Disneyland’s ‘Soundsational Summer’ — Behind the Music
Since Mickey Mouse first whistled his way into entertainment history in “Steamboat Willie” (the first animated cartoon with synchronized sound), music has been one of the cornerstones of Disney enchantment, from movies and television to recordings and, of course, Theme Parks. And since magnificent music is one of the most magical forces behind the spectacular experiences you’ll enjoy during Disney Soundsational Summer at the Disneyland Resort, Disneyland asked three experts, who specialize in this artistry, to share some insider views.
Wondrous waves of oceanic octaves
Now, Disney California Adventure Park is the place to experience one of the most elaborate ride-through attractions ever inspired by a Walt Disney Pictures animated feature: The Little Mermaid~Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. And as you voyage through this fantastic world — seeing the story unfold before your eyes in a blend of Audio-Animatronics® wizardry and special effects in the tradition of some of the most beloved Disney Parks attractions — the songs of multiple Academy Award® winners Alan Menken and Howard Ashman will be with you all the way.
“To create the music for the attraction, we brought in the multitalented Danny Troob, who is a long-time collaborator with Alan Menken as the orchestrator on the animated film versions of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, as well as ‘The Little Mermaid’ on Broadway,” said John Dennis, Director, Music Production, Walt Disney Imagineering. “We worked with Danny to combine elements from the original feature film soundtrack to create a seamless music experience for the attraction.”
So, what you’ll hear is the voice of Ariel, Jodi Benson, singing “Part of Your World,” and the voice of Ursula, Pat Carroll, singing “Poor Unfortunate Souls” as you heard them in the film, woven into new music that flows from scene to scene in the attraction.
When the directors of the landmark Walt Disney Pictures animated film, The Little Mermaid, recently experienced The Little Mermaid~Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, they were thrilled. As John recalled, “They said that it was really wonderful to see that, after 20-plus years, Ariel actually got her own dedicated attraction!”
Some of the most magnificent music in the galaxy
Now at Disneyland Park, Star Tours: The Adventures Continue blasts you into all-new interstellar voyages throughout a galaxy “far, far away.” But while the attraction will take you to destinations unknown, from core systems to the Outer Rim, the Star Wars” experience wouldn’t be complete without the iconic musical score by multiple Academy Award®-winning composer, John Williams.
“John came to Walt Disney Imagineering and we told him what our plans were,” recalled John Dennis. “He said, ‘Great! How can I help?’ He was really terrific to us. We were planning to record completely new versions of his Star Wars” themes. He said, ‘You know, we’ve got some 15 hours of music that was recorded for the feature films. I think we can find enough music in the film scores to use in the attraction.’”
After several weeks of music editorial, that is exactly what happened. John and his music editor worked closely with Walt Disney Imagineering to create the music track you’ll hear in the “main show” portion of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. In fact, Williams’ music is so central to the Star Wars” experience, you’ll enjoy his iconic themes throughout your journey through the entire Star Tours: The Adventures Continue attraction.
Star Tours:The Adventures Continue will be a feast for all the senses. But the ears will have the especially delightful treat of hearing so much of John Williams’ memorable music — those rousing, exciting themes we associate with so many favorite Star Wars characters and how we thrilled to their fantastic adventures.
A glorious procession of Disney delights
A new kind of musical approach now literally “floats” down Main Street, U.S.A. now that Mickey’s Soundsational Parade made its Disneyland Park premiere last month.
“They’re all classic Disney songs,” said John Addis, Senior Show Director, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment. “Plus, there’s a new ‘Soundsational’ theme written by Mark Hammond, who also did all the arrangements for the parade.”
Every float has its own color palette and musical style, from Mickey doing a “friendly drum competition” to a new version of “Mickey Mouse March” to Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie and Abu appearing in an “Arabian Nights meets Bollywood” float with such tunes as “Friend Like Me” and “Prince Ali.” The princess float features “I See the Light” from Tangled; a New Orleans riverboat celebrates Dixieland jazz and Cajun zydeco in songs like “Almost There” and “Dig a Little Deeper” from The Princess and the Frog; and much more.
Music, color and magic on the water
“Mark Hammond arranged our World of Color music,” said John, referring to the Disney California Adventure spectacle — in which fountains, animation, pyrotechnics and effects fuse into unforgettable sights and sounds. “We produced the soundtrack in London with a 100-piece orchestra at the famous Abbey Road studio. The music came out exceedingly well, with a lot of fanciful musical themes to support the visuals in the show.
“It has its roots in the theme from Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color that the Sherman Brothers wrote for the Sunday night television series. The song was given a fresh, new sound that sets the whole show up.
“There are some fantastic visual elements in World of Color with technology that most people have never seen,” said John. “There are nearly 400-foot-long walls of fountains with gigantic projections. The music needs to be just as expansive and it really steps up to all that impact and scope.”
Rounding out all this Disney Soundsational Summer enchantment is a nighttime fireworks extravaganza so magical that it’s called simply that: Magical, A Fireworks Spectacular.
As a Disney veteran, Bruce Healy, Senior Music Director and Producer, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment, told us that this extravaganza was “truly another labor of love.” The first act is all about the magic of childhood, based on Walt Disney Pictures’ Peter Pan. The next act is the magic of a wish based on Walt Disney Pictures’ Pinocchio. Another is the magic of a mother’s love, so beautifully presented in Walt Disney Pictures’ Dumbo. And the last act celebrates the magic of a kiss, inspired by Disney Princesses.
“The score is sung by Eden Espinosa, who played Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway,” said Bruce. “She is especially dear to our hearts, since she used to be one of our Disneyland Park performers! Eden sings the Magical theme.” Some of the other songs are “Give a Little Whistle,” “Heigh-Ho” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” — which is one of our biggest moments, because the fireworks seem to do a big ‘kick line’ in the sky.
“I think my favorite moment features one of my all-time favorite songs from a Walt Disney Pictures film, ‘Baby Mine.’ Not only does Tinker Bell fly over Sleeping Beauty Castle, but Dumbo does, tooand there really is not a dry eye in the house.”
Clearly, Magical, A Fireworks Spectacular is more than just a fireworks show. But then, this won’t be just another summer if you visit Disneyland Resort and enjoy all the wonders that await. You just may find yourself using the only word that seems to encompass all the dazzling experiences…”Soundsational!”

Themed Entertainment Assocation Recognizes Imagineer Kim Irvine, ‘World of Color,’ TRON ARG and More
The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) today announced the fifteen recipients of its 17th Annual Thea Awards with nearly a quarter of the coveted awards going to The Walt Disney Company and the Disney family.
“The annual Thea Awards, presented by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) recognize and honor excellence in the creation of extraordinary visitor experiences, attractions, exhibits and places,” says incoming TEA president Rick Rothschild of FAR Out! Creative Direction. “Storytelling and teamwork are the heart of the Experience Design Industry and its projects. TEA’s Thea Awards celebrate storytelling across the globe – educational and entertaining stories of heritage, history, fiction, fantasy, magic and even hard science – delivered with artistry and the appropriate use of technology at museums, theme parks, world expos, special events and other settings. The Thea Awards also honor teamwork at its very best – the creative handshake between the visionary project owner and the multidisciplinary collective of designers, artisans and technicians who realize the vision. Also, this year we commemorate the late Harrison “Buzz” Price, who at the very first Thea Awards in 1994 was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award. In his honor, we’ve renamed it the ‘Buzz Price Award, recognizing a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements.’
This year, the newly renamed “Buzz Price Award” went to Walt Disney Imagineer and Art Director Kim Irvine who began her career at WDI in 1970. Working alongside her mother Leota Toombs (recent Disney Legend for her Imagineering contributions) Kim was able to learn her skills under such greats as Mary Blair, John Hench, Mark Davis, and Claude Coats. John Hench would become Kim’s mentor, as he relied on her more and more for her color expertise, a skill for which John was the undisputed master. This skill would serve Kim well over the ensuing decades that she would lead the art direction at Disneyland, always finding new pallets of color and emotion to keep the Park appealing to the ever evolving demographic. Kim contributed to many of the early attractions at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Epcot including: Small World, interiors for the Contemporary Resort, The Land, Universe of Energy, Germany and Mexico pavilions. In 1980, Kim joined the Disneyland Design Studio and pioneered the development and evolution of that team as a model for the branches that exist in Disney’s resort locations around the world.
In her long held role as Art Director for Disneyland, Kim has been responsible for such projects as the Disneyland 50th celebration, most notably Sleeping Beauty Castle itself, and color schemes and symbolic designs representing each of Disneyland’s five decades. Kim was entrusted with the redesign of John Hench’s classic Plaza Inn Restaurant, the creation of Rancho Del Zocalo Restaurant in Frontierland and most recently, the complete concept for the magical Disneyland Dream Suite in New Orleans Square. While Disneyland has kept Kim busy, she can always squeeze in time for projects elsewhere when her expertise is keenly needed. As an example, the Disneyland Paris Castle interior and its Carrousel benefited from the loan of Kim’s talent. During the last year, Kim led the effort to reimagine “it’s a small world,” bringing new life to the 45-year-old classic, design of the new Disney Gallery and interiors for the new Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln exhibit on Main Street U.S.A., along with a variety of highly themed merchandise experiences.
Disney California Adventure’s “World of Color” took the Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement (Nighttime Spectacular). This nighttime fountain spectacular is a visual and technical marvel, and an important focal point in the reimagining of Disney California Adventure theme park. World of Color comes in the form of nearly 1,200 fountains, some shooting higher than 200 feet. Mist screens that can become 380 feet wide; as wide as the 15 million gallon Paradise Bay Lagoon itself, are the background palette of the show. A wide range of other elements includes Disney and Pixar animated film scene projections, lighting, lasers, fog, fire and music – adding up to some 18,000 points of show control. Five years in the making, the 26-minute show takes its name from the 1960s television series “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color.” A sense of the size and scope of this attraction can be further conveyed through a short list of the eight types of fountain attachments used: Four butterfly fountains, six dancer nozzles with intertwining dual nozzles, ten 200-foot geysers and 12 flower spouts, 76 water whips with heads that can turn in any direction, 400 chasers and 600 grid fountains at eight foot intervals complete the list.
The Walt Disney Family Museum was awarded the Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement (Museum). Celebrating its first anniversary on October 1, this museum was built, owned and operated by Walt Disney’s own family, with no direct connection to The Walt Disney Company. It is located in a series of historical buildings at The Presidio of San Francisco, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area of the National Park Service. The Museum is easily a half-day experience even for casual visitors, because it houses so much original material — drawings, artifacts, models, photos, three dimensional objects, etc. – created by Disney staff under Walt’s direction for films, television and the Disney theme parks for over 40 years. There are one-of-a-kind presentations (i.e., a model of Disneyland, supervised by Tony Baxter, that includes ideas Walt imagined but never built in the Anaheim park), audio and video recordings on over 200 video monitors exploring the Disney creative process during the Walt years, inclusion of many Disney creators that make clear Walt did not do it alone, and a balanced explanation of Walt’s darkest time: the Studio strike in 1941. There are artifacts unique to the Museum; for example, a brand new Multi-plane Camera rig, two stories tall, built for the Museum by Thea Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Don Iwerks. Also on display are the 32 Academy Awards presented to Walt Disney. The Walt Disney Family Foundation regularly presents special programs including screenings of films made during Walt’s time and has embarked on an ambitious program to engage school children in weekend creative activities.
Finally, the “Flynn Lives” Alternate Reality Game (ARG) took the honor of Outstanding Achievement for a promotional event during San Diego ComicCon 2010. The ARG combined elements of promotion, puzzles, game play, scavenger hunting and location-based entertainment into a completely new kind of guest experience. To promote the upcoming TRON LEGACY (a sequel/reboot of the groundbreaking original TRON film), this ARG created an experiential groundswell of interest in the film over nearly two years, leveraging social media and online connectivity to tell a compelling, immersive story that feels inherently part of the digital world of the film, filled with labyrinthine computer networks and competitive video games.
Starting with influential online bloggers and fans, the game created a “resistance movement” themed to the film’s mysterious digital-world storyline, told through numerous interconnected websites and real-world puzzles. This created a parallel story to the film, both online and within the real world – the characters from the movies would affect the player’s real lives with media, events, and rewards. All of the game’s events encouraged global collaboration – many puzzles could not be solved by a single player, and were played by people all over the world. Each step of the game would result in a real-world event; players were often rewarded with game “swag” mailed to them from the resistance movement, keeping them engaged. Certain puzzles led to secret real-world “drops” or phone calls with clandestine clues. Each step of the ARG progressed in scope and scale to include more and more of the real world. In particular, major real-world events like ComicCon included giant location-based attractions as part of the ARG, such as a full-size arcade recreated from the film at ComicCon 2009, and the futuristic “End Of Line” nightclub at ComicCon 2010 – a themed environment with wrap-around HD projection to create the feeling of flying inside the computer world.
Recommended by the Thea Awards Nominating Committee, the current slate of 15 Thea recipients were approved by the TEA International Board of Directors and will be honored at the 17th Annual Thea Awards Gala on March 12, 2011. Sponsored by Economics at AECOM, the event will be held at the Globe Theatre, Universal Studios Hollywood. The Awards Gala is an elegant, black-tie dinner event and is open to the public. Tickets/more information are available via the TEA website.

Disneyland Resort’s ‘World of Color’ Kicks off California Tour July 7 in San Francisco
Viewers around the world will join a one-of-a-kind, online phenomenon in July to experience the extraordinary magic of “World of Color,” the new after-dark spectacular presented nightly in Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim. The interactive tour will feature live shows in four California cities, and the online audience will travel “virtually” to each location to watch the shows and interact with the webcast.
In each city, specially produced animation will be projected onto a familiar city landmark, using a sensational mixture of special effects, high-tech projections and one of the storytelling themes presented in “World of Color.”
The public is invited to participate online only at the “World of Color” Road Show website (www.WorldofColorRoadShow.com), where viewers will enjoy a rich experience that includes Disney animation and music, video entertainment and a “viewer’s choice” opportunity to vote for the starring color in that evening’s show. Each city will have a broadcast location designed for media only.
This “online spectacular” is inspired by the dazzling “World of Color” show, which combines music, animation, water and a multitude of special effects in a magical celebration of Disney characters and storytelling. A new venture for the Disneyland Resort, the tour will utilize streaming online video to bring its own special magic to the World Wide Web and to iconic locations in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego and Los Angeles. Each locale will deliver a different, amazing show.
ONLINE EXPERIENCE: Viewers will be able to access the webcast performances live and on encore nights at the website, in English at www.WorldofColorRoadShow.com and in Spanish at www.coloresdisney.com. The site also features an artistic video mashup, interviews with the creators of “World of Color” and the voting option. Video clips from each iconic location will be added to the show on ensuing nights, inspiring viewers to follow the virtual tour throughout California.
CAST YOUR VOTE: Just as fairies cast their spells, online viewers will cast their votes each night for one of three colors representing each of the Three Good Fairies from “Sleeping Beauty” – Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. The color with the most votes will be featured in the show’s opening moment, complete with a trail of pixie dust. In true Disney style, the winning fairy will fly from computer screens to the landmark location and she will conjure the magical transformation of the landmark using the chosen color – red, green or blue. With this bit of magic, online audience members are able to lend their own spark of inspiration to the show.
SHOW THEMES: A different theme will come alive in each of the four cities, with each show reflecting a theme from the “World of Color” production at Disney California Adventure. To experience the show in each city, people will have to visit the website. There will be no accommodations on site in each city.
SAN FRANCISCO: In San Francisco, the unique animation will be projected onto the façade of a landmark that will be revealed online on Opening Night. The presentation is dedicated to the theme of “Love,” featuring romantic couples from Disney and Disney – Pixar animated films. The live show, presented Wednesday and Thursday, July 7 and 8, will repeat continuously from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Pacific time and will be shot from several different angles for the ongoing, live webcast. Encore webcasts (not live) of the San Francisco show will appear online from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 9 through 11.
SACRAMENTO: With forest and garden scenes from such films as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Pocahontas,” “Bambi” and “Alice in Wonderland,” the online experience in Sacramento will be built around the theme of “Nature.” Presented Thursday through Sunday, July 15-18, in historic Old Sacramento, it will be webcast live from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. each evening.
SAN DIEGO: The next stop will be San Diego where, appropriately enough, “Water” will be the theme of the interactive experience, featuring scenes from “The Little Mermaid,” “Finding Nemo” and others projected onto the U.S.S. Midway Museum at Navy Pier. The San Diego webcasts will be live from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, July 22-25.
LOS ANGELES: The final shows of the online tour will be projected onto the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles Thursday and Friday, July 29 and 30. The theme will be “Sky,” illustrated by scenes from such films as “Aladdin” and “Fantasia.” As before, the live online presentation will be repeated continuously from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Encore performances (not live) will be webcast from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, July 31 and August 1.

Patent Watch: Disney’s World of Color, Dance Ring Video Game
We have a couple of interesting patent applications from Disney Enterprises to share with you today, although the first one up, arguably the more interesting of the two, is not the lightest read imagineable.
Probably the most difficult aspect of digesting this patent application is that all the talk of water constantly makes us need to visit the bathroom, but out of jest, it appears that this could be some of the technology behind the new World of Color show at Disney California Adventure.
In Fluid Effects Platform with a Pivotally-Mounted and Remotely-Positioned Output Manifold, inventors Evelyn Wiseman, Theodore Carlsson, Jennifer Magill, Michael Layman, William Slusser, Jason Badger, Matthew Cotter and Charles Davis take a look at existing systems used to create water fountain shows and seek to improve upon them.
Some of the key features of the new system is a more compact, yet more versatile ‘fluid effects assembly’ which essentially allows for lighter platforms (for raising the system above the water when needed), allows the liquid to be projected in a wider arc and allows the nozzle(s) to be centered back to their home position remotely rather than having maintenance make a physical adjustment at the system itself. It should also be noted that the system explicitly covers all types of fluids — not just water — which includes the ability to disperse flammable liquids as well (oops! bathroom time again).
The other patent application we’d like to take a look at is something we must confess sounded a bit odd when we had first started reading it, but it all eventually began to sink in and (naturally) the drawings didn’t hurt.
It’s no denying that the Dance Dance Revolution format of gaming isn’t going away and Disney has certainly provided its fair share of entries into that genre, but now inventors Joseph Vance, Daniel Tyrrell, Matthew Allmer, Michael McAnaney and Sean Krankel are looking to turn that familiar gaming experience around — literally.
With the use of accelerometers and the like on the rise in gaming controllers such as the Nintendo Wii Remote, Sony PlayStation Move and Microsoft’s Nata — er, Kinect, it almost seems naturally that they be taken advantage of in a dancing game scenario. Enter the Dance Ring Video Game in which the player, equipped with multiple controllers, now seeks to use all of his/her limbs as opposed to just jumping on a mat. Instead of a vertical flow in which the items to match fall down the screen to cue the player, in this incarnation, the indicators stem from a 360 degree play area which is broken up into multiple segments. The indicators flow outwards from the center of the ring to one of the areas and the player must respond in kind by moving the right body part in the right way.

Photo Gallery: ‘World of Color’ Blue Carpet Premiere and Show at Disneyland Resort
In an event fitting only for a spectacle such as the new World of Color at Disney California Adventure, Disneyland pulled out all the stops, inviting celebrities, media and lucky members of the viewing public to dine at a visual feast. On the scene to report for us was Kelly Noble, a first-time contributor for Stitch Kingdom.
A-Listers such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy came out to show their support along with their contemporaries which included comedic actor Jason Segel (who write and starred in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and is currently doing the same for The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever),Twilight star Peter Facinelli, Vanessa Hudgens, the kids from ABC’s Modern Family (along with Rico’s sister, actress Raini Rodriguez), Jamie Lee Curtis, John Stamos, Wayne Brady, Jodi Benson (known for being the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid and Barbie in Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3), Geena Davis and Teri Hatcher, just to name but a few. Even former Bachelor Jake Pavelka walked the blue carpet with Vienna Girardi in tow.
Disney legends and celebrities strolled the great blue way too. On hand to celebrate was prolific composer and Disney legend Richard Sherman, Disney CEO and President Robert Iger and Disney Parks and Resorts President Tom Staggs.
After the jump is our extensive photo gallery of the preparation of the event as well as the blue carpet experience. We do recommend you use the PicLens link to view it as a complete slideshow, but feel free to browse the photos individually

Disney Fine Artist Noah to Present Custom 5 Foot Tall Vinylmation for ‘World of Color’
Yesterday, the official Vinylmation blog offered a tease in the way of a photo of a portion of what is unquestionably a vinylmation figure (left). Also unquestionable is the airbrushed artistic flair of a Disney artist I’ve come to know and love ever since we met at the D23 Expo, Noah.
We reached out to Noah, who is also the resident artist of Disneyland’s D Street, for a comment but he was feeling a bit coy and wouldn’t quite give up the goods. He did, however, eventually tweet out this cryptic message along with a photo (right) which suspiciously looks like the front of a giant painted Mickey Mouse form. In fact, we even spotted what looks like it could very well be Noah’s signature right where Mickey’s nose would be.
As a fan of Noah’s work and having witnessed him put the finishing touches on his 5′ Sorcerer’s Apprentice vinylmation for the D23 Expo, I personally can’t wait to see the final World of Color figure which he’ll be premiering tonight at the World of Color media event.
Noah will also be making a special appearance at Disneyland’s D Street for a Vinylmation signing on August 14 from 2 – 5 pM PT. If you’ll be in the area, I highly encourage you check out the event and meet Noah.
To keep up on Noah’s happenings, you can follow @NoahFineArt on Twitter or visit his website.
