the Walt Disney Animation Studios short, The Ballad of Nessie will be the lead-in to Winnie the Pooh when it opens in theaters on July 15, 2011.
Narrated by Scottish comedian Billy Connolly and directed by the Emmy® Award-winning team of Stevie Wermers-Skelton and Kevin Deters (‘Prep & Landing,’ ‘Operation Secret Santa’ and the 2007 Goofy short, How to Hook Up Your Home Theater), The Ballad of Nessie is animated in classic Disney hand-drawn style. Written by Wermers-Skelton, Deters, and Regina Conroy, the film is produced by Dorothy McKim and Tamara Boutcher, and features a musical score by Oscar®-winning composer Michael Giacchino (Ratatouille, Up). Animation on ‘Nessie’ was supervised by five of Disney’s top talents: Andreas Deja, Mark Henn, Randy Haycock, Dale Baer and Ruben A. Aquino.
Set in the ‘bonny blue highlands’ of Scotland, The Ballad of Nessie is a whimsical and colorful tall tale about the friendly Loch Ness monster, Nessie, and how she (and her best friend, the rubber duck MacQuack) came to live in the moor they now call home. Setting the adventure into motion is a greedy land developer named MacFroogle, who decides to build a mini-golf empire on top of Nessie’s home.
The short will make its world premiere tomorrow evening at the Anima Film Festival in Belgium. A book adaptation (written by Kieran Lachlan and illustrated by Andy Harkness) will be released on May 3, 2011 and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

‘Winnie the Pooh’ Fun Facts, Character Model Sheets, Concept Art and More!
Walt Disney Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios have provided us with an extraordinary number of character model sheets, concept art and even new stills in honor of its return to the Hundred Acre Wood in Winnie the Pooh which will be in theaters nationwide on July 15, 2011.
They’ve also provided us with some ‘fun facts’ regarding the movie and some of the magic that went into producing it, beginning with some of the original Pooh stories by A.A. Milne that inspired the new film.
MAKING MAGIC
STORY TIME — Senior story artist, Burny Mattinson, a 58-year Disney veteran animator/director/storyman who had worked as an assistant animator on the Studio’s first “Pooh” theatrical featurette back in 1966 (“Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree”), turned to three of A. A. Milne’s best-loved stories for inspiration in creating this latest animated feature. “In Which Eeyore Loses His Tale” appeared in Milne’s first Pooh collection, “Winnie-the-Pooh” (1926). “In Which Rabbit Has a Busy Day” and “In Which Christopher Robin Leads an Expotition to the North Pole” both appeared in the second book, “The House at Pooh Corner” (1928).
FIELD TRIP — In the fall of 2009, members of the film’s creative team (including directors Don Hall and Stephen Anderson, art director Paul Felix, layout supervisor Razoul Azadani and background supervisor Sunny Apinchapong) went on an expedition of their own to England. They visited Ashdown Forest in Sussex, the setting of Milne’s stories located a mile from where the author had his country home. There, they took copious photographs and did water colors on the actual sites. Felix was inspired by the lighting in the forest, and incorporated this element into his vision for the film.
A TALE OF A TAIL — During the course of the film, Eeyore’s pals attempt to find a replacement for his lost tail. Among the 17 different items that are suggested and tried are a balloon, a yo-yo, a cuckoo clock, a weather vane, a dartboard, an umbrella, a moose head, and an accordion.

Multiple Emmy Award Winning ‘Prep & Landing’ Returns with All New Short and Half Hour Special
“Prep &Landing” returns this season with an all new 7-Minute animated short, “Operation: Secret Santa,” airing on ABC in December, while the half-hour animated special, “Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice,” debuts in 2011. “Prep & Landing” became an instant favorite with viewers and emerged as TV’s number 1 holiday special in the 2009 season. It was also the highest kids rating (kids 2-11/ 7.5/23), for any primetime telecast on broadcast TV in 2009. The special went on to win four Emmy Awards.
“Operation: Secret Santa” was written and directed by Stevie Wermers-Skelton & Kevin Deters, produced by Dorothy McKim, and executive produced by John Lasseter. This “Prep & Landing” “stocking stuffer” short film follows the comic adventures of Santa’s stealthiest elves, Lanny and Wayne. With Christmas only a few short days away, Mrs. Claus, voiced by Betty White, and Magee, voiced by Sarah Chalke, enlist Wayne voiced by Dave Foley, and Lanny voiced by Derek Richardson on a secret mission to retrieve a mysterious item hidden deep within the office of Santa Claus! Can the intrepid duo acquire the target in time, or will they be discovered by the Big Guy voiced by Morgan Sheppard and doomed to placement on the Naughty List?
The yuletide adventures of Christmas elves Lanny and Wayne continue in a half-hour, holiday special for 2011 in “Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice.” With the Big 2-5 fast approaching, Wayne and Lanny must race to recover classified North Pole technology which has fallen into the hands of a computer-hacking Naughty Kid! Desperate to prevent Christmas from descending into chaos, Wayne seeks out the foremost Naughty Kid expert to aid in the mission: a bombastic member of the Coal Bucket Brigade who also happens to be his estranged brother, Noel.
Commenting on the announcement, Lasseter said, “We had so much fun making the first ‘Prep & Landing’ special, and the response from the audience and our colleagues in the industry was so terrific, that we wanted to bring these great characters back for more holiday fun. Kevin and Stevie have done an amazing job writing and directing these films, and everyone at Walt Disney Animation Studios has pitched in to make them truly extraordinary entertainment. Wayne, Lanny and the rest of our animated cast are funnier than ever in ‘Operation: Secret Santa’ and ‘Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice;’ we know they will become holiday favorites.”
Kevin Deters joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1996, and has worked in a variety of creative capacities during his 14-year tenure. He made his directing debut in 2007 on the hilarious animated Goofy short, “How to Hook Up Your Home Theater,” and went on to write and direct Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first-ever Christmas special for TV, “Prep & Landing.” In addition to “Operation: Secret Santa,” Deters (and his writing/directing partner Stevie Wermers-Skelton) shares writing and directing credits on the upcoming Disney animated short, “The Ballad of Nessie.” His previous Disney film credits include “Mulan,” “Tarzan,” Lilo & Stitch,” “Brother Bear,” and “Chicken Little.”
Stevie Wermers-Skelton began her association with Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1994, starting as a clean-up artist/in-betweener on “Pocahontas,” and continuing on to work as a story artist on “Fantasia/2000,” “Tarzan,” and “Brother Bear.” In 2007, she became one of the Studios first female directors with her work on the Goofy short, “How to Hook Up Your Home Theater. In collaboration with Kevin Deters, she wrote and directed the upcoming short, “The Ballad of Nessie.”
Dorothy McKim joined Disney in 1980, and currently serves as development producer for Walt Disney Animation Studios. In that role, she is responsible for working with all of the Studio’s directors in developing their films. She also oversees the development of all Disney Animation shorts. In 1984, McKim started a long association with Walt Disney Animation Studios with her first assignment on the 1988 feature, “Oliver & Company.” She went on to work in a variety of production roles (production manager, director of production, and co-producer) on such landmark films as “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” and “Tarzan.” McKim also served as producer on Disney’s 2007 computer-animated release, “Meet the Robinsons,” and the six-minute short Tick Tock Tale. McKim repeated that role on the 2009 ABC original animated holiday special, “Prep & Landing.”
Walt Disney Animation Studios brings imagination to life through a wide variety of animated films, building upon an unsurpassed legacy for humorous and heartfelt storytelling, unforgettable characters, incredible artistry, and cutting-edge innovation. The WDAS crew is filled with diverse talents from all around the globe, and their dedication and passion for telling great stories through the art of animation, and using the latest technological advances, has led to the creation of some of the industry’s most successful and exciting entertainment. The Studio’s latest animated feature, “Tangled,” raises the bar for CG character animation in terms of nuanced expression and performance, and brings a fun-filled new twist to a well-known tale.

Speculation: Disney’s ‘The Ballad of Nessie’ May Be In Theaters Alongside ‘Winnie the Pooh,’ Summer 2011
In 2008, Walt Disney Animation Studios announced an initiative to re-introduce the practice of animated shorts, particularly leading into full-length theatrical features due, in part, to the success of Disney/Pixar’s famed shorts lead-ins.
One of the announced projects was one that immediately caught the attention and affections of many a Disney fan, that being of The Ballad of Nessie. Directed by Stevie Wermers and Kevin Deters, the 2D short is described by the studio as having ‘art direction evocative of the Disney shorts from the 1940s and 50s’ and being ‘the honest to goodness true tale of Loch Ness and its most famous resident.’
The reason for our speculation that The Ballad of Nessie may open the July 15, 2011 release of Winnie the Pooh is that the 32-page hardcover complementary book is slated to be released on May 3, 2011 according to pre-orders now being accepted by Amazon.com. This makes perfect sense as far as timing is concerned as Disney film-related books are often published around two months prior to the film’s release. In fact, although there are several Winnie the Pooh titles slated to be released between now and then, almost 10 titles are scheduled to be released the same day alone as The Ballad of Nessie.

Disney and Pixar Innovations Considered for Scientific Achievement Academy Awards
The Scientific and Technical Awards Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that 15 scientific and technical achievements have been selected for further awards consideration, three of which have been created between Disney and Pixar. Although the list has been published, it’s completely preliminary and further innovations are being invited to be considered. The committee will meet in December to make recommendations to Academy’s Board of Governors, which will make the final awards decisions.
Among those devices and processes being considered are Pixar Animation Studios’ Misterd and Alfred (a job queuing and distributing rendering system) and XGen, an arbitrary primitive generator from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

On the official Facebook page for Tangled, Walt Disney Animation Studios has shared this new piece of concept art which shows how Rapunzel has opted to bide her time as an avid painted for 18 years locked in the tower.

Walt Disney Animation Offers Sneak Peek at Newest Short ‘Tick Tock Tale’
Although it’s fallen behind the anticipated schedule, there has been a lot of talk about Walt Disney Studios taking a cue from Pixar and days of yore and bringing back animated shorts to premiere before every film. Even more recent reports speculate that Disney will be applying this train of thought to live action shorts featuring lesser known characters from the Marvel Universe.
At the 2010 Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, Walt Disney Animation Studios recently offered a screening of one of its long-awaited shorts alongside The Princess and the Frog. In Tick Tock Tale — directed by Dean Wellins and produced by Dorothy McKim – a small clock adorned with a whimsical figure for sale in a shop is overlooked by customers and looked down upon the other, more refined clocks. That is until a thief breaks into the shop one night and changes everything.
